  • This paper describes the design and evaluation of new type piezoelectric bimorph actuator that shows much large mechanical response than those conventional types. The bimorph actuator has modified structure combined with the multilayer actuator(MLA) and the composite multilayer actuator called "Moonie". The design and performancean alysis of bimorph actuator are carried out with Finite Element Method (FEM). Theoretical calculation results show that the generating force and displacement of Moonie-modified bimorph actuator can be improved by about 130% and 150%, respectively. The overshooting and ringing phenomena of the bimorph can be effectively restrained by the pseudo step electric field having a rising time coincied with a period of the fundamental vibration mode of the bimorph.e bimorph.

  • This paper presents the self power generation from vibration using the piezoelectric bimorph actuator. The piezoelectric bimorph actuator was well developed with PZT-PNN-Fe piezoelectric ceramics. As the applied voltage was increased, a linear change of displacement was obtained with a relatively high ratio of 12.53 um/V for the bimorph actuator. Moreover, when the motor's rotational speed was 2000 rpm, the bimorph actuator, which has a resonance frequency of 68 Hz, exhibited the most efficient generation voltage of 10.4 V. This bimorph actuator could make the LED, emitting 60 mW, working successfully. Therefore, it is anticipated that the bimorph actuator will be useful as a power source for the next-generation electronic devices.

  • This paper proposed a dual actuator using bimorph PZT for information storage device based on prove array NSOM(Near-field Scanning Optical Microscopy). The gap between the media and the optical head should be maintained within the optical tolerance. Therefore, a new actuator having high sensitivity is required. Bimorph PZT, which has fast access time and high sensitivity characteristic, is suitable for this precise actuating system. This paper is focused on derivation of mathematical model of dual bimorph PZT actuator and control algorithm. Hamilton's principle was used for mathematical model. The model is verified by FEA(Finite Element Analysis), and compared with experimental results. Different control algorithms were used f3r two bimorph PZT actuating same direction and opposite direction. The gap between recording media and optical head was controlled within 20nm in experiment.

  • The beam rotating actuator, which can be utilized to improve the data transfer rate for the optical disk systems, has been developed. It can employ a newly developed laser beam rotating actuator for putting multi-beam spots on more than one track on the optical disk simultaneously. Therefore, It has to maintain up to .+-.0.01 .deg. resolution and high bandwidth performance. In this these, the Dove prism is used for the beam rotating actuator based on bimorph piezo material. The performance of the beam rotating actuator is verified since the dynamics ferquency performance is measured using the dynamic analyzer and the attached stain gage sensor. the beam rotating angle performance is also examined since the long range beam reflection character is utilized.

  • A new type of precision actuator is developed using piezoelectric bimorphs. This type of actuator is applicable for the flat surface or in-pipe system and can make forward and backward motion. Two bimorphs are linked serially and two different phased voltages are applied to each bimorph. Therefore, The end of the bimorph makes ellipsoidal motion. The device moves by the friction force between the rubber attached at the bimorph end and the inner surface of the pipe. As the results, the driving range of the device is about 0~18Hz and the device guarantees very high linearity at low frequency, 0~1 Hz. The maximum velocity of the device is about 6mm/s at 10Hz. The developed mechanism is very simple and use piezoelectric bimorph. So, it is possible to miniaturize and educe the power consumption.

  • In this paper, a slim type actuator is proposed rising a bimorph PZT and a circular rotor link. The bimorph contacts the circular rotor, and its displacement generates the rotational motion of the rotor. The rotor causes the linear motion of AF and zoom lens through gear and a motion guide. The proposed model enables the actuations of many lens groups for zoom module by extending the single lens model. The important design parameter is the contact force determined by the frictional coefficient and preload between the rotor and PZT bimorph. A prototype of the single actuator model is manufactured and experiments results using LDV and tachometer are compared to the theoretical and numerical predictions. Experiments show the linear bimorph actuator model meets the performance criteria of the lens actuation, and it can be applicable to various slim type actuators for AF and zoom motions in mobile cameras.

  • A new thermal bimorph actuator for large out-of-plane displacement is designed, fabricated and tested. The deflecting beam is composed of polyimide, heater, and polyvinyl difluorides with tetrafluoroethylene(PVDF-TrFE). The large difference of coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of two polymer layers (polyimide and PVDF-TrFE) can generate a large deflection with relatively small temperature rising. Compared to the most conventional micro actuators based on MEMS(micro-electro mechanical system) technology, a large displacement, over 1 mm at 20 mW, could be achieved. The proposed actuator can find applications where a large vertical displacement is needed while keeping compact overall device size, such as a micro zooming lens.

  • In the present paper, equivalent beam and equivalent bimorph beam models for IPMC(ionic Polymer-Metal Composite) actuators are described. Physical properties of an IPMC, such as Young's modulus and electro-mechanical coupling coefficient. are determined from the rule of mixture, bimorph beam equations, and measured force-displacement data of a cantilevered IPMC actuator. By using a beam equation with estimated physical properties, actuation displacements of a cantilevered IPMC actuator was calculated and a good agreement between the computed tip displacements and the measured data was observed. Finite element analysis(FEA) combined with the estimated physical properties was used to reproduce the force-displacement relationship of an IPMC actuator. Results from the FEA agreed well with the measure data. The proposed models might be used for modeling of IPMC actuators with complicated shapes and boundary conditions.

  • A new thermal bimorph actuator for large out-of-plane displacement is designed, fabricated and tested. The deflecting beam is composed of polyimide, heater, and polyvinyl difluorides with tetrafluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE). The large difference of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of two polymer layers (polyimide and PVDF-TrFE) can generate a significant deflection with relatively small temperature rise. Compared to the most conventional micro actuators based on MEMS (micro-electro mechanical system) technology, a large displacement, over 1 mm at 20 mW, could be achieved. Additionally, we can achieve response time of 14.6 ms, resonance frequency of 12 Hz, and reliability ability of $10^5$ cycles. The proposed actuator can find applications where a large vertical displacement is needed while maintaining compact overall device size, such as a micro zooming lens, micro mirror, micro valve and optical application.
