  • The main purpose of this study is to determine bifurcation as the primary instability of a glass melting furnace. Steady-state and unsteady characteristics of natural convection in the partially open cavity as appeared in a glass melting furnace is investigated by using numerical analysis. Three types of convection, such as steady laminar, unsteady periodic or unsteady quasi-periodic convection may occur according to the temperature difference between upper two isothermal surfaces along the depth of cavity in a glass melting furnace. In the temperature difference of 150-900 K between batch and free surface, the larger the temperature difference, the weaker the convection strength and unsteadiness. Since the glass viscosity is increasing exponentially in the lower temperature, the batch freezes the thermofluidic field especially below the surface of it. If the depth of cavity is 0.5 m, the bifurcation to time-dependent natural convection may occur in the range of 60-650 K. If that is 1.0 m, it may occur in the whole range of temperature difference.

  • Effects of particulate size and frictional characteristics were examined on the melting behavior of PP (polypropylene) in a batch mixer. Powder and pellet types of PP were used and each component was blended with PE (polyethylene) wax and clay, respectively. It was observed that small size particulates, i.e. powder systems exhibit accelerated melting behavior; and it was also found that the abrasive additive acts as an effective agent for fast melting of PP powder. Retardation of melting due to the reduced friction was observed in PP pellet/PE wax blends, while melting rate of PP powder was increased by addition of PE wax.

Retardation of melting due to the reduced friction was observed in both types of PP, contrary to the result found in a batch mixer. The tendency observed in variation of torque and exit temperature was explained in terms of frictional effect and length of compacted region formed during evolution of melting.

  • For $Na_2O-BaO-SiO_2$ system glass the pelletizing conditions of the disk type equipment were investigated. The effects of the pelletized batch on melting were also examined. Through the experiment the optimum conditions for pelletizing the batch were found as follows. Revolving speed of the pan 30rpm pan angle 40-35 degree Water content 12-13% Drying temperature $200^{\circ}C$ Preheating temperature $650^{\circ}C$ The molten glass of the pelletized batch was refined better than that of the loose batch.

  • In this study, the redox state of iron in sodium silicate glasses was varied by changing the melting conditions, such as the melting temperature and particle size of iron oxide. The oxidation states of the iron ion were determined by wet chemical analysis and UV-Vis spectroscopy methods. Iron commonly exists as an equilibrium mixture of ferrous ions, $Fe^{2+}$, and ferric ions $Fe^{3+}$. In this study, sodium silicate glasses containing nanoparticles of iron oxide (0.5% mol) were prepared at various temperatures. Increase of temperature led to the transformation of ferric ions to ferrous ions, and the intensity of the ferrous peak in 1050 nm increased. Nanoparticle iron oxide caused fewer ferrous ions to be formed and the $\frac{Fe^{2+}}{Fe^{3+}}$ equilibrium ratio compared to that with micro-oxide iron powder was lower.

  • The Anorthite is useful compound for some ceramic industries but it is difficult to produce Anorthite because of its high melting point (1553$^{\circ}C$) and narrow firing range. On this study, glass frit was added to Anorthite batch composition to widen firing range and lower melting point. After mixing a glass frit $(Na_2O-CaO-6SiO_2)$ with Anorthite, it was melted and quenched. Ratio of Anorthite vs. glass frit was 9 : 1, 8.5 : 1.5, 8 : 2, 7.5 : 2.5, 7 : 3. In those batch composition added amount of $No_2O$ were between 1.3wt.% and 3.9wt.%. To find the thermal change of the quenched, D.T.A. was surveyed. The quenched were fired at various vitrification temperature and detected by X-Raydiffraction analysis. With addition of glass frit, firing range and vitrification temperature of Anorthite was 100~15$0^{\circ}C$ and 1050~115$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. Optimum amount of glass frit was 20wt.% for the upper mentioned.

  • The optical absorption of high index glasses of the system TiO2-BaO-B2O3 prepared from the raw materials for an optical waveguide glass has been measured in the near ultraviolet region. The amount of Ti3+ in the glass could be reduced to a level less than 5 ppm by melting a batch added with pure nitric acid, using a fused quartz crucible in an oxygen gas atmosphere. The ultra-pure glass of 10mm thick prepared in such a way did not show any appreciable color even for the one containing 30 mol% TiO2 and having refractive index nD of 1.84 and Abbe's number vD of 28.8. The wavelength of ultraviolet absorptin edge was longer for the glass of higher index and higher dispersdion. The melting of a TiO2 containing glass in a platinum crucible resulted in a coloration of the glass due to the dissolved plutinum from the crucible, which was more intense for the one containing larger amount of TiO2.

  • Cold-crucible induction melting (CCIM) technology has been intensively studied as an advanced vitrification process for the immobilization of highly radioactive waste. This technology uses high-frequency induction to melt a glass matrix and waste, while the outer surface of the crucible is water-cooled, resulting in the formation of a frozen glass layer (skull). In this study, for the fabrication of borosilicate glass waste form, CCIM operation test with 60 kg of glass per batch was conducted using surrogate wastes composed of Cs, Sr, and Nd as a representative of highly radioactive nuclides generated during spent nuclear fuel management. A 60 kg-scale glass waste form was successfully fabricated through melting and draining processes using a CCIM system, and its physicochemical properties were analyzed. In particular, to enhance the controllability and reliability of the draining process, an air-cooling drain control method that can control draining through air-cooling near drain holes was developed, and its validity for draining control was verified. The method can offer controllability on various draining processes, such as molten salt or molten metal draining processes, and can be applied to a process requiring high throughput draining.

  • Separation of mixed plastics is not a simple task due to similarities of specific gravity and limitations of sizes, etc. In this study, a new technique was developed to separate plastics selectively by a thermal adhesion method using the different softening or melting temperatures of various types of plastics. Tests were conducted to investigate softening or melting temperatures and adhesion probabilities of plastics with change in temperature. Tests also were conducted to analyze the operating variables, including contact times, size and color pigment. It was founded that LDPE, HDPE and PVC, PET, etc among mixed plastics could be separated selectively according to the change of temperature.

  • Trans free margarine stock (TFMS) was produced by lipase-catalyzed synthesis of fully hydrogenated soybean oil (FHSBO), avocado oil (AO) and palm oil (PO). A blend of FHSBO, AO, and PO with a 1:5:4 (30:150:120 g, respectively) ratio was interesterified with lipozyme RM IM(from Rhizomucor miehei) in a 1 L-batch type reactor at 65 for 12 hr, and the physicochemical and melting properties of TFMS were compared with commercial margarine. The solid fat content (%) of the TFMS was analyzed at 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively, while its melting point was $37.8^{\circ}C$. The trans fatty acid content of the TFMS was below 0.1%. It also had acid, saponification, and iodine values of 0.4, 173.9, and 58.6, respectively. In HPLC chromatograms of the TFMS, newly synthesized peaks of triacylglycerol molecules were observed by using reverse-phase HPLC with evaporative light-scattering detection. Normal-phase HPLC with UV detection was used to quantify tocopherols in the TFMS, indicating that its ${\alpha}-$, ${\gamma}-$ and ${\delta}$-tocopherol contents were 5.7, 2.1, and 1.7 mg/100 g, respectively.
