Background: Antihyperglycemic effects of Panax ginseng berry have never been explored in humans. The aims of this study were to assess the efficacy and safety of a 12-wk treatment with ginseng berry extract in participants with a fasting glucose level between 100 mg/dL and 140 mg/dL. Methods: This study was a 12-wk, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. A total of 72 participants were randomly allocated to two groups of either ginseng berry extract or placebo, and 63 participants completed the study. The parameters related to glucose metabolism were assessed. Results: Although the present study failed to show significant antihyperglycemic effects of ginseng berry extract on the parameters related to blood glucose and lipid metabolism in the total study population, it demonstrated that ginseng berry extract could significantly decrease serum concentration of fasting glucose by 3.7% (p = 0.035), postprandial glucose at 60 min during 75 g oral glucose tolerance test by 10.7% (p = 0.006), and the area under the curve for glucose by 7.7% (p = 0.024) in those with fasting glucose level of 110 mg/dL or higher, while the placebo group did not exhibit a statistically significant decrease. Safety profiles were not different between the two groups. Conclusion: The present study suggests that ginseng berry extract has the potential to improve glucose metabolism in human, especially in those with fasting glucose level of 110 mg/dL or higher. For a more meaningful benefit, further research in people with higher blood glucose levels is required.

Background: The leaves of the goji berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) are used as raw materials in processing and by replace fruits to some extent. The reason is that the leaves are cheaper, however, betaine content is higher than in the fruits. These experiments were conducted to determine the planting density and cutting height for producing a large number of leaves. Methods and Results: The cultivar 'Myeongan' with many branches was used. When the shoot height reached 50 cm - 70 cm, harvesting was possible four times a year. The time to next harvest was approximately 38 days after regeneration of new shoots. Leaf quantity was in the order of 1st > 2nd > 4th > 3rd harvest. Insect damage occurred during the third harvest in late July and early August, therefore, eco-friendly control was necessary. The total yield was higher at the planting density 60 cm × 30 cm than that of 60 cm × 20 cm or 60 cm × 40 cm. The yield at cutting for shoot height of 60 cm was increased by 6.3 percent compared to that of 50 cm, At the cutting height of 70 cm, harvest was difficult owing to hardening of stems and thorns. Betaine content, an indicator component of goji berry, was not significantly different according to planting densities and cutting height. Conclusions: The ideal cutting period to produce leaves of goji berry for processing is when the shoots grow to approximately 60 cm, and the leaves can be harvested 4 times a year. The dried-leaf yield was highest at the planting density of 60 cm × 30 cm.
We analyzed berry skin coloration, anthocyanin accumulation, and plant hormone contents in berry skins to determine the effect of night temperature at veraison on berry skin coloration in 'Kyoho' grapevines (Vitis labruscana L.). Vines were grown under 21, 24, and 27℃ at night for 20 days at veraison, from 40 to 60 days after full bloom (DAFB). Berry skin coloration of 'Kyoho' grapes was more suppressed in 27℃ treated vines, followed by that in 24℃ treated vines, than that in 21℃ treated vines. Cluster and berry weight and soluble solids content was lower in 24 and 27℃ treated vines than in 21℃ treated vines. Anthocyanin started to accumulate from 60 DAFB in berry skin of 21℃ treated vines, and malvidin and total anthocyanin content increased until 100 DAFB. The total and most of the individual anthocyanins decreased in 24 and 27℃ treated vines; however, peonidin did not decrease in 24℃ treated vines compared to that in 21℃ treated vines. Abscisic acid (ABA) peaked at veraison in berry skins of 21℃ treated vines and decreased thereafter until 100 DAFB. The increase in ABA content was inhibited in berry skins of 24 and 27℃ treated vines. Gibberellin (GA) content in berry skins decreased rapidly at veraison, with the decrease being slower under 27℃ than under 21℃. ABA/GA in berry skins of 21℃ treated vines peaked at 60 DAFB and decreased thereafter until 100 DAFB. However, ABA/GA decreased in berry skins of 24 and 27℃ treated vines, with reduced anthocyanin accumulation. Therefore, high night temperature (above 24℃) at veraison suppressed the berry skin coloration of 'Kyoho' grapes with changes in anthocyanin contents and composition due to the decrease in ABA/GA ratio and fruit soluble solids contents.

