  • In this study, pervaporation performances of water/methanol and water/butanol mixture were evaluated using zeolite 4A membranes manufacutred by FINETECH by experimental works and numerical modeling. Permeation and separation characteristics, such as flux and separation factor, were analyzed by gas chromatography (TCD) and liquid nitrogen traps. Experiments have shown that water is selectively separated from a mixture of water and methanol (separation factor up to approximately 250) and water and butanol (separation factor up to approximately 1,500). Generalized Maxwell Stefan (GMS) theory was implemented to predict pervaporation behaviors of water/alcohol mixtures and diffusional coefficients of zeolite layer were obtained through parameter estimation using $MATLAB^{(R)}$ optimization toolbox. Since the pore size of zeolite 4A are much larger than kinetic diameter of water molecules and smaller than those of methanol and butanol, zeolite 4A membranes can be applied to in situ water removal process such as membrane reactors or hybrid reaction-dehydration process.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the competitive ability and the interaction of each species in ten mono-and binary-associations of four forage species; orchardgrass, tall fescus, ladino clover, and alfalfa. Each species was grown in intra- and interspecific stands in large pots for one year. And samplings of shoot and root were taken in Spring, Summer, and fall clipping stages. Intra- and interspecific competition was compared and evaluated by expected yield, aggressivity, relative yield total(RYT), compensation index(CI), general combining ability(GCA), and specific combining ability (SCA) with shoot and root dry matter production of each species in monoculture and binary mixture. The forage yield was high in two grass species and the mixture of them, but low in two legume species and the mixture of them. The mixture of tall fescue-ladino clover was evaluated as a productive association with a high PYT(1.05) and a high SCA(0.79), and tall fescue was a more aggressive species in it. Each of grass-grass and legume-legume mixture was less aggressive between two species and lower SCAs than grass-legume mixtures. Especially, orchardgrass was the most agressive species and alfalfa was the least, but tall fescue had the highest GCA and ladino clover had the lowest in shoot competition. Also in root, tall fescue- ladino clover mixture was a good match with a high RYT(l.12) and a high SCA (0.60), and orchardgrass was highest in aggressivity. However, orchardgrass had the highest GCA in root while tall fescue had the highest in shoot.

  • The rate constants for solvated electrons with benzene in the binary mixture (tetrahydrofuran-water) were measured at a various temperatures$(-18{\circ}C{\sim}+51{\circ}C)$ by photolysis. From Arrhenius plots of rate constants it was observed that the activation energies were decreased with increasing tetrahydrofuran(THF) content. Decreasing the viscosity of solvent mixtures by adding water, the rate constants were also decreased. It indicates that the reaction of solvated electrons are not controlled by diffusion. The change of activation enthalpy in kcal $M^{-1}$ and the rate constants in$ M^{-1}sec^{-1}$ were 4.90 and $8.80{\times}10^8$ for 30M% of THF, 2.80 and $5.14{\times}10^8$ for 49M% of THF, and -0.30 and %1.43{\times}10^8$ for 75M% of THF, respectively. The slope of the linear plot of activation enthalpies against activation entropies was $244{\circ}K$, which supports the reaction parameter is the change of activation entropy in the range of the experimental temperature. From the solvent effect on the activation energy, it was found that the step of the reaction, ${e_s}^-+B{\rightleftharpoons}B^-$ shifted to the exothermic reaction with increasing THF content.

  • Sorption properties of corn starch(CS) and Soy protein isolates(SPI) in plastic films packaging were investigates for binary system. The mixture were sealed in plastic films of low density polyethylene(LDPE), oriented polypropylene(OPP) and LDPE/OPP coated film and packaging effect on the changes of moisture sorption during storage at $40^{\circ}C$ were studied. The following results were obtained. The water vapor permeability of material films was $32.6g/m^2/24hrs(below\;g)$ for 0.02mm LDPE film, 14.01g for 0.04mm LDPE film, 7.30g for 0.02mm OPP film, 3.37g for 0.04mm OPP film and 4.869 for 0.02mm LDPE/0.02 mm OPP confine film at $40^{\cire}C$ 90%RH, therefore the OPP film was more effective than LDPE film on the resistance of relative humidity. And the OPP film packaging sealed mixture of food samples was also more elective then LDPE film, having same thickness for increase of water vapor permeability during storage at $40^{\cire}C$. A general increase in sorption rate was found more in SPI than CS in the packaged mixtures.

  • KR-31378 is a new drug candidate intended for the use in the prevention of ischemia-reperfusion damage. The objective of this preformulation study was to determine the physicochemical properties of KR-31378. The n-octanol to water partition coefficients of KR-31378 were 0.0504 at pH 3 and 0.8874 at pH 10. Accelerated stability of KR-31378 in solution and solid state was studied at 5, 40, $60^{\circ}C$. The stability testing indicated that the t90 for the drug in solid was estimated to be 2 years and 128.6 days at $25^{\circ}C$, while the that in aquesou solution was 68.6 days at $25^{\circ}C$. The KR-31378 was also found to be unstable under the relative humidity of 76%, probably because of the hygroscopic nature of the drug. In order to study compatibility of KR-31378 with typical excipients, potential change in differential scanning calorimetry spectrum was studied in 1:1 binary mixtures of KR-31378 and Aerosil, Avicel, Eudragit, lactose, PEG, talc, CMC, PVP, starch. As a result, CMC, PVP, and starch were found to be incompatible with KR-31378, indicating the addition of these excipients may complicate the manufacturing of the formulation for the drug. Particle size distribution of KR-31378 powder was in the size range of 9-93 $\mu$ m with the mean particle size of 37.9 $\mu$ m. The flowability of KR-31378 was apparently inadequate, indicating the granulation may be necessary for the processing of the drug to solid dosage forms. Crystallization of the drug with a number of organic solvents did not lead a crystalline polymorphism. In addition, dissolution of the drug from the powder was adequately rapid at $37^{\circ}C$ in water.

