The production of polyhydroxyalkanoate(PHA) from glucose by batch and fed-batch culture of Pseudomonas sp. HJ was studied. In batch culture using fermentor, 400 rpm of agitalion speed, 2 vvm of aeration rate, 18 hours of inoculum age, and 5% (vlv) of inoculum size were optimal. PHA production was not increased by deficiency of oxygen. In a batch culture, the final call mass was $6.251g/\ell$, and PHA content was 20% of dry cell weight. In a constant feeding fed-batch culture, cell mass increased to $33.24g/\ell$, and PHA content reached 48.9% of dry cell weight. In an intermittent feeding fed-batch culture, cell mass increased to $37.89g/\ell$, and PHA content reached 53.5% of dty cell weight.

Brown algae, Sargassum horneri, was used as an adsorbent to remove heavy metal Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. Sargassum horneri picked in East Coast was formulated into the grain with the size of 40-60 mesh after wind dry. Batch method was used in order to investigate the adsorption rate by measuring the adsorption amounts with shaking time. In the column method, the adsorption amounts were measured by flowing metal solutions into the algae-packed column at the rate of 1 ml/min. Adsorption amounts in both batch method and column method were in the following order : pH 10.5>7.0>3.5. It was found that Pb(II) was more adsorbed on the algae grain than Cd(II). It was also revealed that the adsorption amounts reached the maximum within 5 minutes irrespective of pH condition in the batch method. It was concluded that the batch method was more effective than the column method in terms of recovery rate.

Many small and medium-sized manufacturing companies process various product types to respond different customer orders in a single production line. To improve their productivity, they often apply batch processing while considering various product types, constraints on batch sizes and setups, and due date of each order. This study introduces a batch scheduling heuristic for a production line with multiple product types and different due dates of each order. As the process times vary due to the different batch sizes and product types, a recursive equation is developed based on a flow line model to obtain the upper bound on the completion times with less computational complexity than full computation. The batch scheduling algorithm combines and schedules the orders with same product types into a batch to improve productivity, but within the constraints to match the due dates of the orders. The algorithm incorporates simple and intuitive principles for the purpose of being applied to small and medium companies. To test the algorithm, two case studies are introduced; a high pressure coolant (HPC) manufacturing line and a press process at a plate-type heat exchanger manufacturer. From the case studies, the developed algorithm provides significant improvements in setup frequency and thus convenience of workers and productivity, without violating due dates of each order.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the rupture disk design(size) and application at the two phase(gas-liquid) flow by runaway reaction at batch reactor. The definition of runaway reaction is abnormally exothermic reaction by the uncontrolled cooling water or deviated operating condition. As a result, the temperature of reactor is rapidly increasing. The causes of runaway reaction are either self-heating reaction or sleeper reaction. General methods of rupture disk size or safety valve are not suitable in the runaway reaction, because of temperature and pressure increasing rapidly in the reactor and the phases of relieving fluid is 2-phase flow. This study case of the reactor incident, the depressurization system such as safety valve and vent installed, however, the system did not relieved the pressure of reactor suitably. The orifice size of the safety valve were designed too small because the size had not been considered the phenomena and character of reaction. The batch reactor design should be considered by referring to the possibility of runaway reaction proposed in this study and the size of rupture disk design method considering 2-phase flow.

The aim of this study is to find an analytic solution to the problem of determining the optimal capacity of a batch-storage network to meet demand for finished products in a system undergoing joint random variations of operating time and batch material loss. The superstructure of the plant considered here consists of a network of serially and/or parallel interlinked batch processes and storage units. The production processes transform a set of feedstock materials into another set of products with constant conversion factors. The final product demand flow is susceptible to joint random variations in the cycle time and batch size. The production processes have also joint random variations in cycle time and product quantity. The spoiled materials are treated through regeneration or waste disposal processes. The objective function of the optimization is minimizing the total cost, which is composed of setup and inventory holding costs as well as the capital costs of constructing processes and storage units. A novel production and inventory analysis the PSW (Periodic Square Wave) model, provides a judicious graphical method to find the upper and lower bounds of random flows. The advantage of this model is that it provides a set of simple analytic solutions while also maintaining a realistic description of the random material flows between processes and storage units; as a consequence of these analytic solutions, the computation burden is significantly reduced. The proposed method has the potential to rapidly provide very useful data on which to base investment decisions during the early plant design stage. It should be of particular use when these decisions must be made in a highly uncertain business environment.

