  • The purpose of this study is to determine the order of priority for the use of amendments, matching the optimal amendment to the specific site in Korea. This decision-making process must prioritize the stabilization and economic efficiency of amendment for heavy metals and metalloid based on domestic site contamination scenarios. For this study, total 5 domestic heavy metal contaminated sites were selected based on different pollution scenarios and 13 amendments, which were previously studied as the soil stabilizer. Batch extraction experiments were performed to quantify the stabilization efficiency for 8 heavy metals (including As and Hg) for 5 soil samples, representing 5 different pollution scenarios. For each amendment, the analyses using XRD and XRF to identify their properties, the toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) test, and the synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) test were also conducted to evaluate the leaching safety in applied site. From results of batch experiments, the amendments showing > 20% extraction lowering efficiency for each heavy metal (metalloid) was selected and the top 5 ranked amendments were determined at different amount of amendment and on different extraction time conditions. For each amendment, the total number of times ranked in the top 5 was counted, prioritizing the feasible amendment for specific domestic contaminated sites in Korea. Mine drainage treatment sludge, iron oxide, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcite, iron sulfide, biochar showed high extraction decreasing efficiency for heavy metals in descending order. When the economic efficiency for these amendments was analyzed, mine drainage treatment sludge, limestone, steel making slag, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide were determined as the priority amendment for the Korean field application in descending order.

  • In this study, anaerobic co-digestion was carried out using desulfurization sludge and sewage sludge (primary sludge) to evaluate the effects of sulfur compounds in anaerobic digestion. The experiment was carried out in the form of a batch test using 500 mL duran bottle, and the mixing ratio of the feedstock was selected based on the ratio of COD/SO4. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the amount of biogas generated and the yield decreased at the mixing ratio of COD/SO4 20 or less. In particular, below COD/SO4 10, it was lower than seed (283.5 mL) which was set without feedstock to correct biogas generated by itself from seed sludge. Methane yield tended to decrease from a ratio of COD/SO4 20 or less to 0.135 m3/kg VS compared to 0.396 m3/kg VS of COD/SO4 50. In addition, compared to 0.0097 m3/kg VS of hydrogen sulfide yield from COD/SO4 50, the ratio of COD/SO4 20 increased sharply to 0.0223 m3/kg VS, and in particular, the highest result was 0.0855 m3/kg VS in COD/SO4 10. Based on these results, it is judged that the effect of sulfide in anaerobic digestion can have an adverse effect if the COD/SO4 ratio decreases to less than 20.

  • MTBE (Methyl tertiary-butyl ether) has been commonly used as an octane enhancer to replace tetraethyl lead in gasoline, because MTBE increases the efficiency of combustion and decreases the emission of carbon monoxide. However, MTBE has been found in groundwater from the fuel spills and leaks in the UST (Underground Storage Tank). Fenton's oxidation, an advanced oxidation catalyzed with ferrous iron, is successful in removing MTBE in groundwater. However, Fenton's oxidation requires the continuous addition of dissolved $Fe^{2+}$. Zero-valent iron is available as a source of catalytic ferrous iron of MFO (Modified Fenton's Oxidation) and has been studied for use in PRBs (Permeable Reactive Barriers) as a reactive material. Therefore, this study investigated the condition of optimization in MFO-PRBs using waste zero-valent iron (ZVI) with the waste steel scrap to treat MTBE contaminated groundwater. Batch tests were examined to find optimal molar ratio of MTBE : $H_2O_2$ on extent to degradation of MTBE in groundwater at pH 7 with 10% waste ZVI. As the results, the ratio of optimization of MTBE to hydrogen peroxide for MFO was determined to be 1:300[mM]. The column experiment was conducted to know applicability of MFO-PRBs for MTBE remediation in groundwater. As the results of column test, MTBE was removed 87% of the initial concentration during 120days of operational period. Interestingly, MTBE was degraded not only within waste ZVI column but also within sand column. It means the aquifer may affect continuously the MTBE contaminated groundwater after throughout the waste ZVI barrier. The residual products showed acetone, TBF (Tert-butyl formate) and TBA (Tert-butyl acetate) during this test. The results of the present study showed that the recycled materials can be effectively used for not only a source of catalytic ferrous iron but also a reactive material of the MFO-PRBs to remove MTBE in groundwater.