  • Solvolytic rate constants at 25℃ are reported for solvolyses of cinnamyl bromide (1) in binary mixtures of water with acetone, ethanol, methanol, methanol-d, and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. Product selectivities are reported for solvolyses of 1 in aqueous ethanol and methanol. Rate ratios in solvents of the same $Y_{Br}$ value and different nucleophilicity provide measures of the minimum extent of nucleophilic solvent assistance (e.g. $[k_{40EW}/k_{97TFE}]$Y = 2.88, EW = ethanol-water). With use of the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, the l and m values are similar to the values of 0.43 and 0.88 obtained for the solvolyses of 1 using the equation (see below) which includes a parameter (I) for solvation of aromatic rings. The magnitude of l and m values associated with a change of solvent composition predicts the $S_{N1}$ reaction mechanism rather than an $S_{N2}$ channel. Product selectivities (S), defined by S = [ether product]/[alcohol product]×[water]/[alcohol solvent] are related to four rate constants for reactions involving one molecule of solvent as nucleophile and another molecule of solvent as general base catalyst. A linear relationship between 1/S and molar ratio of solvent is derived theoretically and validated experimentally for solvolyses of the above substrates from water up 75% 1/S = $(k_{wa}/k_{aw})$([alcohol solvent]/[water]) + $k_{ww}/k_{aw}$ alcohol-water. The results are best explained by product formation from a “free” carbocation intermediate rather than from a solvent-separated ion pair.

  • Hydrogen bonding interaction between alcohols and water molecules is an important characteristic in the aqueous solutions of alcohols. In this paper, a series of molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate the aqueous solutions of low molecular weight alcohols (methanol, ethylene glycol and glycerol) at the concentrations covering a broad range from 1 to 90 mol %. The work focuses on studying the effect of the alcohols molecules on the hydrogen bonding of water molecules in binary mixtures. By analyzing the hydrogen bonding ability of the hydroxyl (-OH) groups for the three alcohols, it is found that the hydroxyl group of methanol prefers to form more hydrogen bonds than that of ethylene glycol and glycerol due to the intra-and intermolecular effects. It is also shown that concentration has significant effect on the ability of alcohol molecule to hydrogen bond water molecules. Understanding the hydrogen bonding characteristics of the aqueous solutions is helpful to reveal the cryoprotective mechanisms of methanol, ethylene glycol and glycerol in aqueous solutions.

  • The kinetics of the solvolysis of 2-furoyl chloride and 2-thenoyl chloride in $MeOH-H_2O,\;EtOH-H_2O,\;(Me)_2CO-H_2O,\;MeCN-H_2O$ and MeCN-MeOH has been investigated. The rates were faster in protic solvents than in aprotic solvents. This was caused by the bond breaking of leaving group through hydrogen-bonding solvation of protic solvents. In MeCN-M$\'{e}$OH the rate in MeOH rich solvents was faster than in MeCN rich solvents by the specific solvation of alcoholic hydrogen and there was a maximum rate of reaction at MeOH mole fraction of 0.8. The reaction rates of solvolysis were considerably slower than those of benzoyl chloride owing to the electron withdrawing effect of thienyl and furyl groups. It was concluded that solvolytic reaction proceeds via a dissociative $S_N2$ mechanism in which bond-breaking precedes bond-formation at the transition state.

  • Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles were prepared by the modified spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. Polymer solution was prepared by two water-soluble organic solvents, such as ethanol and acetone. Because of its biocompatible nature, PEG-PPG diblock copolymer was used as surfactant and stabilizer. The influence of several preparative variables on the nanoparticle formation, such as type and concentration of stabilizing agent, stirring methods, water/oil phase ratio and polymer concentration were investigated in order to control and optimize the process. After preparation of nanoparticles, particle size and distribution were evaluated by the light scattering particle analyzer. As results, the particle size was 50-200 nm and dispersibility was monodisperse. It was found that the appropriate selections of binary solvent mixtures and polymeric concentrations in both organic and aqueous phases could provide a good yield and favorable physical properties of PLGA nanoparticles.

  • Solubility data of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in the imidazolium-based ionic liquids with methylsulfate anion are presented at pressures up to about 45 MPa and at temperatures between 303.15 K and 343.15 K. The ionic liquids studied in this work were 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([emim][$mSO_4$]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([bmim][$mSO_4$]). The solubilities of $CO_2$ were determined by measuring the bubble point or cloud point pressures of the binary mixtures using a high-pressure equilibrium apparatus equipped with a variable-volume view cell. The equilibrium pressure increased very steeply at high $CO_2$ compositions. The $CO_2$ solubility in ionic liquids increased with increase of the total length of alkyl chains attached to the imidazolium cation of the ionic liquids. The phase equilibrium data for the $CO_2$ + ionic liquid systems have been correlated using the Peng-Robinson equation of state.
