  • The objective of this study is to get the basic data for the development of fluidized bed combustor. For this purpose, various rake angles(.theta.=20.deg., 25.deg., 30.deg., 35.deg.) of finned tubes and a smooth tube were installed horizontally in the fluidized bed combustor of 410*250mm. The effect of fluidized bed temperature, superficial velocity in bed, size of bed materials, rake angle of finned tubes on the heat transfer coefficient was experimentally investigated. The following results were obtained. (1) Under the fluidized bed temperature(750.deg. C-900.deg. C), and the gas velocity in bed(1.1-2.8m/sec), The highest heat transfer coefficient was measured with the rake angle of finned tubes was .theta.=25.deg. and .theta.=35.deg. for the average fluidized material particle size of 1.22mm and 1.54mm, respectively. Generally, the heat transfer coefficient of finned tubes is 1.4 to 2.4 times larger than that of smooth tubes. (2) The size of bed materials influences the rake angle of finned tubes which can have the highest heat transfer coefficient. As the temperature in bed gets higher, the effect of the rake angle of finned tubes on the heat transfer coefficient becomes greater.

  • To propose the design technique and the execution manual of the LWFS(Lightweight Foamed Soil) method using dredged soil, the operation system for the test-bed integrated management, and to establish an amendment for the domestic quantity per unit and specifications, and a strategy for its internationalization. In order to utilize the dredged soil from the coastal area as a construction material, we constructed the embankment with LWFS on soft ground and monitored its behavior. As a result, it can be expected that the use of LWFS as an embankment material on the soft ground can improve the economic efficiency by reducing the depth and period of soil improvement as well as the uses of nearby dredged soil. To verify the utilization of the dredged soil as a material for light-weighted roadbed, soft ground and foundation ground, and surface processing, perform an experimental construction for practical structures and analyze the behavior. It is expected to be able to improve the soft ground with dredged soil and develop technique codes and manuals of the dredged soil reclamation by constructing a test-bed in the same size of the fields, and establish the criteria and manual of effective dredged soil reclamation for practical use. The application technology of the dredged soil reclamation during harbor constructions and dredged soil reclamation constructions can be reflected during the working design stage. By using the materials immediately that occur from the reclamation during harbor and background land developments, the development time will decrease and an increase of economic feasibility will happen. It is expected to be able to apply the improved soil at dredged soil reclamation, harbor and shore protection construction, dredged soil purification projects etc. Future-work for develop the design criteria and guideline for the technology of field application of dredged soil reclamation is that review the proposed test-bed sites, consult with the institutions relevant with the test-bed, establish the space planning of the test-bed, licensing from the institutions relevant with the test-bed, select a test-bed for the dredged soil disposal area.

  • Machine tools are the cores of industrial development in recent period. It is difficult to develop a system which can do cutting and grinding process in the one system. Hybrid Vertical Grinding System is capable of processing in a single apparatus cutting or grinding. The modal analysis and structural analysis for the development of Hybrid Vertical Grinding System is the first time of domestic work. In this study, Hybrid Vertical Grinding System bed was designed and analyzed by using SS401 and FC300 as materials. And by using Finite Element Methods, the design and material of the bed was analysed. Finally, we can make a better choice of structure and material of the bed by comparing the analysis results.

  • It is to use effectively for stream channel and watershed management as the prediction and the analysis of bed changes characteristics in the Seomjin river downstream. The necessary data (section, bed composition material, pivot point water elevation, coefficient of roughness) with regard to analysis of the bed changes characteristics were based upon the survey data and analysis results in the Seomjin river maintenance basic plan. The prediction of bed changes was also completed with HEC-6 model. The study results were summarized as follows: The main factor of bed changes in the Seomjin river downstream can be decided by extreme extraction of bed aggregate rather than the change of hydrological data. According to the analysis of bed stability based on the relation between friction velocity and representative grain size, and the relation between dimensionless tractive force and representative grain size, the Seomjin river downstream appears to be increased overall. The bed composition material in the stream channel of the Seomjin river of 2003 year shows higher composition rate of gravel and lower composition rate of sand as compared to those of 1989 year. According to result that the prediction of bed changes, it is estimated that the bed will be risen approximately 1.5 m to the place up to 9 km from the estuary, have been repetitively risen and fallen up to 1 m to the place between $9{\sim}21\;km$ section, and fallen about 0.5m to the place between $22{\sim}25\;km$ section. As a result, the bed of the Seomjin river downstream can be decided to be risen gradually. However, since the prediction of this study is based on the assumption that there will be no forced aggregate picking, the bed changes can be much greater than expected when there is a massive aggregate picking as it had happened before.

