Improvements in various health indices have been ushered in, along with soaring economic growth in the last few decades in Korea. Life span of Koreans at present stands at somewhere around age of seventies. It seems of worth to elucidate some facets of health profile of historic Koreans during Yi dynasty encompassing about five hundreds years between the 14th and 19th century. Datas on health of historic Koreans are meager with exception for sovereigns for whom royal archives have been preserved intact through centuries. Though the health environments for monarchs are, no doubt, incomparable to that of the grassroot levels during the same period, health profile of monarchs would facilitate to assess health indices for historic Koreans during Yi dynasty. Arithmetic average of life span of 25 consecutive Kings(omitted the last two Kings under Japanese control) is 44.6 years of age 81 year old for King Yongjo and 16 year old for King Danjong, representing two extremes. The principal causes of death are septicemia, subsequent to infections of soft tissue and ether organs(8 in number, one-thirds of all). Secondly, both epidemic disease and vascular accidents caused deaths of three Kings each. Two kings succumbed to diabets and one suicide. The causes for the remainder, eight kings are hardly ciarified. The monarchs who contributed in establishment of new Yi dynasty with highspirited and disciplined survied beyond their fifties and sixties. In contrast, those who reigned during mid - era of the dynasty at its culmination succumbed to death in their young adulthood, most likely due to their indulgence in court life.
In a tactical-edge environment, where multiple weapon resources are coordinated together via services, it is essential to make an efficient binding between an abstract service and a resource that are needed to execute composite services for accomplishing a given mission. However, the tactical network that is used in military operation has low bandwidth and a high rate of packet loss. Therefore, communication overhead between services must be minimized to execute composite services in a stable manner in the tactical network. In addition, a tactical-edge environment changes dynamically, and it affects the connectivity and bandwidth of the tactical network. To deal with these characteristics of the tactical network we propose two service-resource reallocation methods which minimize the communication overhead between service gateways and effectively manage neutralization of gateways during distributed service coordination. We compared the effectiveness of these two - methods in terms of total communication overhead between service gateways and resource-allocation similarity between the initial resource allocation and the reallocation result.

In this study, comprehensive air quality monitoring was undertaken with a variety of objectives to collect data on the levels of various indoor and ambient air quality parameters in the urban areas of Seoul and Taegu. The sampling sites were comprised of six offices, six residences and six restaurants in each city. The ambient air adjacent to the indoor sites was also simultaneously sampled for the same constituents. The sampling was conducted in two phases: summer of 1994 and winter of 1994/95. A range of air quality parameters were measured simultaneously, which include RSP, CO, COB, NOB, a range of VOC, airborne microbials, temperature, and relative humidity. The indoor and ambient levels of the pollutants measured in this study varied widely between the three types of environments studied. Comparison of median values for the three groups revealed that restaurants had higher indoor levels of most pollutants than homes or offices. There was also a clear pattern of the indoor levels of target pollutants being higher than those outdoors, particularly in restaurants. Concentrations of CO and most of the VOC were found to be significantly higher in the commercial districts, indicating the influence of vehicle exhaust emissions. A very wide range of VOC levels was documented in this study. Although median indoorloutdoor ratios indicated a generally increasing level of VOC indoors when compared to those outdoors, no statistically significant differences were found between indoor and outdoor VOC levels in homes and offices, implying the importance of ambient air quality in determining the quality of indoor air for homes and offices in urban areas. In addition, there was a general pattern of increasing concentrations from summer to winter, and similarly from outdoor to indoor air for nearly all target compounds. The seasonal differences in median levels were very clearly seen for fuel combustion related pollutants such as RSP, CO and VOC, this being attributed to the effects of increased fuel consumption during the cold season and to meteorological factors.

CORBA IDL and RMI, the representative of distributed object model, support different approaches for distributed computing environments. CORBA approach does not support the application generated by RMI, even though it supports multiple programming languages. Object translation system between RMI to CORBA is designed and implemented for interoperability of distributed objects on the two different distributed programming environments. Suggested system is considered binding, inheritance, polymorphism, object passing, and callback which are key properties on the distributed objects. To validate the usefulness of the proposed system, we adopt a model for distrubuted objects and implement it as an application on the RMI environment. And, we translated it to an application on the CORBA environment. We observed the performance of translated application in the respect of inheritance, object passing, polymorphism across the machine boundary. Experiments showed that performance of distributed objects, those generated by translation system and those implemented on the CORBA environment, is equivalent.

