Recently, as the policy of state that it is the low carbon green growth is promoted, the effort for reducing the CO2 gas generation ejected from the construction industry in the cement production is continued. That is, the method using the mineral admixtures including the silica fume and red mud, silica fume and etc. it is the industrial byproduct with the method solving the exhaustion problem of the environmental contamination settlement and natural resources, the great quantity as the cement substitute material is examined. Accordingly, in this research, the strength characteristic of the curing body differentiating the curing method of the ternary system inorganic binder using the blast furnace slag and red mud, silica fume and etc. as the cement substitute material tried to be examined.
This paper presents the fundamental study on rational manufacture of Ultra High Strength(VHS) concrete using industrial by-products as like silica fume, slag and fly ash. In this study, we had tested various mixing cases to manufacture the UHS concrete(target compressive strength : over $1,000kgf/cm^2$) which is easily workable (target slump flow : $60{\pm}10cm$). The main variables are studied: 1) to find the optimum replacement ratio of mineral admixture. 2) to find a rational water-binder ratio and a proper binder content. 3) to find the method for reduction of slump loss. From the test results, it is concluded that the rational mix design can be made by using 40% slag, 10% silica fume. We found that compressive strength of UHS concrete increases according to decreasing W/B ratio but in W/B ratio 18~20%, the difference is vague and the compressive strength does not necessarily increase according to increasing binder content over 700kg.
Metakaolin is a cementitious material for producing high-strength concrete. This material is now used as substitute for silica-fume. In this paper, we tested the compressive strength of concrete according to the substitute ratio of metakaolin, silica-fume. And we did the durability test such as chloride ion diffusion and chemical attack. In the compressive strength test, the result shows that $10\%$ substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder is optimum. In the chloride ion diffusion test, according to the increase of substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder, the diffusion coefficient is more reduced. And in the chemical attack test, according to the increase of substitute, the resistance is more excellent. In the durability test, we recognized that metakaolin is able to used as a substitute for silica-fume.
Recently, meteorological disasters have been increasing by climate change, excessive rainfall, and landslide. The purpose is to develop new fabric concrete that can prevent and recover from damages because some of areas are vulnerable to meteorological disaster. Specifically, this technology can minimize time and space constraint when repairing the concrete structure and installing a formwork. The structure of fabric concrete is a mixture of fabric concrete and a high-speed hardened cement, Silica sand, wollastonite mineral fiber, fabric material and waterproof PVC fabric. In this study, the ratio of mechanical properties and durability of the fabric concrete mixture was evaluated by deriving the binder: silica sand mix ratio of the fabric concrete mixture and substituting part of the cement amount with wollastonite mineral fiber. Best binder in performance evaluation: Silica sand mix ratio is 6: 4 and the target mechanical performance and durability are the best when over 15% wollastonite binder is replaced by silicate mineral fiber.
This study focused on the influences regarding the use of polyepoxide-based polymer and silica fume (SF) on the fresh and hardened state properties of self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLC) along with their impacts on electrical resistance and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). To do so, two series of compositions each of which consists of twelve mixes, with water to binder (W/B) ratios of 0.35 and 0.4 were cast. Three different silica fume/binder ratios of 0, 5%, and 10% were considered along with four different polymer/binder ratios of 0, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Afterwards, the rupture modulus, tensile strength, 14-day, 28-day, and 90-day compressive strength, the UPV and the electrical resistance of the mixes were tested. The results indicated that although the use of polymer could enhance the passing and filling abilities, it could lead to a decrease of segregation resistance. In addition, the interaction of the SF and the polymeric contents enhanced the workability. However, the impacts regarding the use of polymeric contents on fresh state properties of SCLC were more prevalent than those regarding the use of SF. Besides the fresh state properties, the durability and mechanical properties of the mixes were affected due to the use of polymeric and SF contents. In other words, the use of the SF and the polymer enhanced the durability and mechanical properties of SCLC specimens.
