Validation of Sea Surface Wind Speeds from Satellite Altimeters and Relation to Sea State Bias - Focus on Wind Measurements at Ieodo, Marado, Oeyeondo Stations (인공위성 고도계 해상풍 검증과 해상상태편차와의 관련성 - 이어도, 마라도, 외연도 해상풍 관측치를 중심으로 -)

  • The sea surface wind field has long been obtained from satellite scatterometers or passive microwave radiometers. However, the importance of satellite altimeter-derived wind speed has seldom been addressed because of the outstanding capability of the scatterometers. Satellite altimeter requires the accurate wind speed data, measured simultaneously with sea surface height observations, to enhance the accuracy of sea surface height through the correction of sea state bias. This study validates the wind speeds from the satellite altimeters (GFO, Jason-1, Envisat, Jason-2, Cryosat-2, SARAL) and analyzes characteristics of errors. In total, 1504 matchup points were produced using the wind speed data of Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) and of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) buoys at Marado and Oeyeondo stations for 10 years from December 2007 to May 2016. The altimeter wind speed showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of about $1.59m\;s^{-1}$ and a negative bias of $-0.35m\;s^{-1}$ with respect to the in-situ wind speed. Altimeter wind speeds showed characteristic biases that they were higher (lower) than in-situ wind speeds at low (high) wind speed ranges. Some tendency was found that the difference between the maximum and minimum value gradually increased with distance from the buoy stations. For the improvement of the accuracy of altimeter wind speed, an equation for correction was derived based on the characteristics of errors. In addition, the significance of altimeter wind speed on the estimation of sea surface height was addressed by presenting the effect of the corrected wind speeds on the sea state bias values of Jason-1.

Differences in attributional bias and irrational gambling beliefs between gamblers and non-gamblers (귀인양식과 귀인편향, 비합리적 도박신념에서의 차이: 도박자와 비도박자의 비교)

  • The aims of this study were 1) to compare irrational gambling beliefs of gamblers and non-gamblers, 2) to investigate the role of cognitive error on winning probability thinking error, and 3) to examine the relationship between attributional bias and gambling behavior. A total of 248 subjects were recruited for this study. All subjects were classified into non-gamblers, social gamblers and pathological gamblers, and administered self-report questionnaires to measure irrational gambling beliefs, the probability inference error, the attriburional style, and the attributional bias. A pathological gambler group scored highest on irrational gambling beliefs, especially the overestimation of self-ability factor, and a social gambler group and a non-gambler group follow. All three groups scored higher on the magnification of gambling skills than the mean (4.0) of the scale. Pathological gamblers and social gamblers scored higher on the probability thinking error than non-gamblers. Pathological gamblers displayed higher external attribution, lower internal attribution in their daily life events and higher internal attribution in failure situation than social gamblers and non-gamblers. The results indicate that cognitive errors would be a factor that differentiates pathological gamblers from social gamblers and non-gamblers. In predicting gambling behaviors, overestimation of self-ability of irrational gambling beliefs, internal attribution in failure situation, external attribution in daily live event, and probability thinking error were identified as significant factors. It is concluded that a public education about common cognitive bias featured in gamblers might be important in prevention of pathological gambling behaviors.

Validation of Significant Wave Height from Satellite Altimeter in the Seas around Korea and Error Characteristics

  • Significant Wave Height (SWH) data measured by satellite altimeters (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1, Envisat, and Jason-2) were validated in the seas around Korea by comparison with wave height measurements from marine meteorological buoy stations of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). A total of 1,070 collocation matchups between Ku-band satellite altimeter data and buoy data were obtained for the periods of the four satellites from 1992 to the present. In the case of C-band and S-band observations, 1,086 matchups were obtained and used to assess the accuracy of satellite SWH. Root-Mean-Square (RMS) errors of satellite SWH measured with Ku-band were evaluated to roughly 0.2_2.1 m. Comparisons of the RMS errors and bias errors between different frequency bands revealed that SWH observed with Ku-band was much more accurate than other frequencies, such as C-band or S-band. The differences between satellite SWH and buoy wave height, satellite minus buoy, revealed some dependence on the magnitude of the wave height. Satellite SWH tended to be overestimated at a range of low wave height of less than 1 m, and underestimated for high wave height of greater than 2 m. Such regional characteristics imply that satellite SWH should be carefully used when employed for diverse purposes such as validating wave model results or data assimilation procedures. Thus, this study confirmed that satellite SWH products should be continuously validated for regional applications.