The purpose of this study is to find the optimum skirt size for a composite pressure vessel using optimum analysis technique. The size optimization for skirt shape of a composite pressure vessel was conducted using sub-problem approximation method and batch processing codes programmed by APDL(ANSYS Parametric Design Language). The thickness and length of skirt part were selected as design variables for the optimum analysis. The objective function and constraints were chosen as weight and displacement of skirt part, respectively. The numerical results showed that the weight of skirt of a composite pressure vessel would be saved by maximum 4.38% through the size optimization analysis for the skirt shape.
The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of an Ni-SA catalyst, which was prepared from nickel, kieselguhr, and alumina, for the hydrogenation of triglyceride in a bench-scale reactor. Ni-SA powders were prepared by precipitating nickel precursors on a silica and alumina support. The powder was reduced in a hydrogen flow, mixed with a saturated palm oil, and then cooled to prepare an Ni-SA catalyst tablet. The sizes of NiO crystals of a commercial Pricat catalyst and the Ni-SA catalyst prepared in this study were $35{\AA}$ and $38{\AA}$, respectively. The pore volume and pore size of the Ni-SA catalyst was much larger than the pore volume and pore size of the Pricat catalyst. In addition, the average particle size of the Ni-SA catalyst was much smaller than that of the Pricat catalyst. The triglyceride hydrogenation reaction was carried out in a semi-batch reactor using catalysts impregnated with oil and molded into tablets. It was found that the Ni-SA catalyst was superior to the commercial Pricat catalyst in triglyceride hydrogenation, which could be ascribed to the raw material and the products being less influenced by the diffusion resistance in the pores of the Ni-SA catalyst. The Ni-SA catalyst prepared in this study has the potential to replace the Pricat catalyst as a catalyst for use in the commercial process for hydrogenation of triglyceride.

In this paper, we propose an approximation of the M/G/1 system with finite workload capacity, where customers whose admission to the system would increase the workload beyond a prespecified finite capacity limit are not accepted. Our approximation method is based on the idea that the service time of a customer in the M/G/1 system can be approximated as the sum of service times of a batch of customers in the $M^{X}/d/1$ system where the service time is deterministic and very small. That is, the original service time is discretized and approximated by the batch size. We exemplified our method by obtaining the average workload of the M/M/1 system by means of the $M^{X}/d/1$ system, where the batch size is geometric. In addition, the approximate blocking probabilities of the M/M/1 and $M/E_{k}/1$ system with finite workload capacities are sought. The proposed method turns out to give a good approximation, which is compared with a simulation.

We propose an approximation of the M/G/1 system with finite workload capacity, where those customers whose admission to the system would increase the workload beyond a prespecified finite capacity limit are not accepted. Our approximation method is based on the idea that the service time of a customer in the M/G/1 system can be approximated as the sum of service times of a batch of customers in the $M^X/d/1$ system where the deterministic service time d is small enough. That is, the original service time is discretized and approximated by the batch size. We exemplified our method by obtaining the average workload of the M/M/1 system by means of the $M^X/d/1$ system, where the batch size is geometric. In addition, the approximate blocking probabilities of the M/M/1 and $M/E_k/1$ system with finite workload capacities are sought. The proposed method turns out to give a good approximation, which is compared with a simulation.
For mass production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), high cell density cultures of Alcaligenes eutrophus by fed-batch culture under phosphate-limitation condition has been investigated. PHA accumulation by the regulation by the regulation of initial phosphate concentration could be automatically induced, and high density cell culture above 200 g/L also could be successfully produced. The production of Poly-$\beta$-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and dry cell weight increased with increasing the initial phosphate concentration. When the initial concentrations of phosphate were in the ranges of 1.5~4.5 g-PO$_4$/L, PHB and dry cell weight obtained were 83~266 g/L and 61~216 g/L, respectively, and PHB productivity was in the ranges of 1.35~3.10 g/L.h. When a mixture of glucose and propionic acid is used as carbon sources, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-poly-3-hydroxyvalerate), P(3HB-co-3HV), could be also successfully produced under phosphate limitation condition. When the mole ratio of propionic acid to glucose in the feeding solution is 0.22, a final dry cell weight of 150 g/L and a P(3-HB-co-3HV) of 90 g/L were produced. Morphological changes and size distribution of PHB granules synthesized in A. eutrophus under phosphate-limitation condition are determined by TEM during the course of fed-batch. Mean granule diameters of PHB produced are in the range of 0.36~0.39 $\mu$m, and mean cell size was elongated from 0.54~0.59 $\mu$m$\times$ 1.3~1.5 $\mu$m to 0.83~0.89 $\mu$m $\times$2.0~2.3 $\mu$m. Phosphate concentration in media did not affect size distribution of PHB granule and cell.