The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics of literature on the residential environments of Korean-Chinese people residing in China. The number of such studies on residential environment is a total of 123, of which 86 (69.9%) are Korean studies and 37 (30.1%) are Chinese studies. Research has been conducted in China since the 1980s, but from 1990s onward, research was conducted in Korea following the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations. More studies related to history, society, and tradition have been conducted in China than Korea because China is a multiracial nation and Korean-Chinese people comprise an ethnic minority. In terms of residential environment, the majority of studies are related to architecture and space and are typically focused on villages and housing. Studies on traditional housing of the Korean-Chinese focus on general characteristics of traditional housing, targeting China's three northeast provinces and the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of China. Studies on modern housing of the Korean-Chinese have mainly been conducted in Yanji City in China. The reason for this is that 41% of Yanji City's population is Korean-Chinese, a distinct difference can be seen between Yanji City and other areas regarding changes of modern housing, and ondol (the traditional Korean floor heating system) is commonly found in modern housing there.
Physical and biological environmental variations in the East Sea were investigated by analysing time-series of oceanographic data and meteorological indices. From 1971 to 2000, dominant periodicity in water temperature variations had two apparent periods of 3 to 4 years and of decades, especially in the southwestern part of the East Sea affected by the influence of inflowing Tsushima warm current. Fluctuating water temperature within a certain period appears to respond to El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ events with a time lag. It was found that there was a strong correlation between water temperature and El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ events with a time lag of 1.5 and 5.5 years for periods of 3 to 6 years and of decades, respectively. Corresponding with El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ events, water temperature variability also showed strong correlation with shift and/or changes in biological and chemical environments of nutrient concentrations, zooplankton biomass, and fisheries. However, there also occurred a short-term periodicity of water temperature variations. Within a period of 1 to 4 years, a relatively short-term cycle of water temperature variation had strong correlation with other climate indices such as Pacific Decadal Oscillation and monsoon index. After comparing coherence and phase spectrum between water temperature and different climate indices, we found that there was a shift of coherent periods to another climate index during the years when climate regime shift was reported.

The environment in which a given genotype is grown may influence its grain quality characteristics. When varieties are $\times$ evaluated over numerous environments, a variety environment interaction usually is observed, but the relative magnitude of environmental(E), genetic(G), and G $\times$ E effects on quality is unclear. In order to determine relative contribution of genotype, environment, and G $\times$ E interaction to the variations observed in grain quality characteristics, 18 Korean wheat cultivars and experimental lines were evaluated in two environments in 1998 and 1999. Correlation coefficients between grain quality and agronomic characteristics were also estimated. The analysis of variance for the optical density obtained by reaction bet- ween gliadin and anti-gliadin polyclonal antibody (AGPab) indicated that gliadin content measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay(ELISA) was significantly in- fluenced by environment and cultivar differences. The significant differences of year and year $\times$ location were also found. The ratio of the variances associated with environmental effects to the variances associated with genetic effect gave relatively greater influence of environmental factor on gliadin content. The different protein content from same genotype grown in different environment might be associated with degree of storage protein accumulations. Significant relationships between ELISA and protein content, yield, ten spike weight, and ten spike number were detected. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity was significantly influenced by year, location, cultivar and year $\times$ location. The variance in grain PPO activities among growing years appeared larger than the variation produced by the cultivar examined. This suggested that the growing environment contributed more to variability in grain PPO concentration.
Recently the study on service robots has been proliferated in many fields, and there are active developments for indoor services such as supporting for elderly people. It is important for robot to recognize objects and situations appropriately for effective and accurate service. Conventional object recognition methods have been based on the pre-defined geometric models, but they have limitations in indoor environments with uncertain situation such as the target objects are occluded by other ones. In this paper we propose a Bayesian network model to reason the probability of target objects for effective detection. We model the relationships between objects by activities, which are applied to non-static environments more flexibly. Overall structure is constructed by combining common-cause structures which are the units making relationship between objects, and it makes design process more efficient. We test the performance of two Bayesian networks for verifying the proposed Bayesian network model through experiments, resulting in accuracy of $86.5\%$ and $89.6\%$ respectively.

Password-based authentication key exchange (PAKE) protocols in the literature typically assume a password that is shared between a client and a server. PAKE has been applied in various environments, especially in the “client-server” applications of remotely accessed systems, such as e-banking. With the rapid developments in modern communication environments, such as ad-hoc networks and ubiquitous computing, it is customary to construct a secure peer-to-peer channel, which is quite a different paradigm from existing paradigms. In such a peer-to-peer channel, it would be much more common for users to not share a password with others. In this paper, we consider password-based authentication key exchange in the three-party setting, where two users do not share a password between themselves but only with one server. The users make a session-key by using their different passwords with the help of the server. We propose an efficient password-based authentication key exchange protocol with different passwords that achieves forward secrecy in the standard model. The protocol requires parties to only memorize human-memorable passwords; all other information that is necessary to run the protocol is made public. The protocol is also light-weighted, i.e., it requires only three rounds and four modular exponentiations per user. In fact, this amount of computation and the number of rounds are comparable to the most efficient password-based authentication key exchange protocol in the random-oracle model. The dispensation of random oracles in the protocol does not require the security of any expensive signature schemes or zero-knowlegde proofs.

Samples from two boreholes of coastal dune field at Jangho-ri coast, Gochang was studied. These were analyzed by grain size analysis geochemical analysis, and the application of OSL dating method to understand the development during the Holocene. The boreholes SB8 and SB9 were classified into three different sedimentary layers by their mean grain size and geochemical characteristics. The results revealed that the upper sand layer is equivalent to the present coastal dune layer, which developed since 1,200 years ago; the silt layer in the middle to the dune slack or lagoon sedimentation layer, which developed between 1,200 and 6,000 years ago; and the sand layer at the bottom to the paleo coastal dune that developed between 6,000 and 7,000 years ago. It was proposed that the forming material of current coastal dune was supplied from the sandy flat in coastal area, while the middle silt layer was supplied from the weathered soil of a bed rock by the comparison with material of surrounding area. In the case of coastal dune, concentrated layer of sands were identified which were buried about 300 and 1,200 years ago, which is identified as the little ice age. This study confirmed the development of Jangho-ri coastal dunes after Holocene Climate Optimum period, and it is likely to assist in the understanding of coastal dunes development.
