  • This paper is an experimental and numerical work of Investigating the bearing capacity of shallow foundation of rubble mound under eccentric loads. Parametric centrifuge model tests at the 50g level environments with the model footings in the form of strip footing were performed by changing the loading location of model footing, relative density and materials for ground foundation. For the model ground, crushed rock sampled from a rocky mountain was prepared with a grain size distribution of having an identical coefficient of uniformity to the field condition. Model ground was also prepared with relative densities of 50 % and 80 %. For loading condition, model tests with and without eccentric load were carned out to investigate the effect of eccentric loads and a numerical analysis with the commertially available software of FLAC was performed. For numerical estimation with FLAC, the hyperbolic model of a nonlinear elastic constitutive relationship was used to simulate the stress-stram constitutive relationship of model ground and a series of triaxial compression test were carried out to find the parameters for this model Test results were analyzed and compared with Meyerhof method (1963), effective area method based on the limit equilibrium method, and a numerical analysis with FLAC.

  • RAP(rammed aggregate pier) method which is intermediate foundation of deep and shallow foundation is used to improve the ground with high compaction energy. This method is widely spread around the world, but there are few examples and systemic researches for failure mechanism and bearing capacity of this method are not organized yet. In this paper, soil laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate the applicability of RAP method as the foundation of a structure. And the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of RAP method were studied with respect to various relative densities(35%, 65%, 90%), diameters(45mm, 60mm) and lengths(20cm, 30cm, 40cm). As results, stress concentration ratio decreased as diameter of RAP was increasing or length of RAP was decreased or relative density was decreased. however these results were not always constant. because systematic interaction between relative density and diameter and length of RAP can affect stress concentration ratio, more studies on stress concentration ratio are needed throughout laboratory and field tests.

  • Rural multi-purpose buildings needs to ensure their safety against various disasters. Therefore, a pile foundation, which is a foundation type that can transmit the load of the structure to the bedrock layer, has been designed. The pile foundation method is largely divided into driving piles method and pre-bored pile method. Recently, in order to respond to the Noise and Vibration Control Act and related environmental complaints, construction of pile foundation adopts pre-bored pile method. The bearing capacity of the pre-bored pile method is calculated through a load test in situ. However, a disadvantage stems in that it is difficult to measure the ultimate bearing capacity due to field conditions. Therefore, in this study, the skin frictional force of pre-bored pile was measured through a model test in laboratory for each pile filling material. In result, the pile filling material with using circulating resources shows superior skin frictional force than ordinary portland cement. This study also judged that the result can be applied in place of ordinary Portland cement in the field.

  • With the increasing usages of micropile, several researchers have been studying the bearing characteristics of micropile or micropile-raft system. But most cases of research were focused on the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system on sand layer. And it was not considered that the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system was affected by the failure mode of soil and pile installation conditions. Thereby this study conducted the numerical analysis to estimate the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system on sand or silt layer with different shear failure mode. It was found that the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system installed in positive or negative angle was larger than that of the system installed in vertical angle, in the case of the sand layer undergoing the general shear failure. In the case of silt layer undergoing the punching shear failure, the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system installed only in negative angle was larger than that installed in vertical or positive angle. And the bearing capacity of foundation system in positive angle was similar to the vertical micropile-raft system.

  • Composite foundation treated with compaction piles can eliminate collapsibility and improve the bearing capacity of foundation in loess area. However, the large number of piles in the composite foundation leads to difficulties in the analysis of such type of engineering works. This paper proposes two simplified methods to quantify the stability of composite foundation treated with a large number of compaction piles. The first method is based on the principle of making the area replacement ratios of the simplified model as the same time as the practical engineering situation. Then, discrete piles arranged in a triangular shape can be simplified in the model where the annular piles and compacted soil are arranged alternately. The second method implements equivalent continuous treatment in the pile-soil area and makes the whole treated region equivalent to a type of composite material. Both methods have been verified using treated foundation of an oil storage tank. The results have shown that the differences in the settlement values obtained from the water filled test in the field and those calculated by the two simplified methods are negligible. Using stability analysis, the difference ratios of the static and dynamic safety factors of the composite foundation treated with compaction piles calculated by these two simplified methods are found to be 3.56% and 5.32%, respectively. At the same time, both static and dynamic safety factors are larger than the general safety factor, which should be greater than or equal to 2.0 according to the provisions in civil engineering. This indicates that after being treated with compaction piles, the bearing capacity of the composite foundation is effectively improved and the foundation has enough safety reserve.

