  • The effects of partial substitution of fluorine on physical properties were studied in Ag-sheathes tapes of $Tl_{0.8}Pb_{0.2}Sr_{1.8}Ba_{0.2} Ca_{2.2}Cu_3O_yF_x (0{\leq}x{\leq}1)$ nominal compositions. The tapes were prepared using the powder-in-tube method incorporating an in-situ reaction method. $CuF_2$ was used as a source of F. It was found that F-doping in Tl-1223 system resulted in a decrease in formation temperatire of Tl-1223 phase. and thus significantly deteriorated their superconducting properties. Such disadvantages seem to originate by the fromation of non-beneficial phases such as SrF2 in the early stage of the powder preparation process.

  • An oil-free turbo-compressor supported by compliant foil bearings which remove oil-contamination by elimination of a conventional ball bearing and oil lubrication systems is presented. Turbo-compressor makes two individual air compressions with two impellers at a operating speed of 39,000 rpm. In this study, the rotordynamic effects caused by aerodynamic instability were investigated with variable mass flow rates. Correlations between frequencies of pressure fluctuation in two diffusers and those of excitation forces on rotor were clearly observed in an aerodynamic unsteady region. Thus, these results show that it is beneficial to design high-speed rotating turbomachinery by considering coupling effect between aerodynamic instability and rotordynamic force.

Methods: Fifty-six women over 65 yr-of-age (experimental group n=28, control group n=28) residing in Seoul or Gyung-gi province participated in the study, which used an unequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data collected from May, 2007 to May, 2008 was analyzed by SPSS Ver. 16. Results: Auricular acupressure was associated with better sleep state and self-reported satisfaction of sleep as compared with the control group. Conclusions: Aricular acupressure therapy can be beneficial in relief of insomnia in elderly women.

  • Effects of Ti on damping capacity and mechanical properties are investigated in hot rolled Fe-17%Mn alloy. The existing damping alloy with Fe-Mn binary system was limited the use by high production cost, however in case of using scrap iron instead of pure iron although the content of carbon is higher it is possible to be applied wider field especially construction items because the production cost is lower. However, the excellent specific damping capacity is dropped due to the high content of carbon, we developed advanced type of damping alloy included Ti. TiC is formed with added Ti and it holds the specific damping capacity similar to existing damping alloy. The effect of Ti on damping capacity is found to be beneficial in carbon-containing alloy, which is attributed to the depletion of carbon solute due to the formation of TiC.

  • The effects of aqueous extract of Artemisia iwayomogi (Compositae) (AIAE) on the mast cell-dependent allergic and inflammatory reactions were investigated. AIAE (0.05 to 1 g/kg) dose-dependently inhibited systemic allergic reaction induced by compound 48/80 in mice. AIAE (0.1 and 1 g/kg) also significantly inhibited local allergic reaction activated by anti-DNP IgE. AIAE (0.001 to 1 mg/ml) dose-dependently inhibited the histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells (RPMC) activated by compound 48/80. Moreover, AIAE inhibited the secretion of interleukin (IL)-6 in phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus calcium ionophore A23187-stimulated human mast cell line (HMC-1) cells. These results provide evidence that AIAE may be beneficial in the treatment of allergic diseases.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the health effects of the general components of acorns in animals. In Korea, acorns have been used as food material in the form of acorn starch. Acorns contain tannin, gallic acid, digallic acid, and gallotannin. Therefore, the health effects of acorns as functional food are actively being studied. The chemical composition of acorns may vary according to the harvest time, region, and breed. Acorns have excellent antioxidant properties and might be beneficial in controlling hyperlipidemia, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and dementia, as well as strengthening immune competence. Further study is necessary to better understand the benefits of acorns, as it is expected to represent a large part of the food industry.

  • Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading cause of death in many developed countries as well as developing countries. Many evidences indicate that natural products have profound beneficial effects for cardioprotection. In addition to the crude extracts, an identified single compound may be used as a lead molecule for the therapeutic interests. In this review, we discuss promising natural products for cardiovascular diseases, their molecular targets, and their mechanisms, which may help the further direction of studies and applications of natural products for cardiovascular diseases.

  • Ginseng is one of the most popular herbs throughout the world. Ginsenosides, the active constituent of ginseng, have been suggested to have diverse effects on cardiovascular, immune, mood and endocrine systems as well as cognitive performance. Many studies have revealed the beneficial effect of ginseng on cognition in normal human subjects and in animals. Recently, a few studies showing effects of ginseng on the patients with Alzheimer's disease have been reported. However, the underlying mechanism is not clear at this stage and it is still obscure whether ginseng is cognitive stimulant or disease modifying agent. More detailed studies exploring the relationship between clinical efficacy and pathophysiology are required.

  • The intestinal microbiota has increasingly been shown to have a vital role in various aspects of human health. Among the vast gut bacterial community, Bifidobacterium is a genus which dominates the intestine of healthy breast-fed infants whereas in adulthood the levels are lower but relatively stable. Evidence is increasingly accumulating which shows beneficial effects of supplementation with Bifidobacteria for the improvement of human health conditions ranging from protection against infection to various positive effects. However, Bifidobacterium has not been actively studied while consumption of probiotics has greatly been increased as functional foods in Korea. The aim of this article is to introduce various studies and excellent reviews on the role of Bifidobacteria for human health.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate initial effects of the non-elastic taping technique on grip strength and EMG in female with lateral epicondylalgia. METHODS: Twenty-two participants (mean age SD, $52.8{\pm}10.2$ years) with chronic lateral epicondylalgia (mean duration${\pm}$SD, $13.1{\pm}9.9$ months) participated in a placebo control study of an elbow taping technique. Outcome measures were pain-free grip and EMG taken before, immediately after application of tape. RESULTS: The experimental group were more significantly improved grip strength and muscle activity of forearm than control group. CONCLUSION: This study show that non-elastic taping technique is beneficial intervention for increase grip strength and EMG in female with lateral epicondylalgia.
