Root absorption, translocation and metabolism studies of $^{14}C$-bensulfuron in rice and Cyperus serotinus Rottb. were conducted to determine their selective mode of action. Rice absorbed a greater amount of bensulfron than Cyperus serotinus. The translocation rates of bensulfuron from roots into shoots were much faster in Cyperus serotinus than rice plants. The metabolic rate of bensulfuron was very fast in rice plants, but slow in Cyperus serotinus and therefore, the amount of parent bensulfuron remained in the shoots after 12 hours absorption was greater in Cyperus serotinus than rice. In conclusion, this studies indicated that Cyperus serotinus was susceptible to bensulfuron because of the slower metabolic rate and fast translocation rate, but tolerance of rice might be caused by faster metabolic rate in plants.
This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of weed control by pyributicarb{O-[3-tert-butylphenyl] N-[6-methoxy-2-pyridyl]-N-methyl thiocarbamate}/bensulfuron-methyl{methyl 2-[[[[[[4, 6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl] amino] carbonyl] amino] sulfonyl] methyl] benzoate} SC and oxadiazon{5-tert-butyl-3-[2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3)-one}/bensulfuron-methyl SC, and to develope weed control methods for paddy rice. There was little difference between suspension concentrate and granule of pyributicarb/bensulfuron-methyl and oxadiazon/bensulfuron-methyl combination in the effect of weed control. Pyributicarb/bensulfuron-methyl SC and oxadiazon/bensulfuron-methyl SC were diffused from the point of application to 6m. Pyributicarb/bensulfuron-methyl SC applied on water surface from irrigation inlet and in paddy water from dike controlled more than 90% of weeds. Pyributicarb/bensulfuron-methyl SC was precipitated about 1-2cm per 1 hour after dripping on water surface. The efficacy of weed control by pyributicarb/bensulfuron-methyl SC was higher in 0-1cm than in 6-7cm standing water depth.
Absorption and translocation of bensulfuron-methyl {methyl 2[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl) amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]methyl]benzoate} in rice (Oryza sativa L.) as affected by mineral nutrients and mixed herbicides were determined using the $^{14}C-labeled$ herbicide in culture solution. Absorption of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ by the root decreased with increasing concentration of bensulfuron-methyl. However, increase in the application concentration did not affect movement of the $^{14}C$ to the shoot. There was no difference in total amount of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ taken up between absorption periods of 12 and 48 hours, whereas $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ translocated to the shoot increased with increasing the absorption period. When bensulfuron-methyl mixtures were applied, butachlor [N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2',6'-diethylphenyl)acetamide] did not affect absorption and translocation of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$. However, quinclorac (3,7-dichloro-8-quinoline carboxylic acid) mixed at a high concentration resulted in decrease in absorption and translocation of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$. Nutritional disorder such as deficient or excess supply of mineral nutrients caused to inhibit absorption of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$. The greatest decrease and delay of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ absorption and/or translocation occurred in N-deficient and S-excess supply conditions.
Absorption, translocation, and metabolism study of $^{14}C$-bensulfuron were conducted to determine selectivity and herbicidal action of bensulfuron in two rice cultivars and three paddy weeds at different temperatures. 1. Absorption of $^{14}C$-bensulfuron was greater at 30/$25^{\circ}C$ than at 25/$20^{\circ}C$ and also in cv. Sangpung than in cv. Samgang, and Cyperus serotinus and Sagittaria pygmaea showed greater amount of absorption than Echinochloa crus-galli. 2. Translocation rate of bensulfuron was higher at 30/$25^{\circ}C$ than at 25/$20^{\circ}C$ and also in cv. Sangpung than in cv. Samgang, and C. serotinus showed highest translocation rate followed by the S. pygmaea and E. crus-galli. 3. In metabolism study, concentration of parent compound in rice plants was greater in cv. Sangpung which was susceptible to bensulfuron than in cv. Samgang. More amount of parent compound was distributed in shoots and root of C. serotinus and S. pygmaea than E. crus-galli. 4. It may suggested that sensitivity to bensulfuron between rice cultivars may be due to different inactivation metabolic ability and phytotoxicity of rice increased at high temperature since higher amount of bensulfuron was absorbed. Higher herbicidal activity of bensulfuron may caused by higher absorption and translocation in three weed species at high temperature.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the factor of phytotoxicity for herbicides(bensulfuron methyl, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, dimepiperate, molinate) on flood direct-seeded rice. The phytotoxicity of herbicides was evaluated under controlled environment condition. Bensulfuron methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl reduced more rice growth, especially root growth on low temperature(20/$11^{\circ}C$) than high temperature(30/$22^{\circ}C$) cultivations. The phytotoxicity of bensulfuron methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl were increased relatively by non-nutrient and nutrient solution. cultivation, respectively. The rice applied bensulfuron methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl with pH 3.5, 5.5, 7.5 and 9.5 solution became low growth rate on low pH of pH 3.5 and 5.5 solution cultivation. Bensulfuron methyl application with pH 5.5 and pH 7.5 solution, and pyrazosulfuronethyl application with pH 7.5 and 9.5 solution reduced rice growth inhibition. The root growth of rice seeded in 6cm depth of water solution applied herbicides was suppressed by bensulftuon methyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, the growth of shoot was suppressed heavily by dimepiperate and molinate, in particular dimepiperate suppressed about the growth of 90%. The phytotoxicity of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl became high on light clay soil of non-fertilizer condition and sand loam soil of fertilizer condition, bensulfuron methyl became high on sand loam soil.
This experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of fertilizer for herbicides phytotoxicity of rice(Oryza sativa L. japonica cv Dongjin). The shoot and root growth of rice were inhibited more by pyrazosulfuron-ethyl or pyrazosulfuronethyl+molinate than bensulfuron methyl or bensulfuron methyl+dimepiperate application in nitrogen or nitrogen mixed solution. In phosphate or phosphate mixed solution, rice growth were inhibited more by bensulfuron methyl or bensulfuron methyl+dimepiperate than pyrazosulfuron-ethyl or pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+molinate application. In solution mixed with nitrogen and phosphate or fertilizer three elements, rice shoots were more. inhibited by pyrazosulfuron-ethyl or pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+molinate treatments, roots were inhibited more relatively by bensulfuron methyl or bensulfuron methyl+dimepiperate treatments. In all fertilizer solutions, rice plant heights were reduced by dimepiperate and molinate applications, but root growth was reduced only by nitrogen and phosphate mixed solution. Rice growth in sulfonylurea or their mixed herbicide application were more inhibited in high :nitrogen concentration arid by phosphate exclusion than by nitrogen exclusion culture.
Safening activities of optically active ${\alpha}$-methylbenzylphenylureas on crop injury of rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Tsukinohikari, japonica) caused by bensulfuron-methyl (methyl 2-[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]methyl]benzoate) and pyribenzoxim (benzophenone o-[2,6-bis[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)oxy]benzoyl]oxime) were investigated. Some derivatives of the optically active compounds exhibited strong safening activity against growth inhibition of rice by bensulfuron-methyl. Out of the derivatives tested, (S)-2,3-diCl and (S)-2-F-4-Me derivatives showed greater relieving activity than that of dymuron. In addition, the stress relieving activity was also obtained when they were applied at 4 days after bensulfuron-methyl treatment. On the other hand, crop injury caused by pyribenzoxim was relieved by about 95% with (S)-2-F-4-Me derivative in shoots and roots of rice seedlings.
The effect of bensulfuron-methyl on the nontargeted cyanobacteria was greater on A. variabillis than N. commune. Both A. variabillis and N. commune were initially able to utilize low concentrations of the herbicide, bensulfuron-methyl, whereas higher concentrations of bensulfuron-methyl or the hydrolyzed products of the herbicide were found to be toxic. Growth and photosynthesis inhibitions of over $50\%$ were observed, when 8 to 10 ppm of the herbicide was applied. Nitrogenase activities of the cyanobacteria were decreased by $94-98\%$ in A. variabillis and by $85-86\%$ in N. commune after 24 h of incubation with 10 ppm and 20 ppm of bensulfuron-methyl. Nitrogenase activities were also inhibited by the addition of ammonium salts as low as 0.05 mM. Furthermore, the toxic effect of the herbicide was the highest at pH 4-6, showing approximately $42-60\%$ toxicity, whereas much lower toxicity $(9-28\%)$ was observed at higher pH of 7-10, due to base-catalyzed hydrolysis of bensulfuron-methyl.
Physiological changes in Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi as affected by bensulfuron-methyl {Methyl 2-[[[[[(4, 6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl]amino] sulfonyl]methyl]benzoate} was determined to relate the characteristics with regrowth behavior. There were no changes in relative growth rate(RGR) during the period of growth cessation after application of bensulfuron-methyl. RGR's of the growth ceseased plants caused at 39 and 51 g/ha began to increase in between 25 and 30 days after application (DAA) and between 30 and 35 DAA, respectively. In untreated plant tuber carbohydrate rapidly decreased right after emergence and almost consumed within 40 days. There was no carbohydrate consumption during the period of growth cessation in bensulfuron-methyl-applied plant, but the content started to rapidly decrease with regrowth. Tuber viability lasted for 30 days in untreated plant, while tubers were viable for 60 and 70 days after application of bensulfuron-methyl at 39 and 51 g/ha, respectively. During the period of growth cessation the plants kept minimum respiration and photosynthesis, but with regrowth respiration and photosynthesis were resumed and rapidly increased.
Pot experiment in greenhouse was conducted to determine the effect of growth and anatomical characteristics of bensulfuron on the seedlings of rice and barnyardgrass. Formulated bensulfuron was soil applied at 102g ai/ha to rice and barnyardgrass grown under various cropping patterns at 5 days after seeding or transplanting. At 10 days after application, plants were harvested to examine growth and anatomical changes of rice and barnyardgrass. Bensulfuron did not affect the growth and development of rites under dry seeded condition and trnsplanting condition while inhibited severely those of rice under water-seeded condition compared with untreated control. Under water-seeded condition, root growth of rice was much more severely inhibited by bensulfuron than shoot growth. The herbicide retarded the growth of barnyardgrass under dry-seeded condition and more severely inhibited than that under water-seeded condition. Microscopically, the anatomical change induced by bensulfuron occurred only in barnyardgrass under dry-seeded condition, and involved constriction of leaf primordia within leaf sheaths, rupture of mesophyll cell, and irregular cell arrangement. These anatomical alterations differed from and were not associated with the differential growth response.