  • A membrane bioreactor by sequentially alternating the inflow and by applying a two-stage coagulation control based on pre-coagulation was evaluated in terms of phosphorus removal efficiency and cost-savings. The MBR consisted of two identical alternative reaction tanks, followed by aerobic, anoxic and membrane tanks, where the wastewater and the internal return sludge alternatively flowed into each alternative reaction tank at every 2 hours. In the batch-operated alternative reaction tank, the initial concentration of nitrate rapidly decreased from 2.3 to 0.4 mg/L for only 20 minutes after stopping the inflow, followed by substantial release of phosphorus up to 4 mg/L under anaerobic condition. Jar test showed that the minimum alum doses to reduce the initial $PO_4$-P below 0.2 mg/L were 2 and 9 mol-Al/mol-P in the wastewater and the activated sludge from the membrane tank, respectively. It implies that a pre-coagulation in influent is more cost-efficient for phosphorus removal than the coagulation in the bioreactor. On the result of NUR test, there were little difference in terms of denitrification rate and contents of readily biodegradable COD between raw wastewater and pre-coagulated wastewater. When adding alum into the aerobic tank, alum doses above 26 mg/L as $Al_2O_3$ caused inhibitory effects on ammonia oxidation. Using the two-stage coagulation control based on pre-coagulation, the P concentration in the MBR effluent was kept below 0.2 mg/L with the alum of 2.7 mg/L as $Al_2O_3$, which was much lower than 5.1~7.4 mg/L as $Al_2O_3$ required for typical wastewater treatment plants. During the long-term operation of MBR, there was no change of the TMP increase rate before and after alum addition.

  • Iron sand, having iron as a major component, was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing Cu(II) or Pb(II). To investigate the stability of iron sand at acidic condition, dissolution of Fe and Al was studied with variation of solution pH ranging from 2 to 4.5. Iron concentration in the extracted solution was below the emission regulation of wastewater even at a strong acidic condition, pH 2. Although an important concentration of aluminum was extracted at pH 2, the dissolution greatly decreased above pH 3. This stability test suggests that application of iron sand has little problem in the treatment of wastewater above pH 3. Adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto iron sand was investigated in a batch and a column test. In case of Cu(II), rapid adsorption was noted, showing 50% removal within 2 hrs, and then reached a near complete equilibrium after 24 hrs. Adsorption was favorable at higher pH in each metal ion and showed a near complete removal above pH 6, indicating a typical cationic-type adsorption. From the adsorption isotherm obtained with variation of the concentration of each metal ion, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) was identified as 2,170 mg/kg 및 3,450 mg/kg, respectively.

  • 371 strains of marine bacteria were isolated from Gwangyang bay in Korea. The dominant species were identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aeromonas hydrophila, P. fluorescens, P. paucimobilis, Chryseomonas luteola and P. vescularis. To screen marine bacteria capable of removing nutrients and organics, marine bacteria was inoculated in 10 mL of marine broth 2216 (DIFCO) with $NH_3-N$ (100 mg/L), ${NO_3}^{-}-N$ (100 mg/L), and ${PO_4}^{-3}-P$ (10 mg/L) with 1.0% (v/v), and incubated for 12 h. Results from the screening test, showed that the removal efficiencies for $COD_{Cr}$, ammonia niterogen, nitrate nitrogen, and phosphate were over 25% for 16 strains, 15% for 9 strains, 50% for 63 strains, and 15% for 80 strains, respectively. Aeromonas hydrophila, Chryseomonas indologenes, Pseudomonas diminuta, Vibrio parahaemolyticus were selected for nutrients removal experiments. For the batch test, 4 species of marine bacteria were inoculated in modified marine broth containing with nutrients($COD_{Cr}$ 250 mg/L, $NH_3-N$ 40 mg/L, ${NO_3}^{-}-N$ 40 mg/L, ${PO_4}^{3-}-P$ 10 mg/L, respectively), incubated for 10 hr and the removal efficiencies were measured.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage (AMD) by multi-functional zeolite-slag ceramics (ZS ceramics), in which natural zeolite and converter slag were mixed and calcined at high temperature. The batch test showed that the removal efficiency of heavy metals by pellet-type ZS ceramics increased as the mixing weight ratio of converter slag to natural zeolite increased. The optimal mixing ratio of natural zeolite to converter slag for the removal of heavy metals and sulfate ion from AMD was observed to be 1:2~1:3. The adequate calcination temperature and time of ZS ceramics for the treatment of AMD were found to be $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ and 2 hours, respectively. The removal test of heavy metals and sulfate ion from AMD by the ZS ceramics prepared in optimal condition exhibited very high removal efficiencies close to 100% for all heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn) and 77.1% for sulfate ion. The experimental results in this study revealed that the ZS ceramics could function as an effective agent for the treatment of AMD.

