In this study, the physical properties of base paper for the manufacture of mulching mat for afforestation seedling were investigated. The base paper for mulching mat was prepared by stock conditions of PAE and AKD addition into the screened slurry of KOCC for the strengthening effects of wet tensile and burst strength. The optimum additions of PAE and AKD were considered at 2% and 0.5%, respectively. The accelerated aging by ISO 5630-1 and wet heat aging method under hot water for 2 kinds of commercial mulching and wet strength paper were compared with the base paper prepared for mulching mat manufacture. The accelerated aging test for the base paper prepared for mulching mat manufacture resulted in the same tendency of physical properties as two kinds of commercial products. However, the results of wet heat aging test under hot water indicated that the physical strength for base paper prepared was much higher than others. In addition, the opacity behavior for base paper prepared was enough effects to obstruct weeds growth by isolating transmission of sunlight.

In the previous study, the possibility of modifying the surface properties of base paper with plasma treatment was evaluated. It was shown that only the hydrophilic properties of the base paper surface was increased while there was no changes in physical and optical properties. Only the surface of the plasma treated side was modified. In this study, the effect of plasma treatment on binder migration was elucidated. The base paper was plasma treated with various voltage and then the plasma treated base papers were coated with varying coated weight. The surface strength of the coated paper (dry and wet pick) was increased with plasma treatment, which implies that the plasma treatment of base paper can inhibit the binder migration.

PEA(Print Evenness Analyzer) Module can be utilized as a tool to evaluate print mottle. The tester is de-signed to measure the uniformity of liquid penetration into paper at very short contact time. To evaluate effects of base paper properties on print mottle, the experiments were performed with 3 types of base pa-per whose sizing degree, roughness and porosity were varied. Coated papers were produced with high solid coating color (70%) and low solid coating color (67%). Uniformity of water absorption into base paper and coated paper was measured with PEA. It was found that, in order to minimize print mottle, base paper shall be produced with a high sizing degree and low roughness and the concentration of coating color shall be kept as high as possible, providing that it has proper rheology properties for coating process.

The function of the moisture-proof paper is to prevent moisture from adsorbing into the packed goods. Water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper should be less than 100g/$m^2$.24hr and the optimum rate would be less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. The purpose of this paper was to make moisture-proof paper using the mixture of SB latex and wax emulsion which was recyclable and environmentally friendly. Water vapor transmission rate showed less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr in mixture ratio of 85:15, 87:13, 90:10. Especially the mixture ratio of 87:13 showed the most favorable water-vapor transmission rate. However, the moisture-proof layer was destroyed slightly by folding in packing. It has been observed that there was no close relationship between water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper and grammage of the base paper, but the density of base paper had influenced on water vapor transmission rate. It was also observed that the moisture-proof paper could be recycled. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of the pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particles which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping were measured to examine the fiber bonding, and no significant difference in physical properties was observed.

High loading of base paper is regarded as one of reasons to aggravate fold cracking of coated paper. But the relationship between the ash content of base paper and fold cracking of coated paper has not been shown yet. We investigated the effect of ash content in base paper on the fold cracking of coated paper. Handsheets with three different ash contents (19.5-23.5%) were prepared, and double layered coating were applied on the top side of the handsheets. A gravimetric water retention meter (AA-GWR) was employed to fold the paper with a uniform pressure after solid printing on the coated surface. The fold cracking was digitized by calculating the cracked area by means of an image analysis technique. Results suggested that high ash content in the base paper increased the fold cracking of the outer surface of coated papers. In the case of inner surface greater fold crack areas were obtained, and the number of cracks decreased because long and wide cracks were formed. Reduction in tensile strength and thickness appeared to give greater fold cracking for highly loaded papers.

We studied on the effects of the enzyme treatment of pulp fiber on physical properties of coated paper were elucidated using four types of enzymes. The results of this study showed that the blank in which enzyme was not treated showed the highest $St{\ddot{o}}ckigt$ and Hurcules sizing degrees. And when the enzyme treated base paper was used for coating, the coated paper has average 5.7 % higher gloss and whiteness than when untreated base paper was used. Brightness showed 0.12 % higher results with the enzyme treated base papers than the blank while it is considered to show similar trends. Whiteness of coated paper was not influenced by the enzyme treatments but by the properties of coating color. Coated paper whose base paper was enzyme treated showed improved roughness while smoothness of those samples except the ${\beta}$-Glucosidase treated one was relatively low due to the high fines content. Also the coated paper whose base paper was not enzyme treated showed high porosity.