Localization of Outdoor Wheeled Mobile Robots using Indirect Kalman Filter Based Sensor fusion (간접 칼만 필터 기반의 센서융합을 이용한 실외 주행 이동로봇의 위치 추정)

  • This paper presents a localization algorithm of the outdoor wheeled mobile robot using the sensor fusion method based on indirect Kalman filter(IKF). The wheeled mobile robot considered with in this paper is approximated to the two wheeled mobile robot. The mobile robot has the IMU and encoder sensor for inertia positioning system and GPS. Because the IMU and encoder sensor have bias errors, divergence of the estimated position from the measured data can occur when the mobile robot moves for a long time. Because of many natural and artificial conditions (i.e. atmosphere or GPS body itself), GPS has the maximum error about $10{\sim}20m$ when the mobile robot moves for a short time. Thus, the fusion algorithm of IMU, encoder sensor and GPS is needed. For the sensor fusion algorithm, we use IKF that estimates the errors of the position of the mobile robot. IKF proposed in this paper can be used other autonomous agents (i.e. UAV, UGV) because IKF in this paper use the position errors of the mobile robot. We can show the stability of the proposed sensor fusion method, using the fact that the covariance of error state of the IKF is bounded. To evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm, simulation and experimental results of IKF for the position(x-axis position, y-axis position, and yaw angle) of the outdoor wheeled mobile robot are presented.

Assessment of Ocean Surface Current Forecasts from High Resolution Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (고해상도 기후예측시스템의 표층해류 예측성능 평가)

  • In the present study, we assess the GloSea5 (Global Seasonal Forecasting System version 5) near-surface ocean current forecasts using globally observed surface drifter dataset. Annual mean surface current fields at 0-day forecast lead time are quite consistent with drifter-derived velocity fields, and low values of root mean square (RMS) errors distributes in global oceans, except for regions of high variability, such as the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, Kuroshio, and Gulf Stream. Moreover a comparison with the global high-resolution forecasting system, HYCOM (Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model), signifies that GloSea5 performs well in terms of short-range surface-current forecasts. Predictions from 0-day to 4-week lead time are also validated for the global ocean and regions covering the main ocean basins. In general, the Indian Ocean and tropical regions yield relatively high RMS errors against all forecast lead times, whilst the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans show low values. RMS errors against forecast lead time ranging from 0-day to 4-week reveal the largest increase rate between 0-day and 1-week lead time in all regions. Correlation against forecast lead time also reveals similar results. In addition, a strong westward bias of about $0.2m\;s^{-1}$ is found along the Equator in the western Pacific on the initial forecast day, and it extends toward the Equator of the eastern Pacific as the lead time increases.

Coordinate Accuracy Comparison of Online GPS Data Processing Services (온라인 GPS 자료처리 서비스의 좌표 정확도 비교분석)

  • In this study, the performance of the online GPS processing services provided by diverse institutions was compared so that domestic GPS users in geodesy and surveying can easily get precise coordinates using those services. In order to evaluate the accuracy of each online GPS processing service, we calculated coordinates of seven GPS permanent stations located in Korea and foreign countries using APPS, CSRS-PPP, AUSPOS and OPUS. And the results were compared with published coordinates by IERS and National Geographic Information Institute. In the cases of foreign stations, the mean value of the horizontal errors was 9.3 mm and the descending order of accuracies was APPS, AUSPOS, OPUS and CSRS-PPP. In the cases of Korean stations, the mean value of the horizontal errors was 37.6 mm, although the order of accuracy was similar to the foreign cases; AUSPOS, APPS, OPUS and CSRS-PPP. Also, the average value of 3-D errors in Korean cases was about 3 cm larger than that of foreign cases and a bias of 3 cm was observed in the north direction.