Background: Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) plays an anti-inflammatory role in a variety of inflammatory diseases such as gastritis, hepatitis, and colitis. However, inflammation-regulatory activity of the calyx of the P. ginseng berry has not been thoroughly evaluated. To understand whether the calyx portion of the P. ginseng berry is able to ameliorate inflammatory processes, an ethanolic extract of P. ginseng berry calyx (Pg-C-EE) was prepared, and lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophages and HEK293 cells transfected with inflammation-regulatory proteins were used to test the anti-inflammatory action of Pg-C-EE. Methods: The ginsenoside contents of Pg-C-EE were analyzed by HPLC. Suppressive activity of Pg-C-EE on NO production, inflammatory gene expression, transcriptional activation, and inflammation signaling events were examined using the Griess assay, reverse transcription-polymerization chain reaction, luciferase activity reporter gene assay, and immunoblotting analysis. Results: Pg-C-EE reduced NO production and diminished mRNA expression of inflammatory genes such as cyclooxygenase-2, inducible NO synthase, and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ in a dose-dependent manner. This extract suppressed luciferase activity induced only by nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$. Interestingly, immunoblotting analysis results demonstrated that Pg-C-EE reduced the activities of protein kinase B (AKT)1 and AKT2. Conclusion: These results suggest that Pg-C-EE may have nuclear-factor-${\kappa}B$-targeted anti-inflammatory properties through suppression of AKT. The calyx of the P. ginseng berry is an underused part of the ginseng plant, and development of calyx-derived extracts may be useful for treatment of inflammatory diseases.
We analyzed the skin coloration and anthocyanin composition of 'Kyoho' and 'Heukboseok' grape berries to determine the cause of poor coloring in 'Kyoho' berry skins under high temperature (HT) at veraison. Although the skin coloration inhibited in both 'Kyoho' and 'Heukboseok' berries under HT for 30 days from veraison, the total anthocyanin content in 'Heukboseok' berry skins increased to the level of control after the end of temperature treatment, but 'Kyoho' did not increase. Malvidin derivatives were most significantly reduced in 'Kyoho' berry skins, followed by those of delphinidin and petunidin. Among individual anthocyanins, diglucosides and acylated malvidin derivatives were most decreased in 'Kyoho' berry skins. Acylated and tri-hydroxylated anthocyanins were reduced more than those of non-acylated and dihydroxylated, respectively. All different types of anthocyanin components in 'Kyoho' berry skins decreased by HT, and they were similar to that of total anthocyanin. In 'Heukboseok' berry skins, accumulations of all different types of anthocyanins were inhibited by HT, and increased to the level of control after the end of the treatment. These results suggest that the poor coloration of 'Kyoho' under HT at veraison was not caused by the decrease of specific anthocyanins but because the whole anthocyanin biosynthesis was suppressed by HT.
This experiment was carried out to study the characteristics and composition of the oil extracted from elder berry seeds. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The elder berry fruits are composed of $1.56%{\sim}2.50%$ crude lipid, $2.50{\sim}6.10%$ crude protein, $0.7{\sim}1.3%$ crude ash, 0.73% pectin and the fresh whole fruits bore $6{\sim}7%$ of its seeds on weight basis. 2. The hot pressed oil had similar flavor and taste to sesame oil, and cold, pressed one, to olive oil. Its iodine value ranged $95{\sim}110$, and its oil extraction rate from seed $26.18{\sim}26.55%$. 3. The elder berry seed oil contained a high level of essential fatty acids, and the oil seed cakes, $12.65{\sim}18.65%$ of crude protein. These may be utilized as concentrated fodder for livestock.
This study was conducted to select plant growth regulators effective at ginseng berry set inhibition to help root growth in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). PGRs (ethephon, gibberellic acid, maleic hydrazide, coumarin) were applied to field grown 5-year-old Korean ginseng between one and two times, before and during bloom in 2009, 2010. The number of treatment was more effective in ginseng berry set inhibition when used two times compared with one time in GA 1,000 ppm, MH (5,000, 10,000 ppm), coumarin (5,000, 10,000 ppm) treatment. According to treatment period of plant growth regulator, ginseng berry set inhibition rate from 20days before flowering date to 5days after blooming was the highest in MH 5000 ppm showing 99.9% and the lowest in GA 100 ppm showing 32.8%. The spray treatments of Ethephon (50, 150 ppm) and MH (5,000, 10,000 ppm) from 20 days before the flowering bloom up to 5 days before, and coumarin (5,000, 10,000 ppm) from 20 days to 6 days and before blooming that induced the inhibitory effect more than 90% after 12 weeks. Considering ginseng berry set inhibition characteristics and treatment period ethephon and coumarin was important about applied period but, MH treatment appeared to effective ginseng berry set inhibition regardless of treatment period.

