Cacao bean husk: an applicable bedding material in dairy free-stall barns

  • Objective: The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of cacao bean husk as bedding material in free-stall barn on the behavior, productivity, and udder health of dairy cattle, and on the ammonia concentrations in the barn. Methods: Four different stall surfaces (no bedding, cacao bean husk, sawdust, and chopped wheat straw) were each continuously tested for a period of 1 week to determine their effects on nine lactating Holstein cows housed in the free-stall barn with rubber matting. The lying time and the milk yield were measured between d 4 and d 7. Blood samples for plasma cortisol concentration and teat swabs for bacterial counts were obtained prior to morning milking on d 7. The time-averaged gas-phase ammonia concentrations in the barn were measured between d 2 and d 7. Results: The cows spent approximately 2 h more per day lying in the stalls when bedding was available than without bedding. The milk yield increased in the experimental periods when cows had access to bedding materials as compared to the period without bedding. The lying time was positively correlated with the milk yield. Bacterial counts on the teat ends recorded for cows housed on cacao bean husk were significantly lower than those recorded for cows housed without bedding. Ammonia concentration under cacao bean husk bedding decreased by 6%, 15%, and 21% as compared to no bedding, sawdust, and chopped wheat straw, respectively. The cortisol concentration was lowest in the period when cacao bean husk bedding was used. We observed a positive correlation between the ammonia concentrations in the barn and the plasma cortisol concentrations. Conclusion: Cacao bean husk is a potential alternative of conventional bedding material, such as sawdust or chopped wheat straw, with beneficial effects on udder health and ammonia concentrations in the barns.

  • The engineering properties of some Gyeongsang sedimentary rocks with respect to the grain size and the orientation of bedding planes were studied. The suitability of the rocks for civil and architectural construction was also investigated. The porosity of the rocks increases in proportion to the grain size. The ratio of the strain due to stress perpendicular to the bedding planes to the strain resulting from stress parallel to the bedding planes increases as the grain size decreases. The study indicates however, that the ratio of Young's modulus due to stress perpendicular to the bedding planes to Young's modulus resulting from stress parallel to the bedding planes increases in proportion to the grain size. The compressive strength of the sandstones studied is much greater than the strength of the conglomerate or shale. Only the coarse grained sandstone can be used for civil and architectural construction, regardless of the orientation of bedding planes. The relationships between compressive strength and density, elasticity and porosity, and compressive strength and mineral content were also studied.

역해석을 통한 퇴적암 절취비탈면 불연속면(층리)의 전단강도 추정 (Estimation of Shear Strength of Discontinuous (bedding) Cut Sedimentary Rock Slope by Using Back Analysis)

  • 본 연구에서는 경상분지 퇴적암지대 특히 양산단층대(일광동래단층대) 구간 퇴적암 비탈면에서 도로 시공 시 불연속면(층리)에서 발생된 파괴사례를 분석하였다. 이 지역의 경우 다른 지역에 비해 시공 중 비탈면파괴 사례가 유독 많이 발생된 지역이다. 노출된 파괴 비탈면에 대한 Face Mapping 작성 후 한계평형법에 의한 역해석을 통해 불연속면(층리)의 전단강도 파라미터를 산정하였다. 분석 결과 이 지역 불연속면(층리면) 비탈면 경우 기존 설계 전단강도 파라미터 값 및 문헌제시 값과 비교했을 때 상당히 작게 산정되는 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 층리면에 존재하는 잔존물과 지하수의 유출 등에 의한 영향으로 볼 수 있는데, 특히 점토와 같은 풍화잔존물이 불연속면의 전단강도에 감소에 영향을 미친 것으로 판단된다. 그리고 마찰각은 층리면각과 서로 비례하는 경향을 보여 두 변수사이에 관계식을 제시하였다. 이 식을 이용하여 노출된 층리면각을 알면 쉽게 전단강도 마찰각을 손쉽게 산정할 수 있다.

힐링 개념을 적용한 천연염색의 침구류 디자인개발 연구 (Development of Naturally Dyed Bedding Design Applying a Healing Concept)

  • Today, modern people are exposed to various environmental pollutants such as harmful substances and stress, which can compromise health. Therefore, a healing culture that seeks to enjoy human life based on the healing of body and mind is attracting great attention. The purpose of this study is to develop environmentally friendly natural dyeing considering a healing concept with four elements: color, dye, material, and pattern. The research methods and scope are based on a theoretical review of healing and research on the literature of bedding related to natural dyes, national and international books, the Internet, etc., and naturally dyed bedding. This paper presents actual production research. The results of this study are as follows. First, the elements of color, dyeing, material and pattern were developed through the process of a bedding design development model that applies a healing concept and can be commercialized as a healing bedding product. Second, a healing color proposal was expressed in an intermediate color system of pink, ocher, lavender, and indigo colors for emotional stability, warmth, calmness, comfort and softness. Third, eco-friendly bedding using natural dyes with medicinal efficacy can obtain the healing effect of the natural treatment method, which can aid healthy sleep. Fourth, the pattern used in the bedclothes was a motif of Sarasa embroidery, flower embroidery, ribbon embroidery, and wave quilting motifs to provide psychological stability as a healing concept in the sleeping environment. The natural healing bedding with the healing concept proposed in this study has natural treatment that is beneficial to human health and the development of bedding with natural dyes will lead to an increase of demand for the sleeping environment.

