  • We present a microfluidic chip designed for the detection of antibody by using quantum dots fluorescence and a microbead-based assay. A custom designed PDMS microfluidic chip with multi-layer channel is utilized for capturing microbeads; antibody injection into each micro-well; QD injection; and fluorescence detection. The experiment using the fabricated microfluidic chip has been performed on solutions with various concentrations of antibody and has shown correlated fluorescent intensities.

  • Neurons-on-a-Chip technology has been developed to provide diverse in vitro neuro-tools to study neuritogenesis, synaptogensis, axon guidance, and network dynamics. The two core enabling technologies are soft-lithography and microelectrode array technology. Soft lithography technology made it possible to fabricate microstamps and microfluidic channel devices with a simple replica molding method in a biological laboratory and innovatively reduced the turn-around time from assay design to chip fabrication, facilitating various experimental designs. To control nerve cell behaviors at the single cell level via chemical cues, surface biofunctionalization methods and micropatterning techniques were developed. Microelectrode chip technology, which provides a functional readout by measuring the electrophysiological signals from individual neurons, has become a popular platform to investigate neural information processing in networks. Due to these key advances, it is possible to study the relationship between the network structure and functions, and they have opened a new era of neurobiology and will become standard tools in the near future.

  • Inertial microfluidics has attracted significant attention in recent years due to its superior benefits of high throughput, precise control, simplicity, and low cost. Many inertial microfluidic applications have been demonstrated for physiological sample processing, clinical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring and cleanup. In this review, we discuss the fundamental mechanisms and principles of inertial migration and Dean flow, which are the basis of inertial microfluidics, and provide basic scaling laws for designing the inertial microfluidic devices. This will allow end-users with diverse backgrounds to more easily take advantage of the inertial microfluidic technologies in a wide range of applications. A variety of recent applications are also classified according to the structure of the microchannel: straight channels and curved channels. Finally, several future perspectives of employing fluid inertia in microfluidic-based cell sorting are discussed. Inertial microfluidics is still expected to be promising in the near future with more novel designs using various shapes of cross section, sheath flows with different viscosities, or technologies that target micron and submicron bioparticles.

  • When designing image sensors including a CMOS vision chip for edge detection, resolution is a significant factor to evaluate the performance. It is hard to improve the resolution of a bio-inspired CMOS vision using a resistive network because the vision chip contains many circuits such as a resistive network and several signal processing circuits as well as photocircuits of general image sensors such as CMOS image sensor (CIS). Low resolution restricts the use of the application systems. In this paper, we improve the resolution through layout and circuit optimization. Furthermore, we have designed a printed circuit board using FPGA which controls the vision chip. The vision chip for edge detection has been designed and fabricated by using $0.35{\mu}m$ double-poly four-metal CMOS technology, and its output characteristics have been investigated.

  • We propose an optical and an electrical detection methods for detecting various bio-molecules effectively with microcantilevers. The microcantilevers were fabricated employing surface micromachining technique that has attractive advantages in terms of cost efficiency, simplicity and ability of fabricating in array. The fluid cell system for injection of bio-molecular solution is fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a fused silica glass. The microcantilever is deflected with respect to the difference of the surface stress caused by the formation of self-assembled bio-molecules on the gold coated side of the microcantilever. It detected cystamine dihydrochloride and glutaraldehyde molecules and analyzed individual concentrations of the cystamine dihydrochloride solution. We confirm that the deflections of bending-up or bending-down are occurred by the bio-molecule adsorption and microcantilever can be widely used to a ${\mu}-TAS$ and a lab-on-a-chip for a potential detection of various bio-molecules.

  • A manipulator for test-cup attachment modules, which was a part of a robot milking system, was developed to reduce cost and labor for cow milking processing. A Cartesian coordinate manipulator was designed for the milking process, because it was quite flexible and can be constructed more economically than any other configuration. The manipulator was made use of DC motors, screws for power transmission, a RS422 interface system for the transmission of coordinate values and a one-chip microprocessor, 89C52. Performance tests of the manipulator were conducted to measure experimentally the precision of all axes. Some of the results are as follows. 1. The Cartesian coordinate manipulator was designed and built. Dimension of the three perpendicular axes (X, Y, and Z) and one arm’s axis(W) to pick up and transfer the modules were 700㎜$\times$450㎜$\times$550㎜$\times$650㎜. The arm’s axis moved the teat-cup attachment module, which attached four teat-cup to four teats, detached four teat-cup from four teats, was designed and manufactured by using CAD, CAM and CNC. 3. After 10 replications of exercising the manipulator, mean precision values(positioning error) of X, Y, Z axes wee 0.48㎜, 0.20㎜, 0.19㎜, respectively. Therefore, we conclude the axes to have a precision better than 0.5㎜, had no problem to operate correctly the milking manipulator.

  • We present a digital dilution chip comprising a $2{\times}6$ array of wells; the chip can be employed to change the dilution ratio as well as to initiate reactions among diluted samples by using the inter-well valve around the well. In previous dilution devices, streams comprising sample and dilution solutions were merged and separated by a branched microchannel. Therefore, the dilution ratio could not be changed until the structure of the branched microchannel was changed. The present device merges and splits the wells filled with sample or dilution solution by controlling inter-well valves around the wells. Thus, it is possible to change the dilution ratio by changing the sequence in which merging and splitting sequence of each well filled with sample or dilution solution. In experiments, we found that the chip could be used to change linear or exponential dilution ratios within an error of 16.7% and to initiate reactions among the samples within a reaction error of 17.7%.

  • This paper presents a frequency-dependent cell impedance analysis chip for use in cancer and normal cell discrimination. The previous cell impedance analysis chips for flowing cells cannot allow enough time for cell-to-electrode contact to monitor frequency-dependent impedance response. Another type of the previous cell impedance analysis chips for the cells clamped by membranes need complex sample control for making stable cell-to-electrode contact. We present a new impedance analysis chip using the microchamber array, on which a PDMS cover is placed to make stable cell-to-electrode contact for the individual cell trapped in each microchamber; thus achieving frequency-dependent single-cell impedance analysis without complex sample control. Compared to the normal cells, the magnitude of NHBE cells is $60.07{\sim}97.41k{\Omega}$ higher than A549 cells in the frequency range of 95.6 kHz~2MHz and the phase of NHBE is $3.96^{\circ}{\sim}20.8^{\circ}$ higher than A549 cells in the frequency range of 4.37 kHz~2MHz, respectively. It is demonstrated experimentally that the impedance analysis chip performs frequency-dependent cell impedance analysis by making stable cell-to-electrode contact with simple sample control; thereby applicable to the normal cell and cancer cell discrimination.

  • Rubber composites were prepared by precured CIIR pulverized at knead shear force in order to research the effects of the BR/PCP composites. The particle size of domain in BR/CIIR composites was decreased and homogeneously dispersed by the precured CIIR pulverized. However, it was difficult to use the product when the content is 40 phr and precured of 40%. BR/PCP composites have improved mechanical properies as compared that of the addition of simply cut chip composite.
