To improve methods of screening rice cultivars with field resistance to bacterial leaf blight, testing plant inoculation and neighbor plant inoculation were compared by using 33 rice cultivars. In the testing plant inoculation method, field resistance was evaluated by measuring the leaf areas diseased on the new leaves expanded after the inoculation. Varietal differences in field resistance were recognized more clearly by the testing plant inoculation method than by the neighbor plant inoculation method. Highly significant correlation was observed between the results of the two methods. Some rice cultivars such as, Seomjin, Hangangchal, Taebaeg, Samgang, Milyang 42, Asominori, Java 14, Chugoku 45 and 70X-46 showed remarkable field resistance to bacterial leaf blight. The testing plant inoculation method appeared desirable for screening rice cultivars for the qualitative and field resistance to bacterial leaf blight because of using less labor and less field area than neighbor plant inoculation.
In order to investigate the relationship among the occurrence of bacterial leaf blight, amount of nitrogen application and planting density, a field experiment was carried out with factorial combinations of N levels (7.5, 15, 30kg/10a) and planting densities (10\times20,\;15\times30,\;20\times40cm). The results obtained in this study were; (1) The incidence of bacterial leaf blight was increased with increase of nitrogen application; (2) In double amount of nitrogen application (30kg/10a), the incidence of bacterial leaf blight was higher, regardless of planting density; (3) The incidence of bacterial leaf blight in Standard nitrogen application was significantly higher $(R=0.94^{**})$ than at $15\times30cm$ density and $20\times40cm$ planting density.
Near-isogenic lines (NILs) carrying bacterial blight resistance genes (Xa4, xa5 and Xa21) were developed in japonica rice using Suweon345 as genetic background. NILs were selected by gene specific DNA markers and inoculation of K1 or K3a race. NILs conferring Xa4 were resistant to K1, K2, K3, and moderately resistant to K3a. NILs conferring xa5 were resistant to K1, K2, K3, and K3a. NILs having Xa21 were susceptible to K1, while resistant to K2, K3 and K3a. Target genes of NILs with the genetic background of Suweon345 were also confirmed by using eleven Philippines races and International Rice Bacterial Blight (IRBB) NILs carrying Xa4, xa5 and Xa21. All NILs had no significant difference from their recurrent parents in the major agronomic traits except for panicle length and brown rice 1,000 grain weight. Heading date of NILs ranged from Aug. 10 to Aug. 11, which was similar to that of recurrent parent, Suweon345. Culm length, number of grains per panicle and ratio of ripened grain of NILs were similar to those of Suweon345. Milled rice of NILs was ranged from 4.82 to 4.93MT/ha. These NILs will be useful for improving resistance to K3a race of bacterial blight pathogens in Korean japonica cultivars.
The inheritance of resistance to bacterial blight in a Tongil-type rice cultivar 'Changseongbyeo' was studied using a Korean isolate HB9101. which belongs to race $K_1$. The resistance of Changseongbyeo to the HB9101 was controlled by a single dominant gene. This gene was allelic with Xa-1 gene and linked to Ig gene on chromosome 4 with the recombination value of 7.5%.
A microbial product composed of three antagonistic fungal isolates (Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp. and Trichoderma sp.) and three bacterial isolates (Arthrobacter sp., Bacillus sp., and Pseudomonas sp.) was tested for the control of Pythium blight caused by Pythium sp., brown patch by Rhizoctonia solani (anastomosis group(AG) 1-1) and large patch by R. solani (AG 2-2) of turfgrasses. Cultures of the antagonistic fungi and bacteria varied in the effectiveness in reducing disease severity of Pytium blight and brown patch on bentgrass. The antagonistic fungal and bacterial isolates were mixed and cultured at 20-$25^{\circ}C$ for 3 days in a growth medium, and the diluted solution of the microbial culture was applied under the field conditions after inoculation of the above turfgrass pathogens. The treated turfgrass was incubated at 28$^{\circ}C$ in a growth chamber. In this experiment, Pythium blight was almost completely controlled and brown patch was slightly decreased by the microbial product, while no control was observed in large patch of zoysiagrass. In zoysiagrass treated with the microbial culture, thatch accumulation was notably reduced.
To investigate the forecasting of plant disease and insect for an agricultural complex and farm in environment-friendly cultivation of Rice, environment-friendly agricultural five complexs and five farms were selected in Youngam and Naju area, Jonnam, Korea. Preventation objects of plant disease and insect were leaf blast, neck blast, sheath blight, bacterial leaf blight, and hopper. Factors of sheath blight occurrence in environment-friendly agricultural complex were a fast transplanting time and a narrow planting density. Bacterial leaf blight in rice occurred severely in the area under water. Rice growth in environment-friendly agricultural complex was decreased heavy drying by hopper appearance.