알러지 인식과 알러지 방지 침구 구매행동 (Allergy Recognition and Purchase Behavior for Anti-allergy Bedding Products)

  • Collection of data for this study was conducted by 271 questionnaire responded by the consumers of purchasing anti-allergy bedding products, and analysed statistically using SPSS. Research results through the questionnaire, it was determined to be the cause of allergic disease consumers most house dust mites. Recognition and recognition of house dust mite habitat, bedding called the most recognized. The anti-allergic bedding purchase motives and intelligence recommendations salesman recommendations and store display products that have the greatest impact. Highly educated respondents were more important role in the salesperson's recommendations and famous brand awareness to purchase. Higher income level of the respondents buy anti-allergic bedding for allergy symptoms allergy preventive and mitigation efforts. Quality ratings sewing, color, laundry management was more important in women than in men. The ages 20 to 30 showed that respondents think that more important than plush and brand. More than 40, laundry convenience is more important. Sewing and laundry management respondents of high school or less. Properties for the anti-allergic bedding satisfaction in women than in men, laundry, storage convenience, to prevent dust skimp on the effects of satisfaction was convenient. 30-40s for light weight than satisfaction, high durability and anti-allergic effect on satisfaction was higher than 20 respondents more than 50 respondents. Than 20 respondents more than 40 respondents also appeared to be more about the durability that meets. Anti-allergic bedding was soft to the touch, warmth, dust Blow out prevention effects, anti-allergic performance satisfaction of the properties has a positive effect on repurchase intent. It were also identified as important anti-allergic bedding inclined to the performance of a soft feel and anti-allergic recommended.

Experimental study on the mechanical property of coal and its application

  • Brazilian splitting tests, uniaxial compression tests and triaxial compression tests are carried out on the coal samples cored from Shanxi group $II_1$ coal seam of Jiaozuo coal mine, Henan province, China, to obtain their property parameters. Considering the bedding has notable effect on the property parameter of coal, the samples with different bedding angles are prepared. The effects of bedding on the anisotropic characteristics of the coal seam are investigated. A geological geomechanical model is built based on the geology characteristics of the Jiaozuo coal mine target reservoir to study the effects of bedding on the fracture propagations during hydraulic fracturing. The effects of injection pressure, well completion method, in-situ stress difference coefficient, and fracturing fluid displacement on the fracture propagations are investigated. Results show bedding has notable effects on the property parameters of coal, which is the key factor affecting the anisotropy of coal. The hydraulic cracks trends to bifurcate and swerve at the bedding due to its low strength. Induced fractures are produced easily at the locations around the bedding. The bedding is beneficial to form a complicated fracture network. Experimental and numerical simulations can help to understand the effects of bedding on hydraulic fracturing in coalbed methane reservoirs.

Effects of driving style and bedding in pigs transported to slaughterhouse in different temperatures

  • Animal welfare during transport became an largely issue because of increasing demand for improved animal welfare standards. Most studies on the animal welfare during transportation have concentrated on the atmosphere and the temperature of the truck compartments. Thus, the objective of study was to collect and quantify three axis acceleration and determine the effect of bedding for transporting pigs from farm to slaughterhouse. A total of 2,840 crossbred fattening pigs with a live weight of approximately 115 kg were used. They were raised in the same commercial farms and transported to the same commercial slaughterhouse. A 3×2×2 completely randomized factorial design was used to investigate effects of rubber type bedding (bedding or non-bedding) and two levels of driving style (aggressive or normal) in three different time periods with different outside temperatures. Air temperature treatments were as follow: high temperature ([HT] higher than 24℃); low temperature ([LT] lower than 10℃); normal temperature ([NT] 10℃ to 24℃). In our experiment, pigs transported under aggressive driving style showed lower (p < 0.05) pH and water holding capacity (WHC) than those transported under normal driving style. Pigs transported under normal driving style showed a lower percentage of drip loss (DL) (p < 0.05) than those transported with an aggressive driving style. Also, transported with bedding showed higher (p < 0.05) lying behavior but lower (p < 0.05) sitting behavior than those transported without bedding. Pigs transported under normal driving style showed lower (p < 0.05) cortisol level than those transported under aggressive driving style. In conclusion, aggressive driving style cause acute stress in pigs, while bedding helps alleviate acute stress in pigs during transportation in LT.