This study was carried out to investigate suitable pruning methods to avoid poor berry setting of 'Kyoho' grapevine in Suwon and Anseong areas. Light pruning increased percentage of bud bursts and number of shoots per bearing mother branches(BMB), cluster weight and percentage of berry sating but it decreased shoot length, number of leaves and, leaf area and leaf weight. There was little difference in soluble solids, titratable acidity, and anthocyanin contents of berries by the treatment of either light or heavy pruning. Shoot length became longer as diameter of BMB thickened, leaf area and chlorophyll content also became larger and diameter of BMB. Total carbohydrate and N, P, K, Ca, and Mg contents showed significantly little difference, but total carbohydrate and Ca contents showed a tendency of continuous increase as diameter of BMB thinned. Number of seeded berries per cluster became fewer as BMB thinned but percentage of berry setting showed an increasing tendency. Cluster weight, berry weight, berry number per cluster, soluble solids, anthocyanin content were higher in case of around 1cm of diameters of BMB.
We investigated the transcriptional profiles of Japanese indigenous grape cultivar 'Koshu' (Vitis vinifera) leaf and berry skin during ripening. In leaf, 64 genes were abundantly transcribed at the end of $v{\acute{e}}raison$ (14 weeks post-flowering), whereas the expression of 61 genes was upregulated at the end of ripening (20 weeks post-flowering). In berry skin, 67 genes were abundantly transcribed at the end of $v{\acute{e}}raison$, whereas the expression of 86 genes was upregulated at the end of ripening. Gene expression associated with biological processes was activated in both tissues at the end of ripening. The expression of genes associated with photosynthesis, sugar synthesis, anthocyanin synthesis, cinnamic acid synthesis, and amino acid metabolism was observed in leaf and berry skin during ripening, together with the accumulation of sugars, anthocyanins, cinnamic acids, and amino acids. Transcripts of AUX/IAA family proteins that repress the activities of auxin-induced proteins were expressed in berry skin at the end of $v{\acute{e}}raison$. Transcripts of genes related to the ubiquitin-proteasome system that degrades AUX/IAA family proteins were abundantly expressed in berry skin at the end of ripening, suggesting that the expansion of skin cells at $v{\acute{e}}raison$ is suppressed by AUX/IAA family proteins, and that the ubiquitin-proteasome system induces the expansion of skin cells during ripening by degrading AUX/IAA family proteins. These transcriptional profiles, which provide new information on the characteristics of 'Koshu' grapevine during ripening, may explain the unique characteristics of 'Koshu' grape in comparison with those of European grapes used for winemaking, and may contribute to the improvement of 'Koshu' grape quality.

To investigate the effect of sawdust fermentation period and storage period after fermentation on development as food for P. brevitarsis larvae, individual and group breeding were conducted on berry sawdust and oak sawdust. In individual breeding, the growth period of P. brevitarsis larvae was reduced by 12 days from the 60-day fermentation of berry sawdust to the 40-day fermentation of berry sawdust, 30 days from the 90-day fermentation of oak sawdust, and the weight of the larvae was the heaviest. In group breeding, the time it takes for P. brevitarsis larvae to change from 1st to 3rd instar is about 30 days after hatching from 60-day fermentation of berry sawdust, while 90-day fermentation of oak sawdust took more than 60 days, so the growth speed was fast and the survival rate was good. The results of the farmhouse demonstration test were the same trend, and it was judged that it would be possible to produce P. brevitarsis larvae with berries fermented sawdust, and it would be advantageous in terms of economy. In addition, for both individual and group breeding, the growth period of P. brevitarsis larvae was longer as the storage period was longer, the weight of the larvae decreased, and the survival rate was no different. The development period of P. brevitarsis larvae was the longest in the storage period of 18 months for berries fermented sawdust, and the storage period of oak fermented sawdust was longer in the storage period of 12 months and 18 months. Therefore, considering the results of individual breeding and group breeding, the fermentation period was appropriate for 60 days for berries sawdust, and the storage period for berries sawdust was stable from 0 to 12 months, and 0 to 6 months for oak sawdust.