  • Compaction of backfill material of Underground power lines is difficult, especially under pipeline. so it could cause structural problem because of low compaction efficiency. So various methods have been taken to solve the problem and one of them is CLSM(Controled low-strength material accelerated flow ability). But In other countries, these are already in progress for a long time to research and development and recently on practical steps. But, in our country, study for only general structures, not for underground power line structure that is being constructed at night rapidly. In this study, we performed property tests and indoor & outdoor test (3 cases). The tests showed flow ability reached at the limit construction(160 mm) flowability by 9 to 15 minute after starting to mix, and construction buoyant is lowering after placing CLSM by 70 % of theoretical buoyant that is calculated by unit weight of material. In this paper, we performed indoor tests and outdoor tests to estimate mechanical properties and to suggest construction method(using batch plant, setting spacer at 1.8 m and placing at 2m) for CLSM that using surplus soil. And the test showed good results for construction quality, workability and structure safety.

  • Modified-live (ML) infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) vaccines have been widely used as a preventive measure in Korea since the first outbreak of ITL. Recently, it has been observed that chickens vaccinated with the commercially available ML ILT vaccine have sometimes exhibited adverse clinical signs. In this study, we evaluated the quality of the vaccines by comparing titer of each vaccine batch and testing the stability of ILT virus (ILTV) in vaccine diluents and compared the safety and efficacy of vaccines in specific pathogen free (SPF) chickens. The ratio of maximum titer to minimum titer of vaccine produced by most manufacturers was 2 to 15. However, 2 out of 11 manufacturers produced vaccines of which the ratio was 74 to 478. Most vaccines examined were maintained vaccine titers suitable for national regulations within expiry date. However, some vaccines did not keep the titer required for the national regulations. In the test for stability of ILTV in various diluents, ILTV was highly stable in lactose-phosphate-glutamine-gelatin solution, sucrose-phophate-glutamine-albumin solution and some vaccine diluents produced by manufacturers. The safety of ML ILT vaccines was assessed in 10-day-old SPF chicks. Mortality in SPF chicks inoculated intratracheally with one dose of vaccine varied depending on vaccines and some vaccines produced 50-85% mortality. Seven-week-old SPF chickens were vaccinated intraocularly with ML ILT vaccines and then challenged intratracheally with ILT challenge virus 14 days after vaccination. The protection rate was assessed by clinical signs and reisolation of the ILT challenge virus from tracheas taken at day 4 after challenge. There were slight respiratory reactions in some vaccinated chickens after vaccination but these reactions disappeared within 5 days after vaccination. No further clinical signs and death were observed. Protection rate determined by clinical signs and mortality was 100% in all vaccinated groups. However, the challenge virus was isolated from all tracheas of chickens vaccinated with vaccine B or control groups. The challenge virus was also isolated in the trachea of one in five chickens vaccinated with either vaccine F or K, but not in tracheas of chickens vaccinated with other vaccines. In the present study, the stability of vaccine diluents, pathogenicity and protection rate based on reisolation test of the challenge virus were different depending on vaccines produced by eleven manufacturers.

  • We investigated the effect on the removal of BOD, SS, TN and TP and algal growth inhibition of Vegetated Artificial Floating Island (VAFI), by examining microorganism activity and nutrient uptake in the batch test of various conditions: (1) Blank (Control group), (2) VAFI of $0.25m^2$, (3) AFI of $0.25m^2$ which has no vegetation, (4) buoyant plate of $0.25m^2$, (5) buoyant plate of $0.25m^2$ with linear media. The proportion of BOD removal in the VAFI, AFI, buoyant plate and buoyant plate with media were 82.7, 80.8, 45.2% and 59.6% respectively. TN removal in the VAFI, AFI and buoyant plate with media were 51.2, 31.7% and 25.1% respectively. TP removal in the VAFI, AFI, buoyant plate and buoyant plate with media were 23.3, 16.7, 10.0% and 13.3% respectively. Chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ removal in the VAFI was 97.9%. The factors of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ removal in the VAFI accounted for the shading effect of 35.1%, microorganisms activity of 61%, and plant root of 1.8%.
