  • To design ship channels is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. Bends in channels should be avoided if possible, but the channel should be widened, if channel bend is unavoidable, considering the swept path of a ship for safe passage. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to determine the channel widths in bends. The result of this study shows that the width of the bend may be designed as nearly same size of that in straight channel in case that the angle of deflection is less than 30 degrees, and that of the bend with 60 degrees deflection should be widened based on the length of the largest ship using the channel and the angle of deflection.

  • The characteristics of aging of near-equiatomic Ni-Ti alloy has been studied by the three point bend test and the measurement of Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC). The DSC is used to measure precise transformation temperatures and the amount of thermal energy required for the corresponding phase transformation. The effort of hardness on aging treatment in saline solution of $37^{\circ}C$ was higher for the annealed than solution treated specimens. As the testing temperature inc- rease from under $M_f$ to above $A_f$ temperature, the elastic stiffness increased. Almost full recovery can be achieved after bending below Belo outer fiber strain. Total bend recovery decreased gradually as aging time and bend angle is increased.

  • The pi-cell [1] is known as one of the candidates for a fast response time and a good viewing angle characteristics due to a self-compensated configuration and can be a replaceable mode instead of the current TN mode and the IPS mode for moving picture in future. This paper shows the optimized condition to maintain bend state instead of splay state, which is mortal demerit for good optical properties in a pi-cell, by using the polymer stabilized method [2]. The good electro-optical characteristics are also obtained by optimizing the various factors, which are monomer concentration in a LC, UV intensity, curing time, curing voltage, and curing temperature, and by using retardation film. We use a scanning electron microscope to study the structures of the polymer stabilized polymer network in a pi-cell as a key to figure out why bend state is occurred.

  • A liquid crystal device with switchable dynamic and memory modes was investigated and developed. The proposed device reveals the splay, $\pi$-twist, and bend states via selective switching among them. In the dynamic mode, the device is operated in the bend state, which exhibits a wide viewing-angle and a fast-response-time due to its self-compensated bend structure and flow-accelerated fast response time, respectively. In the memory mode, the permanent memory characteristics in the splay and $\pi$-twist sates are obtained, respectively. The switching mechanisms of the tristate device are also proposed.

  • The bending process of a press die is to bend a flat blank to the required angle. There are V-bending, U-bending, Z-bending, O-bending etc. for bending processing, and the basic principle of calculating the unfolding length of die processing is used as the neutral plane length. Since the constant of the length value of the neutral surface is different depending on the type of bending, it is impossible to accurately calculate it. In particular, Z-bending processing is performed twice, and it is set on the upper and lower surfaces of the blank, and bending processing occurs at the same time as the upward and downward bending, and the elongation of the material occurs and the material increases. It is not possible to check with the calculated value, and it occurs in many cases where the mold is modified after start-up. This study aims to minimize die modification by developing a formula to calculate the development length of Z-bend.

  • The flow characteristics in the shallow open channel bends are investigated, whose total angles were 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 in degree, and whose bed frictions were relatively rough(C=30) and smooth(C=60), respectively. The terms analyzed in this study are the water surface profile, the distribution of velocity and the flow direction, relating to the various total angles in the bends. The maximum depth in the bends could be found at the outside section of the location of $15^{\circ}$ local angle from the bend inlet, having no relation to the total angle and bed friction. It is supposed that the path of maximum velocities is especially influenced by the bottom friction when the total angles are bigger than 150 in degree, approximately. The ratio of the superelevation to the velocity head seems to increase as the total angle of the bends increases. The flow direction is skewed to the inner side at the bend inlet, and skewed to the outside at the bend outlet, regardless of their total angles.

  • In structural applications, brittle materials such as soda-lime glasses and ceramics are often subjected to multiaxial stress. Brittle materials with crack or damaged by foreign object impacts are abruptly fractured from cracks, because of their properities of very high strength and low fracture toughness. But in most cases, the residual strength has been derived from tests under uniaxial stress such as a 4-point bend test. The strengths under multiaxial stresses might be different from the strength. In comparable tests, the residual strength under biaxial stress state by the ball-on-ring test was greater than that under the uniaxial one by the 4-point bend test. In the case that crack having 90deg. to loading direction, the ratio of biaxial to uniaxial flexure strength was 1.12. At a different crack angle to loading direction when it was evaluated by the 4-point bend test, the residual strength was different and the ratio of 45deg. to 90deg. was 1.16.

  • To measure springback ratio of thin sheet or plate, winding bend rig is made. It bends a specimen with keeping its curva-ture constant and measure the bending angles before and after release of bending load. To check the performance of the bend rig, we calculated the bending moment by two ways which are based on simple beam theory. One is that the bending moment is calculated by using the results of bending test, and the other is that the moment is calculated by using the results of tensile tests. The former may entails the effect of the other is that the moment is calculated by using the results of tensile tests. The former may entails the effect of the friction between bending pin of the rig and surface of specimen, but the latter does not contain any effects of the friction since the bending moment is obtained by using tensile tests. Never-theless, the values of the two bending moments shows the same level of bending moment, which implies that the friction does not influence on the presence of friction within the scope of the test performed in this experiment. This phenomenon is explained theoretically by using moment equilibrium.

  • In the present study the characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flows in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$curved duct were investigated experimentally. A series of experiments for air flow were conducted to measure axial velocity profiles, secondary flow velocity profiles and pressure distributions. The measurements were made by a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) system with a data acquisition and processing system which includes Rotating Machinery Resolve (RMR) and PHASE software. The results from the experiment are summarized as follows. (1) The maximum velocity moved toward the outer wall from the region of a bend angle of $30^{\circ}$. The velocity distribution had a positive value extended over the total phase in the region of a bend angle of $150^{\circ}$. (2) Secondary flows were generally proportional to the velocity of the main flow. The intensity of the secondary flow was about 25% as much as that in the axial direction. (3) Pressure distributions were effects of the oscillatory Dean number and respective region.