For the preparation of hardened films which can be applied as a binder for flame-resistant materials such as silica, linseed oil was subjected to a low temperature plasma treatment with argon, or oxygen gas. The film was produced much faster than so-called drying of oil in air. The SEM analysis for silica particles embedded in the hardened film after plasma treatment showed that the silica particles were immobilized on substrate and were evenly dispersed. The FT-IR spectral analysis for the plasma-treated linseed oil films demonstrated that the radicals which were formed during the plasma treatments caused the linseed oil to be cross-linked, and the plasmas attacked carbon chains of the oil randomly without focusing on specific vulnerable bonds such carbon double and carbonyl bonds intensively unless exposure times of the plasmas were prolonged too much, while the cross-linking of the air-dried film was considered to occur at the well-known typical sites, i.e., carbon-carbon double bond and ${\alpha}$-methylene carbon. Burning times, as a measure of flame/fire resistance, of silica-filled cellulose substrates, increased with increasing contents of silica.
Fly ash and silica fume belong to industry by-products that can be used to produce concrete. This study shows the model of a neural network to evaluate the strength development of blended concrete containing fly ash and silica fume. The neural network model has four input parameters, such as fly ash replacement content, silica fume replacement content, water/binder ratio, and ages. Strength is the output variable of neural network. Based on the backpropagation algorithm, the values of elements in the hidden layer of neural network are determined. The number of neurons in the hidden layer is confirmed based on trial calculations. We find (1) neural network can give a reasonable evaluation of the strength development of composite concrete. Neural network can reflect the improvement of strength due to silica fume additions and can consider the reductions of strength as water/binder increases. (2) When the number of neurons in the hidden layer is five, the prediction results show more accuracy than four neurons in the hidden layer. Moreover, five neurons in the hidden layer can reproduce the strength crossover between fly ash concrete and plain concrete. Summarily, the neural network-based model is valuable for design sustainable composite concrete containing silica fume and fly ash.
Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) consists of cement, silica fume (SF), sand, fibers, water and superplasticizer. Typical water/binder-ratios are 0.15-0.20 with 20-30% of silica fume. The development off properties of hardening UHPC relates with both hydration of cement and pozzolanic reaction of silicafume. In this paper, by considering the production of calcium hydroxide in cement hydration and its consumption in the pozzolanic reaction, a numerical model is proposed to simulate the hydration of UHPC. The degree of hydration of cement and degree of reaction of silica fume are obtained as accompanied results from the proposed hydration model. The properties of hardening UHPC, such as degree of hydration of cement, calcium hydroxide contents, and compressive strength, are predicted from the contribution of cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction. The proposed model is verified through experimental data on concrete with different water-to-binder ratios and silica fume substitution ratios.
High-strength concrete were produced with super-plasticizer, silica fume, fly ash and blast furnace slag powder. Topics investigated inclued mix proportion, and effects of unit weight of binder, W/C ratio, additive type on the physical properties of high-strength concrete. As the result, at 20% of silica fume, unit weight of binder 700kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ and W/C=0.24, 28days compressive strength of concrete was over 1,000kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. And in cases of blending with silica fume 10% and fly ash or slag 10%, it was able to produce economical high-strength concrete with 28 days strength similar to silica fume 20% only, and higher strength after 90days.
Experimental work was carried out in order to produce a novel grade of ink-jet paper that has both high print-out quality and price competitiveness. Usually, silica and PVOH has been used for ink-jet paper to design the coating layer that has a hydrophilic and micro-porous structure. However, poor rheological characteristics and low productivity of the silica-PVOH system make the price of the ink-jet paper high. The main focus of this study was replacing the conventional silica (coating pigment) PVOH (binder) coating system with the new PCC (coating pigment) cationic starch (binder) coating system, and optimizing thecoating technology associated with PPC-cationic starch system. In this study, ink-jet print quality of PCC-coated papers was compared with that of silica-coated paper. Two types of PCC were used: conventional type and colloid type. It turned out that PCC C, a conventional coating pigment, has not given a desirable result: it showed high dot reproduction, but it gave low optical density. In spite of low dot reproduction, the qualities of PCC A were comparable or superior to those of silica in optical density, color reproduction, and the uniformity of printing surface. It was also shown that the problems that are happened when the dosage level of cationic starch was too low were varied with ink-type used in each printer. However, in the case of low binder level, the produced image was widely spread resulting fromtoo low optical density of images, or from the lack of bonding ability to set ink into coating surface.
