  • This paper describes the fluttering characteristics of the upper pad in a tilting pad journal bearing(6-pad, LOP type) using a steam turbine. In order to investigate the phenomena of the pad fluttering experimentally, the absolute vibration of the upper pads, the relative vibration between the bearing and the shaft and the circumferential distribution of the film thickness are measured under the different values of oil supply flow rate, shaft speed and bearing load. • This paper presents a method to investigate the characteristics of a ball bearing and the dynamics of a HDD spindle system due to temperature variation. Finite element model is developed for the rotating and stationary parts of a HDD spindle system separately to determine their thermal deformations by using ANSYS, a finite element program. Then, the relative position of the rotating part with respect to the stationary part is determined by solving the equilibrium equation of the contact force between upper and lower ball bearings. The validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the theoretical natural frequencies of a HDD spindle system with the experimental ones before and after temperature variation. It shows that the elevated temperature results in the increase of contact angle and the decrease of bearing deformation, contact force and bearing stiffness, which result in the decrease of the natural frequencies of a HDD spindle system.

  • In this paper, the dynamic characteristic analysis of carriage structure supported by air bearings were performed. Toward this end, the characteristics of air bearing were numerically analyzed to estimate the stiffness of the air bearing and the clearance between air bearing and guide surface. The modal analysis of the carriage structure was performed by using finite element method, and the experimental modal analysis was also performed to validate the finite element model, where rigid body modes were compared to validate the stiffness of the air bearings. From the results, the air spring stiffness can be estimated within the range of acceptable accuracy under any pressure and clearance condition.

  • The ball bearing having faults generally shows, nonlinear vibration characteristics. For the effective method of fault diagnosis on bail bearing, non-linear diagnostic methods can be used. In this paper, the correlation dimension analysis based on nonlinear timeseries was applied to diagnose the faults of ball bearing. The correlation dimension analysis shows some Intrinsic information of underlying dynamical systems, and clear the classification of the fault of ball bearing.

  • This paper is a study on the dynamic characteristics of truncated cone type squeeze film damper(SFD) bearing and rotor system. This model can alter the radial oil film gap which Is Important to the performance of rotor-bearing system and manufactured easily to change the shape concept of traditional circular type SFD bearing. In theoretical analysis, the oil film pressure distribution, the oil film force, the film damping coefficient and the eccentricity ratio, etc. were induced with regard to the film inertia effect. The film damping coefficients and optimum design parameters are calculated. When unbalance parameter U is greater than 0.2, the nonlinear vibration such as "Jump" phenomena appears in the vicinity of rotor critical speed. At this time, the increases of bearing parameter U, journal distance S, Reynolds number Re can control this unstable vibration. The experimental results show that SFD hearing and rotor system which are designed according to the design parameters in the stable region are operated stably in rotational speed 9,600rpm without nonsynchronous behavior.

  • Rapid increase of Refrigeration and Air conditioning system in modem industries brings attention to the urgency of core technology development in the area. This paper presents theoretical investigation of the lubrication characteristics of rotary compressor for refrigeration and air conditioning. In order to analyze the lubrication characteristics of the main & sub bearing of rotary compressor, the bearing force and locus of shaft center are analyzed by the dynamic analysis of rotary compressor and numerical analysis of Reynolds equation as the operating condition is changed in various ways. In this paper, we used the Runge-Kutta method for the dynamic analysis of rotary compressor and the SOR (Successive OverRelaxation) method for the numerical analysis of Reynolds equation. The result shows that the operating condition of sub bearing is severer than that of main bearing, and eccentricity ratio grows as the bearing force increases. It is believed that the result can be applied to the design of alternative refrigerant rotary compressor.

  • Data-driven method for fault diagnostics system often use machine learning technique. To use such technique proper signal processing should be implemented such as time synchronous averaging (TSA) for ball bearing systems. However, for journal bearing diagnostics systems not much has been researched, and yet a proper signal processing method has not been studied. Therefore, in this research an optimal datum unit for a reliable journal bearing diagnostics system along with angular resampling process is being suggested. Before extracting time and frequency domain features, angular resampling is applied to each cycle of vibration data. As to preserve the characteristics of vibration signal, averaging method is replaced by finding the optimal datum unit which strengthens statistical characteristics of vibration signal. Then 20 features were extracted for various cases, and those features are being evaluated by two criteria, separability and classification accuracy.

  • This study is to evaluate the characteristics of bearing capacity for granite soils by N-value. The partial data is investigated for practical evaluation of weathering degree and bearing capacity on granite soils. The settlement is linearly decreased when the N-value is less than 50, but the settlement isn't constant when the N-value is more than 50. This is the affect of ground water. Therefore ground water is detailed evaluated. The bearing capacity is linearly increased when the N-value is less than 30, is inactively increased when the N-value is between 30 to 50, is constant when the value is more than 50.