  • Objective: Resting comfort may influence sleep-related lying postures in cattle. This study aimed to investigate the effects of bed cleanliness on tucked (TSP) and extended (ESP) head positions in sleep-related lying postures. Methods: The study was conducted over two experimental periods. In each period, four Japanese Black fattening cattle were assigned to the cleaning treatment (CL), in which bedding material was replaced once during each experimental period. Four cattle were assigned to the control treatment (CON) with no bed cleaning. Daily duration, bout frequency, and bout length of sleep-related lying postures were measured, and bed moisture, ammonia concentration in the air, plasma cortisol, and serotonin concentration were also measured within one week before and after cleaning treatment in each period. Results: The bed moisture and ammonia concentrations decreased in CL after bed cleaning. Following bed cleaning, the duration and bout frequency of TSP in CL decreased compared to that observed in CON, whereas ESP in CL increased after bed cleaning. Total duration of sleep-related lying postures and cortisol and serotonin levels did not differ between CL and CON. Conclusion: These results suggest that cattle in sleep-related lying postures shifted from tucked head positions to extended head positions in response to improved bed cleanliness.

  • The properties of pyrolytic carbon (PyC) deposited from $C_2H_2$ and a mixture of $C_2H_2/C_3H_6$ on $ZrO_2$ particles in a fluidized bed reactor were studied by adjusting the deposition temperature, reactant concentration, and the total gas flow rate. The effect of the deposition parameters on the properties of PyC was investigated by analyzing the microstructure and density change. The density could be varied from $1.0\;g/cm^3$ to $2.2\;g/cm^3$ by controlling the deposition parameters. The density decreased and the deposition rate increased as the deposition temperature and reactant concentration increased. The PyC density was largely dependent on the deposition rate irrespective of the type of the reactant gas used.

  • This study deals with the removal of mercury species using a packed-bed column with spherical aminated chitosan material. These adsorbents revealed a high adsorption capacity for mercury species. Experiments with feed solutions of 10 ppm Hg dissolved in distilled water showed an excellent removal with a sharp increase of the filter effluent concentration after a total throughput of 900 bed volumes of feed water. Up to $95\%$ desorption was reached by using 3 bed volumes of 0.01 N EDTA solution. EDTA could be recovered by means of sulfuric acid with about $75\%$ efficiency. Almost the same results were obtained in repeated sorption and desorption experiments at identical conditions. The experiments demonstrated that the sorbents possessed practically no sorption capacity for alkaline earth ions ($Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$). Their influence on the sorption of mercury was negligible. In experiments with spiked tap water of the Karlsruhe Research Centre and a feed mercury concentration of 0.01 mg/l, the breakthrough of Hg was observed only after a total throughput of about 6,000 bed volumes of feed water.

  • A computer model was proposed to simulate channel changes and bed material sorting of the meandering channels with different grain size in time and space simultaneously. The bed at the outside of the meandering channel with mixed sediments was scoured deeply and composed of coarser materials, and at the inside was aggradated and composed of finer materials. The sorting process started at the upstream inflection point and was finished at the downstream inflection point. At the natural with complicated boundaries and non-uniform grain sizes, the bed near the outside at the bend and narrow width was scoured deeper with coarse materials than in the channel with uniform grain sizes. The point bars showed lip at the inside near the bend and the bed materials were finer The bed at the outside near the bend and in the narrow width was scoured deeply with the coarser materials.

  • When the pier is constructed in the cohesive be, the accuracy maynot be obtained because the equation for calculating the scour at piers is based upon the results which are analyzed through the experiments in the non-cohesive bed. In this paper, the variation of the depth of the pier scour occurred by constructing 5 types of pier in the channel having the cohesive material is examined. The experimental results are analyzed based upon Froude numbers and non-dimensional numbers which are indicated as the flow depths compared to the pier width. The results are also compared with the results obtained using the existing pier scour equations. In this paper, the shape factors, which can be used for calculating the scour depth of the pier in the cohesive channel bed, are suggested. The shape factors are indicated through the ratios between the scour depth at the circular pier and the scour depths at the different types of pier, and are suggested as two stages. In the first stage, in which the water depth compared to the pier width is less than 1.2, the shape factors are given as the equations. However, in the second stage the shape factors are given as the constant values. It is understood that the shape factors suggested in this paper can be properly usd for calculating local scour at piers in the bridges which are constructed in the cohesive channel bed having the characteristics of the bed material which is used in these experiments. Keywords : local scour, maximum scour depth, cohesive bed material, pier shape, pier, shape factor.
