  • A piezoelectric flextentional sonar transducer has been simulated using a coupled FE-BEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state displacement modes, underwater directivity patterns, resonant frequencies, bandwidths, quality factors, output acoustic powers and transmitting voltage responses. It is shown that the present barrel-stave sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material produces flextentional displacements which could be related with higher output power, lower quality factor and more omnidirectional beam pattern than other types of sonar transducers. The results of the present sonar transducer modelling are also compared with those of a commercial package such as ATILA.

  • The present study covers the optimal design for a lens module in a mobile phone camera by using the design of experiments (DOE) and finite element (FE) analysis. FE analyses are performed to investigate the effect of design parameters on the amount of torque required to assemble a barrel and a housing part. The DOE approach is then performed to optimize the design parameters in order to maintain an appropriate torque with less variations.

  • Additive manufacturing (AM), so called 3D Printing is a new manufacturing process and is getting attraction from many industries. There are several methods of 3D printing. Among them fused deposition modeling (FDM) type is most widely used by reason of cheap maintenance, easy operation and variety of polymeric materials. Articles manufactured by 3D printing have weak deposition strength compared with conventionally manufactured products. Deposition strength of FDM type 3D printed article is highly dependent of deposition temperature. Subsequently the nozzle temperature in the FDM type 3D printing is very important and it is controlled by heat source in the 3D printer. Nozzle is connected with heat block and barrel, and heat block contains heat source. Nozzle becomes hot through heat conduction from heat source. Nozzle temperature has been predicted for various thermal boundary conditions by computer simulation and compared with experimental measurement. Nozzle temperature highly depends upon thermal conductivities of heat block and nozzle. Simulation results are good agreement with experiment.

  • Rifling force has a torsion impulse effect on the gun tube and thus generates undesirable vibration of the gun tube about its bore axis, putting additional stress on the projectile. High rifling force at the muzzle of the gun tube may adversely influence the trajectory of the projectile. And, the service life of rifled gun barrels is known to depend on the rifling force. Rifling force along the path of the projectile in the longitudinal direction of the gun tube can be described with projectile mass, projectile velocity, gas pressure curve and rifling angle. Under the same conditions, the character of the rifling of the gun barrel decisively influences the rifling force curve. To reduce the above mentioned harmful effect, locally distinct maximum of rifling force has to be avoided and maximum rifling force needs to be minimized. The best way to minimize the maximum rifling force is to design a rifling angle function so that the rifling force curve has a near trapezoidal shape. In this paper a new approach to make the optimal rifling force curve is described. The rifling angle determining the rifling force is developed by combined Fourier series and polynomial function to satisfy both the convergence and boundary condition matching problems.

  • NIRS (Near-infrared spectroscopy) is a relatively, new, non-invasive, and non-ionizing method of measuring hemodynamic responses in thick biological tissues such as the cerebral cortex. In this study, we measured the hemodynamic responses of the rat barrel cortex to whisker stimulation by using a frequency-domain NIRS system. We designed multiple optical probes comprising multi-mode optical fibers and manipulating arms, both of which can be easily applied to small animals. Various electrical stimulations were applied to rat whiskers at different voltage levels and stimulation frequencies. Our results show that the hemodynamic responses are highly dependent on the stimulation voltage level, and not so much on stimulation frequency. This paper suggests that NIRS technology is highly suitable for the study of small animal brains.

  • The best plan to reduce the building energy consumption is that the insulation performance should be improved because the insulation and airtight of building envelopes have an effect on the energy consumption basically. New insulation materials, which have the high performance and are above insulation standard, have been developed steadily. Because there are not studies on the building energy rating system and economic evaluation considering new insulation materials, these matters should be studied. In result alternatives, which applied 6 high performance material each, reduce the annual heating energy and raise the building energy rating. Applying the vacuum insulation material(Case 1, 2) and vacuum or triple glazing can retrieves the investment with $120 and $140$\sim$150 per barrel each.

  • Helical magneto-cumulative generator(HMCG)s are very useful devices in suppling pulsed high current to inductance loads. To apply fast high voltage pulses to high impedance loads, high current outputs of HMCGs are required to be conditioned to higher voltages by using various pulse components such as opening/closing switches and pulse transformer. In this paper, stepping with the trends of requirements for ever-increasing energy in pulsed power applications coupling methods is investigated to obtain higher output energy by connecting several HMCGs in series or parallel way. The coil dimension of HMCGs used in series or parallel connections was 50 mm in diameter and 150 mm in length. The coil was fabricated by using enamel-coated copper wire of 1 mm in diameter. The highest energy amplification ratio and peak voltage of load were achieved from the serially connected four-barrel HMCG system. They were 68 and 34 kV, respectively, when the initial energy of 0.36 kJ was supplied into that system with the load of 0.4 μH. Within the tested range of inductance ratio, energy amplification ratio was found to be highly dependent on the inductance ratio of serial- and parallel-connected HMCG systems to load, which to be optimal around 500 was turned out. The experimental results showed that the output energy and voltage of load are controlled by connecting HMCGs in series or parallel.

  • A piezoelectric flextentional deep-water sonar transducer has been designed using a coupled FE-HEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state frequency response for TX displacement modes, directivity patterns, resonance frequencies, TVRs. While the conventional barrel-stave typed sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material is designed, the external surface of the transducer is modified in order to allow the same hydrostatic pressure to be applied onto the inner and the outer surfaces of the transducer. With this modification for deep-water application, a new resonance mode is generated at lower frequency. This lower resonance mode can be adjusted according to the degree of the outer surface modification.

  • In this paper, supersonic jets impinging on axisymmetric cone were investigated to obtain fundamental design data for jet deflector case of example being VTOL/STOL or rocket launch. It was of interest to study flow phenomena such as shock interactions and separation induced by shear layer. Experiments were conducted to obtain schlieren flow visualization and measurement of surface pressure. Numerical results are compared with the experimental result. The dominant feature of the flow is the shock pattern induced by the interaction between the cone shock and the barrel shock. This pattern can take a wide variety of forms depending on the structure of the free jet and strongly influences the form of the surface pressure distributions.
