  • Purpose : This meta-analysis was aimed at guiding future research in stroke treatment and to provide real-world data relating to the effects of aquatic exercise therapy on balance in patients with chronic stroke. Methods : We performed a meta-analysis comprising 22 studies involving aquatic exercise therapy performed between 2006 and 2017. A meta-analysis software program was used to calculate the mean effect size, effect size by intervention, and effect size by outcome. We also performed a meta-regression analysis and an analysis of publishing bias. Results : The mean effect size was 0.563. The effect size by outcome was observed to be the largest for the functional reach test, followed by the Berg balance scale, balance equipment, the Timed Up and Go test and one leg standing. Meta-regression analysis showed that effect size increased with an increase in the duration, number, length of exercise session. Conclusion : Aquatic exercise therapy appears to show a moderate effect on balance in patients with chronic stroke. A meta-analysis is warranted for further research to determine the effects of aquatic exercise on walking, muscle strength, and range of motion.

  • Quantum effects in the poly-gate are analyzed in two dimensions using the density-gradient method, and their impact on the short-channel effect of double-gate MOSFETs is investigated. The 2-D effects of quantum mechanical depletion at the gate to sidewall oxide is identified as the cause of large charge-dipole formation at the corner of the gate. The bias dependence of the charge dipole shows that the magnitude of the dipole peak-value increases in the subthreshold region and there is a large difference in carrier and potential distribution compared to the classical solution. Using evanescent-nude analysis, it is found that the quantum effect in the poly-gate substantially increases the short-channel effect and it is more significant than the quantum effect in the Si film. The penetration of potential contours into the poly-gate due to the dipole formation at the drain side of the gate corner is identified as the reason for the substantial increase in short-channel effects.

  • The purpose of this study is to systematically review and to objectively identify the effect size in order to understand the effects of horticultural therapy on cognitive function, depression, self-esteem, and activity daily living(ADL) of dementia patients. Related studies published in Korean and English were selected by searching domestic and foreign academic databases. The risk of bias assessment of individual studies was performed on the included 18 literatures. Horticultural therapy was found to be significantly effective in cognitive function(effect size=1.06), depression(effect size=0.64), self-esteem(effect size=0.99), and ADL(effect size=1.98) in dementia care. It is expected that related experimental studies will be repeatedly conducted to produce a more objective effect size calculation.

  • The purpose of this study was to research how emotional factors affect decision-making on the maintenance and abandonment of a patent, and to present new criteria for patent policies. The types of Korean patent abandonment were analyzed according to the patent holding period, and a questionnaire survey was carried out to verify whether there are differences among patentees in terms of sunk cost bias, endowment effect, and coupling or not. Individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises showed relatively greater emotional bias toward sunk cost and endowment effect than large companies, and the sunk cost effect decreased as decision-making experience increased. In addition, the reduction in the payment cycle of the patent renewal fee has a positive effect on the increase in the willingness to use the patent right, and the individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises has a greater synergistic effect than the case of large companies, in particular. This study are expected to play a part in establishing policies to minimize wasteful factors of patent assets based on the propensity of the patentees.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical studies which focus on acupuncture's effect on anxiety disorder. Methods: We selected clinical studies through six databases. We then examined the characteristics of the selected studies and conducted an assessment for Risk of Bias (ROB). Results: Seventeen randomized-controlled trials were selected to determine the effects of acupuncture on anxiety disorders. We found that the risk of bias in most studies was unclear. The intervention of 7 seventeen randomized-controlled trials (RCT) was basic acupuncture, 8 RCT involved electric acupuncture, 2 RCT consisted of acupuncture and Moxibustion. Four of the 7 basic acupuncture RCTs and 5 of the 8 electric acupuncture RCTs had a significant effect on anxiety factors for anxiety disorders. Conclusions: Acupuncture treatment for anxiety disorders was found to be effective compared to the controls, or there was no difference in effectiveness compared to the controls. However, the quality of the included studies was low, and there only were a small number of studies. Therefore, well-designed studies and a greater number of the studies are needed.

  • Quantum dots(QDs) with their tunable luminescence properties are uniquely suited for use as lumophores in light emitting device. We investigate the microstructural effect on the electroluminescence(EL). Here we report the use of inorganic semiconductors as robust charge transport layers, and demonstrate devices with light emission. We chose mechanically smooth and compositionally amorphous films to prevent electrical shorts. We grew semiconducting oxide films with low free-carrier concentrations to minimize quenching of the QD EL. The hole transport layer(HTL) and electron transport layer(ETL) were chosen to have carrier concentrations and energy-band offsets similar to the QDs so that electron and hole injection into the QD layer was balanced. For the ETL and the HTL, we selected a 40-nm-thick $ZnSnO_x$ with a resistivity of $10{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, which show bright and uniform emission at a 10 V applied bias. Light emitting uniformity was improved by reducing the rpm of QD spin coating. At a QD concentration of 15.0 mg/mL, we observed bright and uniform electroluminescence at a 12 V applied bias. The significant decrease in QD luminescence can be attributed to the non-uniform QD layers. This suggests that we should control the interface between QD layers and charge transport layers to improve the electroluminescence.

  • Smaller size and higher integration of electronic systems make narrower interconnect pitch not only in chip-level but also in package-level. Moreover electronic systems are required to operate in harsher conditions, that is, higher current / voltage, elevated temperature / humidity, and complex chemical contaminants. Under these severe circumstances, electronic components respond to applied voltages by electrochemically ionization of metals and conducting filament forms between anode and cathode across a nonmetallic medium. This phenomenon is called as the electrochemical migration. Many kinds of metal (Cu, Ag, SnPb, Sn etc) using in electronic packages are failed by ECM. Eutectic SnPb which is used in various electronic packaging structures, that is, printed circuit boards, plastic-encapsulated packages, organic display panels, and tape chip carriers, chip-on-films etc. And the material for soldering (eutectic SnPb) using in electronic package easily makes insulation failure by ECM. In real PCB system, not only metals but also many chemical species are included. And these chemical species act as resources of contamination. Model test systems were developed to characterize the migration phenomena without contamination effect. The serpentine-shape pattern was developed for analyzing relationship of applied voltage bias and failure lifetime by the temperature / humidity biased(THB) test.

  • The detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) caused of mutant or genetic diseases is important to diagnosis and medicine. There are many methods have been proposed to detect SNPs. However the detection of SNPs is difficulty, because the difference of energy between complementary DNA (cDMA) and SNPs is very small. In this work, we detect the SNPs using field-effect transistors (FETs) which based on the detection of negative charge of DNA. We bias -0.3 V on the drain-source electrode at the target DNA hybridization process. The efficiency of hybridization and the amplitude of signal decrease by repulsive force between negative charge of DNA and negative bias on the electrode. However, the sensitivity of SNPs increases about 5 times from 1.7 mV to 8.7 mV.

  • This study analyzed the effects of labor unions on the wages of Korean female workers using 'Korean Labor and Income Panel Study.' In the estimation we considered the self-selection bias due to the women's labor force participation decision and a plausible non-response bias from not answering the question about the company size in terms of number of employees. By fixed effect estimation we found that labor unions in Korea do not increase the wages of both the female union workers and non-union workers who work at a company in which a union is organized comparing to female workers who work at company without a union. This results indicates that female workers who work in the company with labor union tend to have unobserved characteristics that are positively correlated with both wages and the probability to enter the company with labor union. We also came to the conclusion that there is no free-rider effects of non-union workers.
