  • This paper describes the collapse characteristics of the rectangular tube under eccentric compressive load. Overall buckling stress and bifurcation criterion (slenderness ration)are investigated. modified secant formula(MSF) is proposed to decide overall buckling stress. The bifurcation criterion which can distinguish between the local and overall buckling mode shapes is suggest by equating the local and overall buckling stresses. Additionally the effect of initial imperfection on bifurcation criterion is investigated.

  • Bifurcation of unstable symmetric flow patterns to stable asymmetric ones in laminar sudden-expansion flow has been numerically investigated. Computations were carried out for an expansion ratio of 3 and over a range of the flow Reynolds numbers by using numerical methods of second-order time accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees divergence-free flowfields at all times. The critical Reynolds number above which bifurcation of pitchfork type to asymmetric flow pattern takes place is lower in a flow with a higher expansion ratio, in agreement with the previously reported results. The bifurcation diagrams show that the bifurcation takes place at a Reynolds number, $Re_c = 86.3$, higher than the value that has been reported. The lower critical Reynolds number may be due to deficiencies in their computations which employed SIMPLE-type relaxation methods rather than the initial-value approach of the present study. Characteristics of the flow development during the transition to asymmetric stable flow have been investigated by using spectral analysis of the velocity signals obtained by the simulations.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental investigation of the buckling behavior of thin-walled box-section column. The experiments for finding the buckling stress and bifurcation slenderness ratio are performed by the method from AISC. The sets of boundary conditions are both end simply supported, one end simply supported and the other end clamped, and both ends clamped. The types of specimens are clssified by thickness to width ratio. The experiments for the thin-walled rectangular tubes are closely concurrent with the theoretical values of overall buckling load and bifurcation slenderness ratio that are suggested by the part (I) of this paper.

  • In this paper, we study the influence of infection ratio on gradual reduction of drug dose for the five state HIV infection model that explicitly includes the population of the virus. We first compute all equilibrium points of the model and investigate the stabilities of them. As a result, a bifurcation diagram is obtained which shows a change in the equilibrium points, or in their stability properties, as the drug effect $\eta$ is varied from 0 to 1(alternatively, drug dose is changed from 1 to 0). Based on the bifurcation diagram, we show that the gradual reduction of drug dose can be applied for the treatment of AIDS patients. Moreover, we analyze the influence of the variation of infection ratio on the gradual reduction treatment. Computer simulation results are also presented to validate the proposed results.

  • Cerebral aneurysm mostly occurs at a bifurcation of the circle of Willis. When the cerebral aneurysm is ruptured, a disease like subarachnoid hemorrhage and stroke is caused and this can be even deadly for patients. Generally it is known that causes of the intracranial aneurysm are a congenital deformity of the artery and pressure or shear stress from the blood flow. A blood flow pattern and the geometry of the blood vessel are important factors for the aneurysm formation. Research for several hemodynamic indices has been performed and these indices can be used for the prediction of aneurysm initiation and rupture. Therefore, the numerical analysis was performed for hemodynamic characteristics of the blood flow through the cerebral artery applying the various bifurcation angle and flow rate ratio. We analyze the flow characteristics using indices from the results of the numerical simulation. In addition, to investigate the flow pattern in the aneurysm according to the bifurcation angle and the flow rate ratio, we performed the numerical simulation on the supposition that the aneurysm occurs.

  • In this paper, we consider a discrete ratio-dependent predator-prey system with harvesting effect. In order to investigate dynamical behaviors of this system, first we find out all fixed points of the system and then classify their stabilities by using their Jacobian matrices and local stability method. Next, we display some numerical examples to substantiate theoretical results and finally, we show numerically, by means of a bifurcation diagram, that various dynamical behaviors including cycles, periodic doubling bifurcation and chaotic bands can be existed.

  • The main objective of present study is to obtain information for flow characteristics, such as velocity and wall shear stress, of bifurcation in blood vessel. Branch flows for Newtonian fluids are simulated by using Fluent V.6.0. The numerical simulations are carried out for five cases divided by different values of bifurcation angle and area ratio. As a result of simulation, high wall shear stress is appeared at the bifurcated region. As increasing bifurcation angle, pressure drop is increasing. In addition, as the area is decreasing, pressure drop and wall shear stress is increasing.
