  • A 2U cube satellite called SNUGLITE has been developed by GNSS Research Laboratory in Seoul National University. Its main mission is to perform actual operation by mounting dual-frequency global positioning system (GPS) receivers. Its scientific mission aims to observe space environments and collect data. It is essential for a cube satellite to control an Earth-oriented attitude for reliable and successful data transmission and reception. To this end, an attitude estimation and control algorithm, Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), has been implemented in the on-board computer (OBC) processor in real time. In this paper, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) was employed as the attitude estimation algorithm. For the attitude control technique, the Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) was utilized. The algorithm was verified through the processor in the loop simulation (PILS) procedure. To validate the ADCS algorithm in the ground, the experimental verification via a single axis Hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) was used due to the simplicity and cost effectiveness, rather than using the 3-axis HILS verification (Schwartz et al. 2003) with complex air-bearing mechanism design and high cost.

  • Estimation of postmortem interval (PMI) is a key issue in the field of forensic pathology. With the availability of quantitative analysis of RNA levels in postmortem tissues, several studies have assessed the postmortem degradation of constitutively expressed RNA species to estimate PMI. However, conventional RNA quantification as well as biochemical and physiological changes employed thus far have limitations related to standardization or normalization. The present study focuses on an interesting feature of the subdomains of certain RNA species, in which they are site-specifically cleaved during apoptotic cell death. We found that the D8 divergent domain of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) bearing cell death-related cleavage sites was rapidly removed during postmortem RNA degradation. In contrast to the fragile domain, the 5' terminal region of 28S rRNA was remarkably stable during the postmortem period. Importantly, the differences in the degradation rates between the two domains in mammalian 28S rRNA were highly proportional to increasing PMI with a significant linear correlation observed in mice as well as human autopsy tissues. In conclusion, we demonstrate that comparison of the degradation rates between domains of a single RNA species provides quantitative information on postmortem degradation states, which can be applied for the estimation of PMI.

  • When industrial structures are constructed on soft ground, ground subsidence is occurred by problems of bearing capacity. To protect ground subsidence have to improve soft ground, and have to predict settlement estimation for reasonable construction. Artificial Neural Networks(ANN) is adopted for prediction of settlement of construction during the initial design. In the study, Artificial Neural Networks are applied to predict the settlement estimation of initial condition ground and ground improved by D.C.M method. Also, this study compares results of Artificial Neural Networks and results of continuum analysis using Mohr-Coulomb models. In result, settlements of initial condition ground decreased over 0.7 times. Also, by comparing ANN and continuum analysis, coefficient of determination was comparatively high value 0.79. Thought this study, it was confirmed that settlements of improvement ground is predicted using laboratory experiment data.

  • This study was performed to develop accelerated life test method of the wind-turbine gearbox using accumulated damage theory that used to model the fatigue of parts that receive variable load. The accumulated damage theory was introduced, and the estimation of life and calculation of accelerated life test time was illustrated. As the actual application example, accelerated life test method of the gearbox was described. Life distribution of the wind-turbine gearbox was supposed to follow Weibull distribution and life test time was calculated under the conditions of average life (MTBF) 140,600 hours and 99% reliability for one test sample According to the accumulated damage theory, because test time can shorten in case increase test load, test time could be reduced by 1.2 years when we put the load 1.2 times of rated load than 0.93 times of rated load that is equivalent load calculated by load spectrum of the wind turbine. This time, acceleration coefficient was 21.3. This accelerated test method was used to develop accelerated test method of gear reducer, gear and bearing as well as the industrial gearbox and it is considered to be applied comprehensively to mechanical parts the fatigue of which is happened by load or pressure etc.

  • The field plate test has a good potential for determining since it measures both plate pressure and settlement. The deformation modulus of rock mass is differently measured for status of structures. The values of deformation modulus are obtained from laboratory test (uniaxial and triaxial test) and field test (pressuremeter test). Plate load test should be conducted by different loading plate sizes for geological structure of rock mass and scale of structures. In this paper, large plate load tests were performed to predict of structure's behavior and evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity of the foundation on soft rock. Simultaneously, deformation modulus of rock mass was estimated by back analysis of stresses measured in field test under rock mass. Finally, we verified the validation of deformation modulus of rock mass through result of large plate load test and numerical simulation.

