  • The loss of mandibular continuity due to trauma, neoplasm, or infection results in major esthetic and biologic compromise. The reconstruction of the mandibular bone defect still poses a challenge to oral and maxillofacial surgeons. There have been a number of variety graft materials. Among them, free block bone graft with rigid fixation has been widely used. However, cases using free block bone grafts may lead to a marked invasion of the donor site, mal-union, and absorption of the block bone. In this respect, particulate cortical bone using a titanium mesh tray can be an effective alternative option in order to achieve a proper bone contour and good oral rehabilitation. We have developed an intraoral approach for the mandibular reconstruction method using a titanium mesh tray with autogenous particulate cortical bone graft.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of LED safety block using the government database. To evaluate these effects, the night accident data was obtained from 2007 to 2011 from the database. At the LED-installed area, compared to the uninstalled area, the number of night traffic accidents, injured and mortality had decreased by 26.2%, 21.2% and 38.3%, respectively. The LED-installed intersections are safer than the LED-uninstalled roads from a traffic accidents perspective. In conclusion, a LED safety block is quite effective in decreasing the number of traffic accidents. Although this study was conducted using the data from Changwon city, where LED safety blocks have been installed so far, these results can provide valuable data to other cities considering the implementation of these LED safety blocks.

  • For the purpose of production of oligosaccharides from alginates, a bacterium was isolated from seaweed, and then an enzyme which degraded alginates was obtained from the bacterium. A specific activity of the enzyme was shown in G-rich block and Na-alginate (Wako Co.) as a result of reaction between the enzyme and six types of alginates (G-rich block, M-rich block and 4 commercial Na-alginate). Degradation products were prepared from the Na-alginate (Wako Co.) by the enzyme. The oligosaccharides were fractioned by Sephadex G-25 and Bio-gel P-2 and identified on a thin layer chromatography (TLC). Degree of polymerization (DP) of the oligosaccharides was shown from 2.6 to 7.5.

  • Symbiodinium is a dinoflagellate genus that coexists with coral reefs and is known to provide ultraviolet (UV) protection in nature through the synthesis of mycosporin-like amino acids (MAA). In order to develop a natural and ecofriendly sunblock for use in summer resorts, the possibility of using a Symbiodinium microbiome extract or an MAA was investigated. Two sunblocks, one containing 7% Symbiodinium extract and the other containing MAA were prepared to be tested on hairless mice and human skin. In this clinical study, the sun protection factor (SPF) and Protection factor of UV A (PFA) values of the sunblock containing either Symbiodinium extract or MAA were determined. The SPF values of the sunblock containing Symbiodinium extract and MAA were 10.43 and 10.83, respectively, and the PFA values were 3.42 and 3.39, respectively. Based on their PFA values of ≥2, the UV A protection can be graded as PA+ (low) for both the sunblocks. In addition, the UV-blocking extract of Symbiodinium has a low phototoxicity and cytotoxicity, reducing the possibility of a heavy feeling to the skin or a foreign-body sensation caused by residue build-up. The low toxicity feature of the major sunblock component will also prevent side effects, such as allergic reactions. Although Symbiodinium extract or MAA alone do not provide effectiveprotection against UV irradiation, their protection capacity can be complemented by the addition of inorganic UV-protecting compounds.

  • In order to protect coastal facilities mainly from wave and current actions, the self-locking bio blocks constituting component elements of protecting structures against scouring were designed. These blocks are adapted to the sloping bottom, coastal dunes, and submerged coastal base counteracting the destructive and erosive impulse action. A series of laboratory experiments is necessary to investigate the reflection of water waves over and against a train of protruded or submerged shore structures and compare the reflecting capabilities of incident waves including wave forces. In this study the hydraulic model experiment was conducted to identify the performance of newly designed water affinity bio blocks to keep the coast slope and bottom mound from scouring by reduction of the reflection coefficient and to convince stability of the placements. Revised design of each element of blocks were also tested for field conditions. From the result of experiment, the field applicability of the developed blocks and placement is to be discussed afterward.

  • Microbial fuel cells (MFC) stacked with bipolar plates have been constructed and their performance was tested. In this design, single fuel cell unit was connected in series by bipolar plates where an anode and a cathode were made in one graphite block. Two types of bipolar plate stacked MFCs were constructed. Both utilized the same glucose oxidation reaction catalyzed by Gram negative bacteria, Proteus vulgaris as a biocatalyst in an anodic compartment, but two different cathodic reactions were employed: One with ferricyanide reduction and the other with oxygen reduction reactions. In both cases, the total voltage was the mathematical sum of individual fuel cells and no degradation in performance was found. Electricity from these MFCs was stored in a supercapacitor to drive external loads such as a motor and electric bulb.

  • In order to increase the permeabilities of $N_2$, $O_2$, $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $SO_2$, Poly (ether block amides) (PEBAX) 3533 and its blended membranes with Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) of molecular weight 400 were prepared. The contents of PEG400 were 20%, 40%, and 50% and this membranes were characterized in terms of permeability for $N_2$, $O_2$, $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $SO_2$ gases and also diffusivity and solubility as well by using the time-lag gas separation apparatus. As expected, the permeabilities incerased as the contents of PEG400 increased. For the ideal selectivity, there is no big difference in values of between PEBAX 3533 and PEBAX/PEG400 membranes. The increase of permeabilities is due to the increases of solubilities of gases in question and this will be explained in more detail.

  • The effect of biofertilizer in enhancing nutrient quality and antioxidant property of rice grain was investigated. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications and 7 treatments namely : RF = $N-P_2O_5-K_2O(11-5.5-4.8kg\;10a^{-1});$ half of the recommended fertilizer rate, $HRF=N-P_2O_5-K_2O(5.5-2.75-2.4kg\;10a^{-1}):$ HRF+Bio 250=HRF combined with 250 kg Biofertilizer 10 $a^{-1}$; HRF+Bio 500=HRF combined with 500 kg Biofertilizer 10 $a^{-1};$ Bio 250=250 kg Biofertilizer 10 $a^{-1};$ Bio 500=500 kg Biofertilizer 10 $a^{-1};$ and NF=No Fertilizer. Results showed that HRF+Bio 500 obtained a significantly higher protein content but a significantly lower amylose content compared with RF and NF treatments. Highest phytic acid content was recorded in NF treatment while the lowest was observed in HRF+500 treatment. The highest values in both electron donating ability and reducing power were obtained in HRF+Bio 500 treatment. All treatments obtained higher reducing power than that of the RF treatment and that NF treatment showed comparable values in both electron donating ability and reducing power with those of the treated plots. Highest antimutagenicity property was also observed in HRF+Bio 500 treatment followed by Bio 500 treatment. This study showed the possibility of using biofertilizer to enhance nutritional quality and antioxidant property of rice.
