Methodology for Evaluating Cycling Environment using GPS-based Probe Bicycle Speed Data (GPS프로브 자전거 주행속도를 이용한 자전거 주행환경 평가방법론)

  • The bicycle is an environment-friendly transport mode leading to a more sustainable transportation system. To innovatively increase the use of bicycle as a significant transport mode, bicycling-friendly roadway environment should be provided. From this perspective, the scientific and effective assessment of roadway environment in term of the bicyclist perception for safety and comfortability is of keen interest. This study develops a methodology for evaluation cycling environment using probe bicycles. A global positioning system(GPS) based speedometer was used to collect bicycle speed data. Cycling comfortability index(CCI) was derived for the purpose of evaluating cycling environment. The proposed CCI can be effectively used as an assessment tool in the field of bicycle transportation.

Analysis of Bicycle Accidents in Korea Based on Regional Characteristics (지역 특성을 고려한 국내 자전거 사고 분석)

  • This study aims to analyze the accidents of green mode bicycle. In pursuing the above, this study gave special emphasis on modeling the bicycle accidents reflecting the regional characteristics. The main results are as follows. First, the null hypotheses that the number of accident and ratio of serious injury and fatality (FSI) were the same over regions were rejected. Second, as the common variables, the number of bicycle was judged to have positive (+) impact to the accidents and the bicycle using ratio was inferred to increase the ratio of FSI. Third, the elderly population ratio among 3 factors which gave impact to the accidents of Si_A (city-county consolidation) was concluded to have the greatest elasticity. The developed area ratio between 2 factors in Si_B (city which is not consolidated) was, however, estimated to have the higher elasticity. Fourth, the number of car registration among 5 accident factors of Gun (county) was analyzed to have the greatest elasticity. Finally, the commuting trip ratio among 7 accident factors of Gu (district) was judged to have the greatest elasticity. This study can be expected to give some implications to regional policy-making related to bicycle.

Bicyclists' Behavioral Characteristics and Impacts on Route Choice Using Stated Preference Survey in Commuting Time (통근시간대 자전거이용자의 이용행태특성 및 경로선택 영향요인 분석)

  • In the last five years, Korea has supplied many more bicycle facilities than in the last several decades combined. However, have bicyclists increased in proportion to investment? If bicyclists are avoiding existing bicycle related facilities, including off-road bicycle facilities, it could be because suppliers did not consider bicyclists' preferences in their planning process. In this paper, the authors tried to understand the bicyclists' behavioral and route choice characteristics using stated preference surveys and a logit model, using commuting time in Daejeon Metropolitan City, Korea. The results show that nine factors affect the route choice behavior of bicyclists. In particular, bicyclists preferred sub-arterial roads to off-road, dedicated bicycle facilities in residential area. It means that bicyclists like a seamless bicycle route and that a buffer zone between car lanes and bicycle lanes or 50 km/h speed limits for cars are necessary for bicycle lanes that are not physical separated.
