Recently, Concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) columns have proven an exceptional structural resistance in terms of strength, stiffness, and ductility. However, the resistance of these column members can be severely affected by the type of loading in which bending stresses increase in direct proportion with axial load and eccentricity value. This paper presents a non-linear finite element based modeling approach that studies the behavior of slender CFDST columns under biaxial loading. Finite element models were calibrated based on the outcomes of experimental work done by other researchers. Results from simulations of slender CFDST columns under axial loading eccentric in one direction showed good agreement with the experimental response. The calibrated models are expanded to a total of thirty models that studies the behavior of slender CFDST columns under combined compression and biaxial bending. The influences of parameters that are usually found in practice are taken into consideration in this paper, namely, eccentricity-to-diameter (e/D) ratios, slenderness ratios, diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratios, and steel contribution ratios. Finally, an analytical study based on current code provisions is conducted. It is concluded that South African national standards (2011) provided the most accurate results contrasted with the Eurocode 4 (2004) and American Institute of Steel Construction (2016) that are found to be conservative. Accordingly, correction factors are proposed to the current design guidelines to provide more satisfactory results.
Cold-formed steel truss system was reviewed in order to improve the various problems associated with the steel floor joist system, such as the structural deficiency caused by web punching and others. Two types of floor truss system using cold-formed steel were reviewed during this research project, including the square end type(SE type) and underslung type(EE type). The strctural behavior was analyzed using the AISI design criteria and various bending tests. Test results show that the SE type floor truss proved to be more efficient than the EE type when it is subjected to concentrated load, and that the unbraced length of the floor truss about the weak axis has much importance on the buckling strength of the floor truss. Test results indicate that their values surpass the calculated values predicated through the AISI design criteria.
As the jacks provide a thrust force on the inclined surface, bending deformations by a side force occur in the pedestal and rod parts. This can induce disorder or degradation of the thrust module, buckling stability on the inclined compression condition should be clarified to secure the reliability of shield TBM. For analyzing the stability, a buckling testing method for hydraulic cylinder was investigated and compression testing system was installed. Before the test, a numerical analysis was conducted to check the stress concentration parts. The maximum allowable force was loaded on the cylinder specimen at 0 degree surface condition as a preliminary test. After the test, plastic deformations or hydraulic leakage was not observed. The static stability of it was verified at 0 degree condition.
This work investigates the elastic buckling characteristics of laminated composite trapezoidal corrugated plates with simply supported edges using the analytical method. In the analysis, three types of in-plane loading conditions: uniaxial, biaxial and shear loads are considered. Because it is very difficult to determine the mechanical behavior of 3-dimensional corrugated structures analytically, the equivalent homogenization model is adapted to investigate the overall mechanical behavior of corrugated plates. The corrugated element is homogenized as an orthotropic material. The previous formulae for bending rigidities of corrugated plate are adapted in this paper. The comparisons of the proposed analytical results with those of FEA based on the shell element are made to verify the proposed analytical method. In the comparison study both the critical buckling loads and the buckling mode shapes are presented. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

This paper provides a comprehensive study of optimum design of a helicopter tailrotor driveshaft made of the flexible matrix composites (FMCs). Since the driveshaft transmits power while subjected to large bending deformation due to aerodynamic loadings, the FMCs can be ideal for enhancing the drivetrain performance by absorbing the lateral deformation without shaft segmentation. However, the increased lateral flexibility and high internal damping of the FMCs may induce whirling instability at supercritical operating conditions. Thus, the purpose of optimization in this paper is to find a set of tailored FMC parameters that compromise between the lateral flexibility and the whirling stability while satisfying several criteria such as torsional buckling safety and the maximum shaft temperature at steadystate conditions. At first, the drivetrain was modeled based on the finite element method and the classical laminate theory with complex modulus approach. Then, an objective function was defined as a combination of an allowable bending deformation and external damping and a genetic algorithm was applied to search for an optimum set with respect to ply angles and stack sequences. Results show that an optimum laminate consists of two groups of layers: (i) one has ply angles well below 45$^{\circ}$ and the other far above 45$^{\circ}$ and (ii) the number of layers with low ply angles is much bigger than that with high ply angles. It is also found that a thick FMC shaft is desirable for both lateral flexibility and whirling stability. The genetic algorithm was effective in converging to several local optimums, whose laminates exhibit similar patterns as mentioned above.

