  • HDD structure is excited by the dynamic motion of disk-spindle motor components. Those excitations which are generated at stator and magnet rotor, at bearings and from disk dynamics, are transmitted through motor spindle and flange to HDD cover and base. The operational deflection shape measurement can show the structural excitation patterns at the most influent frequency on the acoustic noise level. One of those components is the axial excitation along spindle, and the other is the local orbital excitation at contact area of motor flange and base. To make a reduction of those structural transmission excitations, the structure of spindle motor is modified to the direction of reinforcement at transmission path without change of bearings, magnet and coil. Some excitation of spindle motor component carrying out essential function is unavoidable. So it is the efficient way of HDD noise improvement to control the structural transmission of excitation.

  • Mechanical systems installed in transport devices, such as vehicles, airplanes, and ships, are mostly subject to translational accelerations at the joints during operations. This base acceleration excitation has a large influence on the performance of the system, therefore, its response must be well analyzed. However, the existing methods for dynamic analysis of structures have some limitations in use. This study presents a new numerical method using relative acceleration to solve these limitations. If the governing equation of motion is linear and the mass matrix, the damping matrix, and the stiffness matrix are constant over time in the finite element analysis, the proposed method can be applied to the transient behavior analysis and the harmonic response analysis of the structure. Because it is not necessary to introduce a virtual mass and the rigid body motions are removed from the analysis, it is possible to use not only the direct integration method in the time domain but also the mode superposition method to obtain the dynamic responses. This paper demonstrates with three examples how the present method is suitable for the dynamic analysis of a structure with multi-degree of freedom.

  • Many automated welding equipment are used in the industry. However, there are some problems to get quality welds because of the geometric error, thermal distortion, and incorrect joint fit-up. These factors can make the gap between base plates in case of a thick plate welding. The welding product with the quality welds can not be obtained without consideration of the gap. In this paper, the robot path and welding conditions are modified to get the quality weld by detecting the position and size of the gap. In this work, a low-priced laser range sensor is used. The 3-dimensional information is obtained using the motion of a robot, which holds a laser range sensor. The position and size of the gap is calculated using signal processing of the measured 3-dimensional information of joint profile geometry. The data measured by a laser range sensor is segmented by an iterative end point method. The segmented data is optimized by the least square method. The existence of gap is detected by comparing the data with the segmented shape of template. The effects of robot measuring speed and gap size are also tested. The recognizability fo the gap is verified as good by comparing the real joint profile and the calculated joint profile using the signal processing.

  • This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts the vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.

  • Various centrifuge model tests on the pile foundations were performed to investigate fundamental characteristics of a pile-soil-foundation system recently, but it is hard to find numerical analysis results of a pile foundation system considering the nonlinear behavior of soil layers due to the dynamic excitations. Numerical analyses for a pile-soil system were carried out to verify the experimental results of centrifuge model tests. Centrifuge model tests were performed at the laboratory applying 1.5 Hz sinusoidal base input motions, and nonlinear numerical analyses were performed utilizing a finite element program of P3DASS in the frequency domain and applying the same input motions with the intensities of 0.05 g~0.38 g. Nonlinear soil properties of soil elements were defined by Ramberg-Osgood soil model for the nonlinear dynamic analyses. Nonlinear numerical analyses with the P3DASS program were helpful to predict the trend of experimental responses of a centrifuge model efficiently, even though there were some difficulties in processing analytical results and to find out unintended deficits in measured experimental data. Also nonlinear soil properties of elements in the system can be estimated adequately using an analytical program to compare them with experimental results.

  • Three-dimensional trajectory of fluid particle is simulated by a particle motion, which is able to examine the influences of changes in the several parameters. To calculate the trajectory of a particle, the Runge-Kutta method was utilized. The use of a projectile of particles for the trajectory of liquid jet has been shown to be useful to estimate the influence of different operating parameters such as best particle diameter, density of liquid body, initial take-off velocity, wind velocity, cross wind velocity, take-off angle, and base angle for a released flow from the nozzle. The results give the trajectories of various types of particle of body and at different elevations, base angles, wind velocities and densities of liquid body. The trajectories in a vacuum show that air resistances decreases both the distance and the maximum height of a projectile, and also explain that the termination time is also reduced in air. In addition, the maximum distance in the x direction was obtained with take-off angles from 30 degrees to 45 degrees in still air and the projectile of particles was highly effected by wind and cross wind. Clearly, a particle has to be so positioned as to take the optimum possible advantage of the wind if the maximum distances is requested. The wind astern increased the maximum distances of x direction compared with the wind ahead. Finally, it is possible to optimize the design of pump by using these results.

  • The current study compares the effect of structure-soil-structure interaction (SSSI) on the dynamic responses of adjacent buildings and isolated structures including soil-structure interaction (SSI) with the responses of fixed-base structures. Structural responses such as the relative acceleration, displacement, drift and shear force were considered under earthquake ground motion excitation. For this purpose, 5-, 10- and 15-story structures with 2-bay moment resisting frames resting on shallow foundations were modeled as a group of buildings in soft soil media. Viscous lateral boundaries and interface elements were applied to the soil model to simulate semi-infinite soil media, frictional contact and probable slip under seismic excitation. The direct method was employed for fully nonlinear time-history dynamic analysis in OpenSees using 3D finite element soil-structure models with different building positions. The results showed that the responses of the grouped structures were strongly influenced by the adjacent structures. The responses were as much as 4 times greater for drift and 2.3 times greater for shear force than the responses of fixed-base models.

  • A 51-year-old male who is right-handed visited the outpatient for right fingers-drop. The patient's fingers, including thumb, were not extended on metacarpophalangeal joint. The active motion of the right wrist was available. The electromyography and nerve conduction velocity study were consistent with the posterior interosseous neuropathy. Further evaluation was done with the magnetic resonance imaging for finding the space-occupying lesion or any possible soft tissue lesion around the radial nerve pathway. On magnetic resonance imaging, the ganglion cyst, which was about 1.8 cm in diameter, was observed on the proximal part of the superficial layer of the supinator muscle (Arcade of Frohse). The surgical excision was done on the base of ganglion cyst at the base of stalk of cyst which looked to be connected with proximal radioulnar joint capsule. The palsy had completely resolved when the patient was observed on the outpatient department a month after the operation.

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests were performed to evaluate the seismic response of multi-DOF structures with shallow foundations. Also, elastic time history analysis on the fixed-base model was performed and compared with the experimental results. As a result of the centrifuge model test, earthquake amplification at the fundamental vibration frequency of the soil (= 2.44 Hz) affected the third vibration mode frequency (= 2.50 Hz) of the long-period structure and the first vibration mode (= 2.27 Hz) of the short-period structure. The shallow foundation lengthened the periods of the structures by 14-20% compared to the fixed base condition. The response spectrum of acceleration measured at the shallow foundation was smaller than that of free-field motion due to the foundation damping effect. The ultimate moment capacity of the soil-foundation system limited the dynamic responses of the multi-DOF structures. Therefore, the considerations on period lengthening, foundation damping, and ultimate moment capacity of the soil-foundation system might improve the seismic design of the multi-DOF building structures.