  • In this paper bearing capacity and safety margin of shallow foundation on weathered soil ground against shear failure by using current design method of allowable stress design (ASD), load resistance factor design (LRFD) based on reliability analysis and partial safety factor design (PSFD) in Eurocode were estimated and compared to each other. Results of the plate loading test used in construction and design were collected and analysis of probability statistics on soil parameters affecting the bearing capacity of shallow foundation was performed to quantify the uncertainty of them and to investigate the resistance bias factor and covalence of ultimate bearing capacity. For the typical sections of shallow foundation in domestic field as examples, reliability index was obtained by reliability analysis (FORM) and the sensitivity analysis on soil parameters of probability variables was performed to investigate the effect of probability variable on shear failure. From stability analysis for these sections by ASD, LRFD with the target reiability index corresponding to the safety factor used in ASD and PSDF, safety margins were estimated respectively and compared.

  • In order to find out the effect of embedment ratio on behavior compensated foundation, numerical analyses were performed. Bearing capacity ratios obtained from numerical analyses were greater than those obtained from theoretical equations and it could be seen that the bearing capacity ratio was proportional to the embedment ratio with only exception of the case of square footing in which bearing capacity ratio was increased rapidly with the embedment ratio. For the case of strip footing on sand, the bearing capacity ratios obtained from the numerical analyses and Meyerhof equation were similar with each other and magnitudes of those were as much as square of the embedment ratio but the bearing capacity ratios were little affected by the embedment ratios for the case of strip footing on clay. It can be said that the bearing capacity ratios obtained from the square footing are greater than those obtained from the strip footing. According to the numerical analysis, values of settlement ratios which correspond to the embedment ratio of one were about 0.4 and settlement ratios were decreased with increase of the embedment ratios. Settlement ratios of the loose sand were smaller than those of the dense sand and the clay.

  • Digging well foundation has been widely used in railway bridges due to its good economy and reliability. In other instances, bridges with digging well foundation still have damage risks during earthquakes. In this study, a new type of digging well foundation with prefabricated roots was proposed to reduce earthquake damage of these bridges. Quasi-static tests were conducted to investigate the failure mechanism of the root digging well foundation, and then to analyze seismic behaviors of the new type well foundation. The testing results indicated that these prefabricated roots could effectively limit the rotation and uplift of the digging well foundation and increase the lateral bearing capacity of the digging well foundation. The elastic critical load and ultimate load can be increased by 69% and 36% if prefabricated roots were added in the digging well foundation. The prefabricated roots drived more soil around the foundation to participate in working, the stiffness of the bridge pier with root digging well foundation was improved. Moreover, the root participation could improve the energy dissipation capacity of soil-foundation-pier interaction system. The conclusions obtained in this paper had important guiding significance for the popularization and application of the digging well foundation with prefabricated roots in earthquake-prone zones.

  • In this paper the settlement characteristic of shallow foundation on sandy soil overlained by rigid ground was investigated by analyzing results of model tests. For model experiments, model tests were performed with sandy soils sampled from the field, changing the relative density of sandy soil and the ratio of thickness of sandy layer(H) to the width of model strip footing(B). As result of tests, settlement of sandy soils increases as the value of H/B increases, whereas it increases with relative density of soil. Bearing capacity decreases as the thickness of the sand layer relative to the footing width increases. In order to analyze the settlement characteristics of sandy ground, the results of model tests were compared with the predicted values using the empirical formulas proposed by Terzaghi, De Beer and Schmertmann. The method by De Beer was found to be in good agreements with test results.

  • In remodeling business or construction of both new strucures and existing structures, Case that pile foundation was set is often. Micro pile, holding compressive force and tensile force by spherical friction, is supported by skin friction rather than end bearing capacity. but, This is weak in tension. Active area of micro pile's skin friction is narrow and micro pile don't do unification behavior hence. So bearing capacity was not fully mobilized in existing researching. In this study, in order to compensate for this method, micro pile to install Resisting Fixture is proposed.