Corrugated steel plates have several advantages such as high resistance for shear without stiffeners, minimization of welding process, and high fatigue resistance. To take advantage of these benefits, several researchers have attempted to use corrugated steel plate as a web of I-girders. The lateral-torsional buckling is the major design aspect of such I-girders. However, lateral-torsional buckling of the I-girder with corrugated steel webs still needs to be investigated especially for a real loading condition such as non-uniform bending. This paper investigated the lateral-torsional buckling strength of the I-girder with corrugated steel webs under linear moment gradient by using finite element analysis. From the results, it was found that the buckling behavior of the I-girder with corrugated steel webs differed depending on the number of periods of the corrugation. Also, a simple equation for the moment gradient correction factor of the I-girder with corrugated steel webs was suggested. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling strength of the I-girder with corrugated steel webs was then discussed based on current design equations for ordinary I-girders and the results of finite element analysis.
This paper presents an analysis of the bending, buckling and free vibration of functionally graded sandwich beams resting on elastic foundation by using a refined quasi-3D theory in which both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects are included. The displacement field contains only three unknowns, which is less than the number of parameters of many other shear deformation theories. In order to homogenize the micromechanical properties of the FGM sandwich beam, the material properties are derived on the basis of several micromechanical models such as Tamura, Voigt, Reuss and many others. The principle of virtual works is used to obtain the equilibrium equations. The elastic foundation is modeled using the Pasternak mathematical model. The governing equations are obtained through the Hamilton's principle and then are solved via Navier solution for the simply supported beam. The accuracy of the proposed theory can be noticed by comparing it with other 3D solution available in the literature. A detailed parametric study is presented to show the influence of the micromechanical models on the general behavior of FG sandwich beams on elastic foundation.
The behavior of the connection for beam-to-column weak axis connection and its details should be identified. Thus, each element is considered a panel zone, and the horizontal stiffener's presence or absence and position in bracket-type welding connection are used as variables to compare the behavior of strong axis connection and weak axis connection. In this study, the strength of connection is calculated by substituting the simple beam-strengthened vertical stiffeners for connection in the presence of horizontal stiffeners. In the absence of horizontal stiffeners, the strength of connection can be calculated using local flange bending strength considering local web yielding strength, web crippling, and web buckling strength. The results of the theoretical analysis and experiments are compared.
In ship structures many of the structural plates have cutouts, for example, at inner bottom structure, girder, upper deck hatch, floor and dia-frame etc. In the case where a plate has a cutout it experiences reduced buckling and ultimate strength and at the same time the in-plane stress under compressive load produced by hull girder bending will be redistributed In general, actual ship structure adopted reinforcement of stiffener around the cutout in order to preventing from buckling so it need to examine a buckling and ultimate strength behaviour considering a cutout because In many ship yards used class rule for calculating buckling strength but it is difficult to evaluate perforate stiffened plate with random size. In the present paper, we investigated several kinds of perforated stiffened model from actual ship and then was performed finite element series analysis varying the cutout ratio, web height, thickness and type of cross-section using commercial FEA program(ANSYS) under compressive load.

In AASHTO LRFD (2007), a compact section is defined as a section in which no premature failure caused by local buckling of web and flange plate or later buckling occurs before the section reaches the plastic moment, Mp. The current AASHTO LRFD (2007) provides the compact section requirement by limiting the web slenderness only for webs without longitudinal stiffeners. The role of longitudinal stiffener is to increase the web buckling strength caused flexure. Although a web does not satisfy the compactness requirement without longitudinal stiffeners, the web buckling can be prevented by use of valid longitudinal stiffeners. Therefore, the web may be able to reach the plastic moment. However, the reason why a longitudinal stiffener may not be used to satisfy compactness requirement is not cleary explained in AASHTO LRFD (2007). In this study, the buckling and ultimate strength behaviors of stiffened webs subjected to bending are investigated through the linear buckling and nonlinear finite element analysis. It is found that steel plate girders having webs that do not satisfy the compactness requirement are able to reach the plastic moment if the longitudinal stiffeners have sufficient rigidities and are properly located. From a nonlinear regression analysis of the results, a new compactness requirement is suggested for webs stiffened with one longitudinal stiffener.
