In order to obtain bacterial metabolites inducing disease resistance in pepper plant, two hundred bacterial isolates were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tobacco, cucumber, and pepper plant. Ethyl acetate extract of each bacterial culture was used to screening for induction of resistance against phytophthora blight of pepper plant. Application of ethyl acetate extract of an isolate SH122 culture to pepper plant conferred resistance against phytophthora blight consistently and significantly. According to cellular fatty acid analysis and other characteristics, the SH122 culture were significantly lower than those on control plants treated with ethyl acetate extract of nutrient broth. The B. pumilus SH122 itself of ethyl acetate extract of its culture did not show antifungal activity against phytophthora blight in pepper plants.
To improve methods of screening rice cultivars with field resistance to bacterial leaf blight, testing plant inoculation and neighbor plant inoculation were compared by using 33 rice cultivars. In the testing plant inoculation method, field resistance was evaluated by measuring the leaf areas diseased on the new leaves expanded after the inoculation. Varietal differences in field resistance were recognized more clearly by the testing plant inoculation method than by the neighbor plant inoculation method. Highly significant correlation was observed between the results of the two methods. Some rice cultivars such as, Seomjin, Hangangchal, Taebaeg, Samgang, Milyang 42, Asominori, Java 14, Chugoku 45 and 70X-46 showed remarkable field resistance to bacterial leaf blight. The testing plant inoculation method appeared desirable for screening rice cultivars for the qualitative and field resistance to bacterial leaf blight because of using less labor and less field area than neighbor plant inoculation.
This study was conducted to determine the inheritance to bacterial leaf blight in rice. Varieties used in the study were IR1544-349-2, IR1698-237-2, IR1529-680-3, IR28, IR29, RP663-337-7-8-4-1-1, RP291-20, 62-595 and Kele. The isolate of bacteial leaf blight used was 71-23, 76-1 of Xanthomonas oryzae. $F_1s$ were obtained from crosses between resistant and susceptible varieties. Field observation was made from the Parents, $F_1s$ and $F_2$ sagregating population. The result is summaryzed as fallow: 1) The resistance to the bacterial leaf blight (71-23) derived from cultivars IR1529-680-3, IR28, IR29, RP663-337-7-8-4-1-1, RP291-20 and 62-595 was controlled by a single dominant gene. 2) The resistance to the bacterial leaf blight (71-23) derived from cultivars IR1545-339-2, IR1544-340, IR1698-237-2 and Kele was controlled by a single recessive gene. 3) The resistance to the bacterial leaf blight (76-1) derived from cultivars IR1545-339-2, IR1544-340, IR 1698-237-2 was controlled by a single dominant gene. 4) Degree of resistance to the bacterial leaf blight and genetic type were different depending on isolates within the same resistant cultivar. 5) There was no relation between resistance to the bacterial leaf blight and heading days.
Bacterial blight(BB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae(Xoo) is one of the most economically destructive bacterial diseases of rice in worldwide. Utilization of resistant cultivars carrying resistant gene(s) is relatively an effect method to control this disease. About 34 resistant genes for BB resistance have been identified in many countries. Among them, Xa1 and Xa3 genes against bacterial blight have been incorporated into improved korean japonica rice varieties. Now, Ilmi carrying Xa1 gene and severial cultivars carrying Xa3 gene are widely grown in our country. In recent year, xa5, Xa21 and Xa23 genes are using in rice breeding programs for japonica resistant cultivars to bacterial blight. Resistant cultivars incorporated with a diverse single gene and two, three, or the more major gene necessite in the future.
The inheritance of resistance to bacterial blight in a Tongil-type rice cultivar 'Changseongbyeo' was studied using a Korean isolate HB9101. which belongs to race $K_1$. The resistance of Changseongbyeo to the HB9101 was controlled by a single dominant gene. This gene was allelic with Xa-1 gene and linked to Ig gene on chromosome 4 with the recombination value of 7.5%.
In an effort to breed lines resistant to both bacterial wilt and Phytophthora blight, F5 and BC1F4, and F6 and BC1F5 generations of the crosses between the lines previously bred for resistance to Phytophthora blight ((16-2-2-3-2 = Phytophthora-resistant 'Kalmi', 19-1-3-7-1-1, 19-2-4-5-3-2 = Phytophthora-resistant 'Subi', Kim et al., 1996) and sources of resistance to bacterial wilt (KC350 = MC-4 or KC353 = PBC631, Kim et al., 1998) were evaluated for resistance to both bacterial wilt and to Phytophthora blight in 1999 and in 2000, respectively. Plants which were highly resistant to both bacterial wilt and Phytophthora blight were selected for development of the next generations.