A new bacterial disease of sesame(Sesamum indicum) was observed on field-grown plants in Suwon, Hongchun and Yeonchun in 2000. Leaf symptoms initially appeared as water-soaked spots that gradually enlarged, became necrotic and were often bordered by a small zone of lemon yellow tissue. In the case of severe infection, dead leaves were defoliated. Isolations made from diseased leaves on yeast extract dextrose calcium carbonate agar yielded nearly pure cultures of a yellow-pigmented bacterium typical of a xanthomonad. Two bacterial strains were purified and used for farther tests. Pathogenicity of strains was confirmed on 3-week-old sesame plants sprayed with bacterial suspensions containing $10^{8}cfu/ml$ of phosphate buffered saline. The Biolog and fatty acid analyses of the two strains(SL3451 and SL3476) 1mm sesame leaf blight showed that they could be identified as ft campestris pv. sesami because of their high similarity to the tester strain(X. campestris pv. sesami LMG865) with a match probability of $100\%$. The bacterium grew well between 18 and 36$^{\circ}C$, but optimum temperature was $27^{\circ}C$ on LB broth. This is the first report of bacterial blight of sesame in Korea. Symptoms of bacterial blight of sesame are difficult to differentiated with those of bacterial leaf spot caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. sesami.

Bacterial leaf blight caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. porri is one of the major bacterial diseases of garlic (Allium sativum). In South Korea, the disease has only been observed in garlic-growing regions of Jeju island. The spatial distribution pattern of the disease was analyzed by binary power law, in which the natural logarithm of the observed variance is regressed on the natural logarithm of the binomial variance. The estimated slope (b=1.361) of the regression was greater than 1 which meant that the diseased plants were aggregated. The sequential sampling plans were developed for estimating the mean incidence rate ($p_m$) and classifying the mean incidence as being below or above the critical incidence rate ($p_t$). These results could be used on more efficient and higher precisive sampling for bacterial blight of garlic compared to fixed sample sized sampling.
Erwinia amylovora and Erwinia pyrifoliae cause fire blight and black-shoot blight, respectively, in apples and pears. E. pyrifoliae is less pathogenic and has a narrower host range than that of E. amylovora. Fire blight and black-shoot blight exhibit similar symptoms, making it difficult to distinguish one bacterial disease from the other. Molecular tools that differentiate fire blight from black-shoot blight could guide in the implementation of appropriate management strategies to control both diseases. In this study, a primer set was developed to detect and distinguish E. amylovora from E. pyrifoliae by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The primers produced amplicons of different sizes that were specific to each bacterial species. PCR products from E. amylovora and E. pyrifoliae cells at concentrations of 104 cfu/ml and 107 cfu/ml, respectively, were amplified, which demonstrated sufficient primer detection sensitivity. This primer set provides a simple molecular tool to distinguish between two types of bacterial diseases with similar symptoms.
In recent years, the occurrence of bacterial diseases of soybean has been increasing due to the continuous rise in spring temperature and the humid weather as a result of rain concentrated at the middle and late stages of crop growth. The resulting severe economic damage is also a concern. Unfortunately, there are no precise data on the occurrence and damage to lay the foundation for bacterial disease control in soybean in the Chungbuk Province. Therefore, the present study investigated the occurrence of major bacterial diseases, namely bacterial pustules, bacterial blight, and wildfire, in different soybean varieties in 410 fields in the Chungbuk Province in 2017. The incidence rate of bacterial pustules in the affected fields was 76.6%, and the incidence rate of infected plants was 29.3%. The incidence rate of bacterial blight in the affected fields was 13.9%, and the incidence rate of infected plants was 4.6%. The incidence rate of wildfire in the affected fields was 23.2%, and the incidence rate of infected plants was 10.1%. The overall incidence rate of bacterial diseases in the soybean fields where the diseases originated was 37.9% for bacterial pustules, 21.0% for bacterial blight, and 25.0% for wildfire, indicating that the disease incidence rate in fields where the disease originated was generally high. Among different varieties, the incidence rate of bacterial pustules was the highest in sprout soybean (88.9%), followed by Seoritae (84.0%) and Daewon (81.2%). The incidence rate of bacterial blight was the highest in the Daewon (19.6%), followed by Seoritae (15.2%) and sprout soybean (12.5%). The incidence rate of wildfire was the highest in sprout soybean (25.0%), followed by Daewon (24.7%) and Seoritae (5.4%). Meanwhile, in Uram, the incidence rate of bacterial pustules (7.1%) was the lowest, and this variety was not affected by bacterial blight or wildfire.
