  • Among the 308 breeding pigs imported via airway from Canada, 15 pigs died from the respiratory disease. Three of the carcases were examined by pathological and bacteriological means. In the lungs of the necropsied cases there was a lobar pleuropneumonia characterized by parenchymal hepatization, carnification and extensive adhesion between the thoracic organs due to fibrinous pleural thickening. Histologically the affected lungs had lesions of thrombosis and coalesced area of necrosis delineated by packed macrophages. A strain of Haemophilus Pleuropneumoniae was isolated from the affected lungs. The isolate was serologically identified as serotype 5.

  • A new bacterial disease was found on trees of peach(Prunus persica var. vulgaris Max) at Kumho Kyungbuk in April 1999. The disease usually occured on over wintered buds branchs and stems of the Cheon-Hong cultivar. The buds died without sprouting and the branches showed entire wilting Droplets of bacterial ooze was occasionally running down the surface of diseased plants under moist condition. Artificial needle prick inoculation with isolates obtained from branchs of naturally infected plants produced symptoms similar to those occuring under natural condition. On the basis of bacteriological characteristics and pathogenicity on the host plant of the organism the causal bacterium was identified as Xanthomonas arboricora pv. pruni and this disease was proposed to name "Bacterial branch blight of the peach tree"

  • Soft rot symptom was observed on lily bulb in the fields and at a low temperature storage house from 1999 to 2000 in Korea. The small dark-brown lesion appeared on the bulb, and enlarged and developed into the inner scales of the bulb. The bulb became water soaked and gave out unpleasant odor. Two different pathogenic bacteria were isolated from infected tissues. The causal bacteria were identified as Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora) and Pseudomonas marginalis based on bacteriological characteristics. Pathogenicity of the bacteria was proven by Koch's postulations. This is the first report of bacterial soft rot of lily bulb in Korea caused by the two bacteria.

  • A bacterial disease of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) that rooted the stem nodes to black was found in pepper plants which cultivated in plastic house at Chungdo, Kyungpook, Korea in March, 1998. Bacterial isolates derived from the diseased peppers were pathogenic to potato, eggplant and Chinese cabbage but, was not pathogenic to chrysanthemum by artificial inoculation. On the basis of bacteriological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the causal organism of the node soft rot of pepper is identified as Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and the name of disease is proposed as bacterial node soft rot of pepper.

  • We studied on the effect of faucet cleanliness, faucet conditions (screen, mixing faucet), and flushing time for bacterial detection in tap water. As results, tap water should be left to run to waste for 2 to 3 minutes and if a questionable cleanliness is questionable, disinfect the faucet by using flaming or other methods before sampling. We proposed sampling method to decrease effect of factors associated with bacterial detection in tap water and contributed to be evaluated more accurate water quality.

  • The specimens were collected from 89 diarrheal patients who had visited Pusan National University Hospital from June to September 1985. They were cultured and tested for the bacteriological identification of causative agents. In this study we identified 5 strains of Salmonella species, 5 strains of Shigella species, 2 strains of Y. enterocolitica, and 17 strains of enteric pathogenic E. coli. Enteric pathogenic E. coli were classified into enterotoxigenic E. coli, enteropathogenic E. coli, and enteroinvasive E. coli by serological type. We tried to isolate V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus too but we cannot find them out.

  • The results of re-examination for the isolates D-28, D-28a from Kimchi and 88-3 from laver are summarized as follows: 1). All these isolates were proved to be Gram positive, catalase positive and spore-forming. 2). While these strains were not consistent with Bacillus megaterium group with respect to Voges-Proskauer reaction and methyl red test, their cultural characteristics were well consistent with this group. 3). These isolates showed the similar suger-fermentability as B. megaterium group with a slight difference. 4). It is proved that, according to the forgoing results and vitamin $B_{12}$ producibility, the isolate 88-3 is identical with B. megaterium NRRL-B 938 and D-28, D-28a, with B. megaterium 425-1 and 425-2, respectively.

  • The incidence of contamination of epidural catheters used for pain control was investigated. To prevent epidural infection, all patients with epidural catheters had taken amoxacillin 1.5gm/day orally. Of the cultures of catheters catched from 303 patients undergoing continuous epidrual catheterization, 5 catheters (1.7%) were found to be contaminated; cervical 1/86 (1.2%), thoracic 1/27 (3.7%), and lumbar 3/190 (1.6%). Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most common etiologic agent (60%). To prevent epidural infection, sterilization of the skin around the epidural catheter and prophylactic use of broad-spectrum antibiotics are thought to be beneficial.

  • Continuous epidural analgesia is widely used in pain management. We investigates the incidence of contamination of epidural catheters used in epidural catheters for pain control. The tips of epidural catheters were examined for bacterial growth after use. In culture from 250 patients undergoing continuous epidural catheterization, 33(13.2%) catheters were found to be contaminated: staphylococcus epidermis 66.9%; staphylococcus aureus 12.1%; alpha streptococcus 12.1%; and others 9.1%. One significant epidural infection occured. One of the most common causes of the epidural infection during long time epidural block is the transmission of the microorganism from the contaminated skin to the epidural space along the epidural catheter. To prevent epidural infection, sterilization of the skin around the epidural catheter is essential.