'Manbaek' is a bacterial blight resistant mid-late maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality. 'Manbeak' was derived from anther culture using the backcross combination, $Hopum^*2/SR30075$. 'Hopum' is a mid-late maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality and 'SR30075' is a pyramid line carrying three bacterial blight resistance genes. 'Manbaek' was selected through the pedigree method, yield trials, and local adaptability tests. 'Manbeak' carrying two bacterial blight resistance gene Xa3 and xa5 showed high-level and broad-spectrum resistance against bacterial blight. 'Manbaek' was resistant to K3a, mostly virulent race in Korea, and exhibited resistance reaction against 16 Korean bacterial blight isolates. 'Manbaek' was a mid-late maturing rice. The heading date of 'Manbaek' was August 19th, which was 5 days later than that of 'Nampyeong'. Manbaek' was a lodging-tolerant rice with short culm and dark green leaf. Due to the low viviparous germination, 'Manbaek' could be a useful material to prevent pre-harvest sprouting. 'Mabeak' was resistant to bacterial blight and rice stripe virus, but susceptible to other virus diseases and insect pests. The yield of 'Manbaek' was similar to 'Nampyeong'. 'Manbaek' showed excellent grain appearance and good tastes of cooked rice, so that it could contribute to improving the quality of bacterial blight resistant cultivars. 'Manbaek', bacterial blight resistant cultivar with high grain quality, is suitable for the cultivation at bacterial blight prone area and has been utilized in the breeding programs for enhancing the resistance against bacterial blight (Registration No. 6069).
This experiment was conducted to study the multiplication and spread of bacterial population in water exuded through the hydathode of infected leaf of Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae in resistant and susceptible rice cultivars to bacterial leaf blight. The results obtained are summarized as follows. The bacterial multiplication in resistant cultivars was almost constant from three days to twelve days after inoculation with population of 10$^3$-10$^4$cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$, but the multiplication was increased as days after inoculation extended in susceptible cultivars. The speed of bacterial multiplication and the number of bacteria spread above and below the inoculated position were closely related with the resistance of rice cultivars to bacterial leaf blight. The bacterial multiplication and spread were observed throughout the all growing stages including seedling, maximum tillering and flag leaf stages. The bacterial populations in water exuded through the hydathode were dependent on the multiplication and spread, and the populations were also closely related with the resistance of rice cultivars.
The gene analysis of resistance in rice cultivars, Daeanbyeo, Hwasunchalbyeo, Daejinbyeo, Naepungbyeo, Hwajinbyeo and Surabyeo to strains of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae was studied. F$_1$ plants and F$_2$ populations from the crosses between six cultivars and near isogenic lines carrying the single bacterial blight(BB) resistance gene were analyzed using Korean and Japanese BB races. Daeanbyeo, Hwasunchalbyeo, Daejinbyeo, Naepungbyeo, Hwajinbyeo and Surabyeo are alleic with IRBB101 but are non-alleic with IRBB104 and IRBB105. The allelic tests indicated that Daeanbyeo, Hwasunchalbyeo, Daejinbyeo, Naepungbyeo, Hwajinbyeo and Surabyeo have the Xal gene for resistance.

A molecular survey was conducted to identify the presence of the bacterial blight resistance genes (Xa1, Xa4, xa5, xa13 and Xa21) in 86 accessions of aromatic rice obtained from germplasm. The results revealed that the resistance gene Xa4 (32.5%), Xa21 (17%), and xa5 (16%) were widely observed in tested rice germplasm. Among tested rice germplasm, 49 accessions showed the presence of more than one of five R genes, and 37 accessions possessed none of the R gene. TALLi and 05-IRRi-M-46 showed the presence of Xa4, xa5, xa13 and Xa21. Rice race $415{\times}Ir352$ exhibited positive amplicon for the Xa1, Xa4, xa5 and Xa21. Hyangmibyeo1hos, Ir841-85-1-1-2 and Jasmine85 showed the positive amplicon for the Xa1, Xa4 and xa5 genes. Yekywin Yinkya Hmwe and Khao Dawk Mali105 showed the presence of Xa1, Xa4 and Xa21 gene. Masino Basmati showed the presence of xa5, xa13, Xa21 genes. Xa1 and Xa21 genes were noticed in Mihayngbyeo, Tarana Deshi, Mayataung and AZUCENA. Hyangmibyeo2ho, Basmati 6311 and Basmati405 possessed only two R genes such as Xa4 and xa5, and xa5 and xa13, respectively. The evaluation results of bacterial blight resistance genes in aromatic rice germplasm will help in breeding of multi disease resistant varieties.