  • Load bearing structural members in a wide variety of applications accumulate damage over their service life. From a standpoint of both safety and performance, it is desirable to monitor the occurrence, location, and extent of such damage. Structures require complicated element models with a number of degrees of freedom in structural analysis. During experiment much effort and cost is needed for measuring structural parameters. The sparseness and errors of measured data have to be considered during the parameter estimation Of Structures. In this paper we introduces damage identification algorithm by a system identification(S.I) using static and dynamic response. To study the behaviour of the estimators in noisy environment Using Monte Carlo simulation and a data measured perturbation scheme is adopted to investigate the influence of measurement errors on identification results. The assessment result by static and dynamic response were compared, and the efficiency and applicabilities of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through simulated static and dynamic responses of a truss bridge. The assessment results by each method were compared and we could observe that the 5.1 method is superior to the other conventional methods.

  • The use of post-compressed plates (PCP) to strengthen preloaded reinforced concrete (RC) columns is an innovative approach for alleviating the effects of stress-lagging between the original column and the additional steel plates. Experimental and theoretical studies on PCP-strengthened RC columns have been presented in our companion papers. The results have demonstrated the effectiveness of this technique for improving the strength, deformability and ductility of preloaded RC columns when subjected to axial or eccentric compression loading. An original and comprehensive design procedure is presented in this paper to aid engineers in designing this new type of PCP-strengthened RC column and to ensure proper strengthening details for desirable performance. The proposed design procedure consists of five parts: (1) the estimation of the ultimate load capacity of the strengthened column, (2) the design of the initial pre-camber displacement of the steel plate, (3) the design of the vertical spacing of the bolts, (4) the design of the bearing ends of the steel plates, and (5) the calculation of the tightening force of the bolts. A worked example of the design of a PCP-strengthened RC column is shown to demonstrate the application of the proposed design procedure.

  • There has been an increasing demand for introducing a base isolation system to secure the seismic safety of a nuclear power plant. However, the design criteria and the safety assessment methodology of a base isolated nuclear facility are still being developed. A performance based design concept for the base isolation system needs to be added to the general seismic design procedures. For the base isolation system, the displacement responses of isolators excited by the extended design basis earthquake are important as well as the design displacement. The possible displacement response by the extended design basis earthquake should be limited less than the failure displacement of the isolator. The failure of isolators were investigated by an experimental test to define the ultimate strain level of rubber bearings. The uncertainty analysis, considering the variations of the mechanical properties of isolators and input ground motions, was performed to estimate the probabilistic distribution of the isolator displacement. The relationship of the displacement response by each ground motion level was compared in view of a period elongation and a reduction of damping. Finally, several examples of isolator parameters are calculated and the considerations for an acceptable isolation design is discussed.

  • In order to construct extremely large scale of sea dike like Saemanguem dike, extremely large amount of mass of rock are needed. In this case, it is general methods to estimate required amount of rock mass based on characteristics of consolidation settlement and bearing capacity of seabed, because it is impossible to estimate exact amount of rock material based on varied seabed condition.. Even in this general methods, it is very few case to manage rock mass amount by estimation of actual input rock mass but the main point is focused on the final section formation considering of designed section and reserve embankment, so excessive or underestimating result of rock mass would be occurred surely. This general methods is not resonable in the points of economic and stable. In this study, optimum construction management method of rubble mound in the 3rd section construction of Saemanguem sea dike is suggested based on comparing required rock mass estimating from consolidation settlement theory with actual input rock mass. It is found out that the optimum input quantity of rock mass is about $1,900{\sim}2,000m^3$/day.

  • As the recent economic downturn continues to undermine the profits of construction industry in Korea, it has become ever more pressing to improve productivity of the industry. Since construction site management manpower staffing plan has close bearing on the productivity of construction projects, it is essential to estimate and mobilize adequate number of resources as per conditions and characteristics of each construction site. However, there are no reference approaches in practice to provide baseline for site management manpower staffing plan or estimation of manpower requirement. Therefore, this study aims to examine factors affecting productivity that warrants first and foremost consideration in development of site management manpower staffing plan during the initial phase of building construction project by conducting survey on industry stakehoders with hands-on responsibilities in construction sites and analyzing their responses. Conclusions herein will provide basic inputs for subsequent studies on development of site management manpower staffing plan as per project characteristics.