Developing GPS Code Multipath Grid Map (CMGM) of Domestic Reference Station (국내 기준국의 GPS 코드 다중경로오차 격자지도 생성)

  • This study develops a Global Positioning System (GPS) Code Multipath Grid Map (CMGM) of each individual domestic reference station from the extracted code multipath of measurement data. Multipath corresponds to signal reflection/refraction caused by obstacles around the receiver antenna, and it is a major source of error that cannot be eliminated by differencing. From the receiver-independent exchange format (RINEX) data for two days, the associated code multipath of a satellite tracking arc is extracted. These code multipath data go through bias correction and interpolation to yield the CMGM with respect to the azimuth and elevation angles. The effect of the CMGM on multipath mitigation is then quantitatively analyzed to improve the Root Mean Square (RMS) of averaged pseudo multipath. Furthermore, the single point positioning (SPP) accuracy is analyzed in terms of the RMS of the horizontal and vertical errors. During two weeks in February 2023, the RMSs of the averaged pseudo multipath for five reference stations decreased by about 40% on average after CMGM application. Also, the SPP accuracies increased by about 7% for horizontal errors and about 10% for vertical errors on average after CMGM application. The overall quantitative analysis indicates that the proposed approach will reduce the convergence time of Differential Global Navigation Satellite System (DGNSS), Real-Time Kinematic (RTK), and Precise Point Positioning (PPP)-RTK correction information in real-time to use measurement data whose code multipath is corrected and mitigated by the CMGM.

  • In this paper, the performance improvement for the new KMA's Climate Prediction System (GloSea6), which has been built and tested in 2021, is presented by assessing the bias distribution of basic variables from 24 years of GloSea6 hindcasts. Along with the upgrade from GloSea5 to GloSea6, the performance of GloSea6 can be regarded as notable in many respects: improvements in (i) negative bias of geopotential height over the tropical and mid-latitude troposphere and over polar stratosphere in boreal summer; (ii) cold bias of tropospheric temperature; (iii) underestimation of mid-latitude jets; (iv) dry bias in the lower troposphere; (v) cold tongue bias in the equatorial SST and the warm bias of Southern Ocean, suggesting the potential of improvements to the major climate variability in GloSea6. The warm surface temperature in the northern hemisphere continent in summer is eliminated by using CDF-matched soil-moisture initials. However, the cold bias in high latitude snow-covered area in winter still needs to be improved in the future. The intensification of the westerly winds of the summer Asian monsoon and the weakening of the northwest Pacific high, which are considered to be major errors in the GloSea system, had not been significantly improved. However, both the use of increased number of ensembles and the initial conditions at the closest initial dates reveals possibility to improve these biases. It is also noted that the effect of ensemble expansion mainly contributes to the improvement of annual variability over high latitudes and polar regions.

Validation of Satellite Altimeter-Observed Significant Wave Height in the North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean (1992-2016) (북태평양과 북대서양에서의 위성 고도계 관측 유의파고 검증 (1992-2016))

  • Satellite-observed significant wave heights (SWHs), which are widely used to understand the response of the ocean to climate change, require long-term and continuous validation. This study examines the accuracy and error characteristics of SWH observed by nine satellite altimeters in the North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean for 25 years (1992-2016). A total of 137,929 matchups were generated to compare altimeter-observed SWH and in-situ measurements. The altimeter SWH showed a bias of 0.03 m and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.27 m, indicating relatively high accuracy in the North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean. However, the spatial distribution of altimeter SWH errors showed notable differences. To better understand the error characteristics of altimeter-observed SWH, errors were analyzed with respect to in-situ SWH, time, latitude, and distance from the coast. Overestimation of SWH was observed in most satellite altimeters when in-situ SWH was low, while underestimation was observed when in-situ SWH was high. The errors of altimeter-observed SWH varied seasonally, with an increase during winter and a decrease during summer, and the variability of errors increased at higher latitudes. The RMSEs showed high accuracy of less than 0.3 m in the open ocean more than 100 km from the coast, while errors significantly increased to more than 0.5 m in coastal regions less than 15 km. These findings underscore the need for caution when analyzing the spatio-temporal variability of SWH in the global and regional oceans using satellite altimeter data.

Determination of the Depletion Depth of the Deep Depletion Charge-Coupled Devices

  • A 3-D numerical simulation of a buried-channel CCD (Charge Coupled Device) with a deep depletion has been performed to investigate its electrical and physical behaviors. Results are presented for a deep depletion CCD (EEV CCD12; JET-X CCD) fabricated on a high-resistivity $(1.5k\Omega-cm)\;65{\mu}m$ thick epi-layer, on a $550{\mu}m$ thick p+ substrate, which is optimized for X-ray detection. Accurate predictions of the Potential minimum and barrier height of a CCD Pixel as a function of mobile electrons are found to give good charge transfer. The depletion depth approximation as a function of gate and substrate bias voltage provided average errors of less than 6%, compared with the results estimated from X-ray detection efficiency measurements. The result obtained from the transient simulation of signal charge movement is also presented based on 3-Dimensional analysis.
