  • Current design of pile group is based on the estimation of the overall bearing capacity of a pile group from that of a single pile using a group efficiency. However, the behaviors of a pile group are influenced by various factors such as method of pile installation, pile-soil-pile interaction, cap-soil-pile interaction, etc. Thus it is practically impossible to take into account these factors reasonably with the only group efficiency, In this paper, a new method for the design of pile groups is proposed, where the significant factors affecting the behavior of a pile group are considered separately by adopting several efficiencies. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the load transfer characteristics of piles and the difference of pile behaviors with respect to the pile locations in group can be taken into account. The efficiencies for the method are determined using the settlement failure criterion, which is consistent with the concept of allowable settlement for structures. The efficiencies calculated from the results of existing model tests are presented, and the bearing capacity of a pile group in the other model test is calculated and compared with that from the test result, to verify the validity of the proposed method.

  • FPS(friction pendulum system) is an isolation system which is possible to isolate structures from earthquake by pendulum characteristic. Natural frequencies of the structures could be determined by designing the radius of curvature of FPS. Thus, response vibration could be reduced by changing natural frequency of structures from FPS. But effective periods of recorded seismic wave were various and estimation of earthquake characteristic could be difficult. If effective periods of seismic wave correspond to natural frequency of structures with FPS, resonance can be occurred. Therefore, CFPBS(cone-type friction pendulum bearing system) was developed for controlling the acceleration and displacement of structure by the slope of friction surfaces. Structural natural frequency with CFPBS can be changed according to position of ball on the friction surface which was designed cone-type. Therefore, superstructures on CFPBS could be isolated from earthquake. In this study, seismic performance of CFPBS was evaluated by numerical analysis and shaking table test.

  • Diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams (DRCBs) have been widely adopted in reinforced concrete (RC) bearing wall systems. DRCBs are known to act as a fuse element dissipating most of seismic energies imparted to the bearing wall systems during earthquakes. Despite such importance of DRCBs, the damage estimation of such components and the corresponding consequences within the knowledge of performance based seismic design framework is not well understood. In this paper, drift-based fragility functions are developed for in-plane loaded DRCBs. Fragility functions are developed to predict the damage and to decide the repair method required for DRCBs subjected to earthquake loading. Thirty-seven experimental results are collected from seventeen published literatures for this effort. Drift-based fragility functions are developed for four damage states of DRCBs subjected to cyclic and monotonic loading associated with minor cracking, severe cracking, onset of strength loss, and significant strength loss. Damage states are defined in a consistent manner. Cumulative distribution functions are fit to the empirical data and evaluated using standard statistical methods.

  • In this research, an efficient mixed mode I/II fracture criterion is developed for fracture investigation of orthotropic materials wherein crack is placed along the fibers. This criterion is developed based on extension of well-known Maximum Tensile Stress (MTS) criterion in conjunction with a novel material model titled as Equivalent Reinforced Isotropic Model (ERIM). In this model, orthotropic material is replaced with an isotropic matrix reinforced with fibers. A comparison between available experimental observations and theoretical estimation implies on capability of developed criterion for predicting both crack propagation direction and fracture instance, wherein the achieved fracture limit curves are also compatible with fracture mechanism of orthotic materials. It is also shown that unlike isotropic materials, fracture toughness of orthotic materials in mode $I(K)_{IC}{\mid})$ cannot be introduced as the maximum load bearing capacity and thus new fracture mechanics property, named here as maximum orthotropic fracture toughness in mode $I(K_{IC}{\mid}^{ortho}_{max})$ is defined. Optimum angle between crack and fiber direction for maximum load bearing in orthotropic materials is also defined.