In this study, as a fuel filter for automobiles, base paper which can filtrate the polluted particles must satisfy with the standards of each vehicle. and a filter of impregnation paper made that combining the base paper with the resin. Therefore, They were wanted to found out the factors that affect base paper and impregnation paper according to content of HPZ, Mulberry pulp(MP), Laub holze bleached kraft pulp(LBKP). The most important things we wanted to find out in base paper and impregnation paper test were weight, thickness, air permeability, burst and tensile strength, maximum pore size and mean pore size, stiffness. we wanted to measure a rate of change of these condition by adjusting a rate of mixing for HPZ, MP and LBKP. Moreover, It suited for an impregnation paper mixed with a rate of mulberry pulp 20%, HPZ 40% and LBKP 40%. Used resins in this study was Phenol, Acryl, PVAc. And as every resins, sample was divided into existence and nothing of embossing. as a fuel filter for automobiles, It was appeared that the suitable condition of base paper was a rate of mixing for HPZ(40%), MP(20%) and LBKP(40%).

Characteristics of coating color penetration into paper were elucidated using various types of pulps and pigments. A commercial paper, KP and TMP handsheets were used for base paper. Clay and GCC were used as coating pigment. Laboratory rod draw down coater was used for coating application. Coating color penetration was evaluated by measuring the roughness of surface and back side of a coating layer. The results of coating roughness showed that clay was much better than GCC as a coating pigment. In case of pulp type, KP base paper was more effective than TMP base paper to reduce coating penetration.

This study was conducted to modify the surface properties of papers by formation of hydrophobic self-assembled monolayer(SAM) on paper surface with silanes. A base paper I(0.5% AKD) and base paper II(1.0-1.5% AKD) were reacted with silanes(PFDTES, DMDCS, MODDCS) by immersion method and vapor deposition method. Hydrophobic SAMs(contact angle value>$120^{\circ}C$) were obtained on all papers after treatment with $10^{\mu}l$ PFDTES for 15min, with $50^{\mu}l$ DMDCS for 30min, with $50^{\mu}l$ MODDCS for 300min. When applying PFDTES to paper surface, lower silane concentration and shorter reaction time were required, whereas MODDCS with long alkyl chain required the longest reaction time of 300min. The st$\ddot{o}$ckight sizing degree of silane treated papers were increased between 105sec(base paper I) and 130sec(base paper II). The wet tensile strength of PFDTES-treated base papers(I, II) increased by 10-34% after SAM formation. However, the wet tensile strength of the DMDCS-treated base paper(I) was found to decrease from 0.067kN/m to 0.038kN/m; this may due to the cellulose degrading as a result of generated hydrogen chloride when hydroxyl group of cellulose were reacted with DMDCS. No apparent changes of PPS roughness on silane-treated papers are observed. The ATR-IR spectrum showed absorption peak located at 465 and 1200cm-1 which can be assigned to the Si-O-C asymmetric stretching and Si-O-C bonds, respectively.

The influence of base paper properties and fiber type on coating penetration was studied in terms of characterization of coating holdout using two types of hand sheets as the base paper which were prepared from thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and hardwood bleached kraft pulp(KP) sized internally with alkyl ketene dimmer (AKD). Laboratory rod draw down coater was used for surface sizing and coating application. Characterization of coating penetration was done by measuring the roughness of the backside of coating layer. The backside of the coating was exposed by dissolving the fibers in a solution of cupriethylenedimine (CEO). Data show that internal sizing of base paper is effective and surface sizing is more effective to prevent coating penetration. Comparing between the two types of base papers, backside roughness of coating layer of TMP sheet is much larger and sizing is more effective to reduce coating penetration than those of KP sheet. From the result of water absorption and sizing degree after surface sizing, it seems that internal sizing slows down molecular diffusion much more than capillary penetration, but surface sizing reduces the capillary penetration. Furthermore, predominant mechanism of water into paper of TMP sheet seems to be capillary penetration, but it is molecular diffusion in the case of KP sheet.