침구점포 경영에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구 (A study on management performance factors of bedding stores)

  • 침구점포 경영성과 요인을 발굴하여 향후 침구점포 예비창업자와 침구회사의 신규점포상담, 개설시 통계적으로 유용한 자료로 사용함으로서 기존보다 정확하게 경영성과를 예측하는 도구와 기준을 제시하고자 한다. 첫째, 경영성과에 가장 큰 영향을 주는 요인으로는 입지 및 상권으로 분석되었다. 둘째, 침구점포의 경영성과 요인의 중요도는 입지, 소비자, 경쟁 순으로 나타났다. 셋째, 입지요인에서는 '침구점포 주변은 유동인구 다(多), 소비자요인에서는 거주 인구수 다(多), 경재요인에서는 상품 품질 우수가 가장 중요한 변수로 나타났다.

EPS베딩재가 지중매설관의 토압에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Bedding Conditions on Earth Pressure Distribution of Embedded Pipes)

  • 베딩조건에 따라 강성재질의 지중매설관 주변에 작용하는 토압분포와 크기를 조사하기 위하여 초경량재료인 EPS블록을 매설관의 상부 또는 하부에 여러 가지 조건으로 설치한 다음 주문진 표준사로 복토하여 토압과 침하량을 측정하는 원형의 대형토조시험을 실시하였다. 실험결과 EPS 베딩재를 설치하지 않은 경우 매설관 바닥에서 측정된 토압은 $4.96_{tf/m^2}$ 으로 나타났으며 베딩재를 설치하는 경우 바닥에서 측정된 토압은 조건에 따라 $1.87{\sim}4.96_{tf/m^2}$으로 베딩재를 설치하지 않은 경우에 비하여 12~62% 가량 토압이 경감되는 것으로 나타났으며, 베딩재의 위치에 대한 매개변수적인 실험결과 베딩재를 하부-상부-상하부에 설치하는 순으로 경감효과가 크며 EPS 베딩재를 하부보다는 상부에 설치하는 경우 경감효과가 두드러지는 것으로 나타났다.

Characteristics of Sawdust and Cocopeat Beddings, and Their Usefulness According to the Fan and Pen Location for Rearing Hanwoo Cattle

  • This study was designed to examine the characteristics of sawdust and cocopeat bedding materials, including physicochemical properties (Exp. I) and on-farm trial (Exp. II). In Exp. I, the proportion of particle size was in the order of sawdust>cocopeat India>cocopeat Vietnam (p<0.05), and cocopeat contained higher proportion of small particles ($250{\mu}m$+below $250{\mu}m$) than sawdust, causing a dust production problem. Bulk density was cocopeat India>cocopeat Vietnam>sawdust (p<0.05), thus cocopeat treatments showed 4.4 times higher bedding cost than sawdust. The water absorption rates were 702.0% in cocopeat India, 678.3% in cocopeat Vietnam, and 444.0% in sawdust, showing cocopeat had approximately 1.5 times higher water absorption rate than sawdust. Moisture evaporation rates after 12 h of air blowing (2.00 m/s) were higher (p<0.05) in cocopeat Vietnam (80.4%) than sawdust (71.2%) and cocopeat India (72.8%). In vitro ammonia emissions were higher (p<0.05) in sawdust ($2.71mg/m^2/h$) than cocopeat India ($1.59mg/m^2/h$) and Vietnam ($1.22mg/m^2/h$), and total ammonia emissions were higher (p<0.05) in sawdust ($37.02mg/m^2$) than cocopeat India ($22.51mg/m^2$) and Vietnam ($13.60mg/m^2$). In Exp. II, an on-farm trial was conducted with 48 Hanwoo cattle in 16 pens using the same bedding materials as in Exp. I, with fan (blowing 2.00 m/s) and no fan treatments, and feed bunk side (FB) and water supply side (WS) within a pen (4.5 m, $width{\times}9.0m$, length). Beddings were replaced with fresh bedding materials when moisture concentrations were over 65%. No interactions among treatments were detected for moisture concentration and increment rates, and ammonia concentrations, but a significant effect was observed (p<0.01) for each of the treatments. Both concentrations and increment rate of moisture were higher (p<0.01) in the beddings without fan than with fan. Moisture concentrations and increment rate within a pen were also higher (p<0.01) in FB than WS. Thus, the whole no-fan-FB and sawdust-fan-FB were replaced with fresh bedding material between 4 to 5 experimental weeks. The ammonia concentrations and pH of beddings were not significantly different among treatments. Therefore, using cocopeat bedding with a blowing fan can extend twice the bedding utilization period, and WS within a pen showed twice the bedding-life compared to FB. Despite the outstanding characteristics of cocopeat compared with sawdust, using cocopeat as an alternative for sawdust bedding is not recommended for cattle management, considering it has 4.4 times higher bedding cost and a dust production problem.