  • The design of foundations based on a deterministic approach may not be safe and reliable occasionally, since soils sometimes show considerable spatial variability, and thus, significant uncertainties in turn affect the estimation of footing bearing capacity. The design of footing on cohesionless stratums on the basis of reliability analysis has not received much attention. This paper performs two-dimensional random finite difference analyses of shallow strip footings on a spatially variable frictional soil considering correlation structure. Friction angle (ϕ) is considered as a log-normally distributed random variable and Monte Carlo Simulation is then performed to determine the statistical response based on the random fields. A new approach reliability-based safety factor is defined based on various reliability levels by considering the coefficient of variation of ϕ and correlation length in both the horizontal and vertical directions. The comparison of the probabilistic safety factor and the conventional one illustrates the limitations of the deterministic safety factor and provides insight into how the heterogeneity of soils properties affects the required safety factor. Results show that the conventional safety factor of 3 can be conservative in some cases, especially for soil with low values of mean ϕ and COVϕ.

  • The bearing capacity of open-ended piles is affected by the degree of soil plugging, which is quantified by the incremental filling ratio, IFR. There is not at present a design criterion for open-ended piles that explicitly considers the effect of IFR on pile load capacity. In order to investigate this effect, model pile load tests using a calibration chamber were conducted on instrumented open-ended piles. The results of these tests show that the IFR can be estimated from the plug length ratio PLR, which is defined as the ratio of soil plug length to pile penetration depth. The unit base and shaft resistances decrease with increasing IFR. Based on the results of the model pile tests, new design equations for calculating base load capacity and shaft load capacity of open-ended piles are proposed.

  • This study investigates the response of structures to tunnelling-induced ground movements in clay ground, varying tunnel excavation condition (tunnel depth and diameter), tunnel construction condition (ground loss), and tunnel ground condition (soft clay and stiff clay). Four-story block-bearing structures have been used because the structures can easily be characterized of the extent of damages with crack size and distribution. Numerical parametric studies have been used to investigate of the response of structures to varying tunnelling conditions. Numerical analysis has been conducted using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to have real cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The results of structure responses from various parametric studies have been integrated to consider tunnel excavation condition, tunnel construction condition, and tunnel ground condition and provide a relationship chart among them. Using the chart, the response of structures to tunnelling can easily be evaluated in practice in clay ground.

  • In this study, a series of centrifuge tests were performed in order to observe the bearing capacity of waveform micropile, a new concept of micropile that uses a modified jet grouting process. A total of six models were considered, conventional micropile, jet grouted pile, and four different shapes of waveform micropiles. The test results indicated that the waveform micropile effectively contributes to the increase of the bearing capacity compared to the micropile without the shear keys. Among the waveform micropiles, the model that has a relatively small space between the shear keys showed the most significant improvement of load capacity. Additionally, the ultimate load capacities of all piles were compared using well-known estimation method. As a result, P-S curve method and total settlement method with 25.4 mm were considered suitable to account ultimate load for the waveform micropile.

  • A single near-field sounde source bearing and ranging method based on a independent doublet array is proposed. In the common case of bearing estimation method, unform linear array or uniform circular array are used. It is constrained retaining aperture because of array structure to estimate the distance of the sound source. Recent using independent doublet array sound source's bearing and distance esmtimation method is proposed by wide aperture. It is limited to the case doublets are located on a straight line. In this paper, we generalize the case and estimate the localization of a sound source in the various array structure. The proposed algorithm was verified performance through simulation.

  • Methane hydrates are considered important in terms of their effect on global warming and as potential energy resources. Now, mainly the presence of a BSR and seismic velocity are used for estimation of methane hydrate concentration in the seismic reflection survey. But recent studies on seismic attenuation show that it can be used also to estimate methane hydrates concentration. In this study, we tried to estimate attenuation from 2D seismic reflection data acquired at Nankai Trough in Japan and analyzed attenuation properties in methane hydrate bearing sediments. Seismic attenuation estimated by QVO method in an offset range $125{\sim}1,575m$. We observed high attenuation in methane hydrate bearing sediments over BSR in a frequency range of 30-70Hz. Thus, this result demonstrates that seismic reflection wave within this frequency range are affected significantly by the existence of methane hydrate concentration zone.
