  • Current in-situ airborne probes that measure the sizes of ice crystals smaller than 50 ㎛ are based on the concept that the measured intensity of light scattered by a particle in the forward and/or backward direction can be converted to particle size. The relationship between particle size and scattered light used in forward scattering probes is based on Mie theory, which assumes the refractive index of particle is known and all particles are spherical. Not only are small crystals not spherical, but also there are a wide variety of non-spherical shapes. Although it is well known that the scattering properties of non-spherical ice crystals differ from those of spherical shapes, the impacts of non-sphericity on derived in-situ particle size distributions are unknown. Thus, precise relationships between the intensity of scattered light and particle size and shape are required, as based on accurate calculations of scattering properties of ice crystals. In this study, single-scattering properties of ice crystals smaller than 50 ㎛ are calculated at a wavelength of 0.55 ㎛ using a numerically exact method (i.e., discrete dipole approximation). For these calculations, hexagonal ice crystals with varying aspect ratios are used to represent the shapes of natural small ice crystals to determine the errors caused by non-spherical ice crystals measured by forward scattering probes. It is shown that the calculated errors in sizing nonspherical ice crystals are at least 13% and 26% in forward (4~12°) and backward (168~176°) directions, respectively, and maximum errors are up to 120% and 132%.

  • In this paper, an attempt has been made by incorporating variable wheel arrangement for a car-like robot. In this scheme, the car-like robot controls its body height and the length of forward and backward wheels while driving in omni-direction. Experimental results show that the proposed car-like robot with wheel arrangement variable structure presents effectiveness of several situations.(a. left and right turn, b. longitudinal and latitudinal parking, c. control of body height and the length of forward and backward wheels, d. passing over obstacles, e. adaptive cruise control.)

  • The problem of estimating the frequencies of multiple sinusoids from noisy measurements by using the modified linear prediction methods - Modified Forward-Backward Linear Prediction(MFBLP) and Model Reduction(MR) methods is addressed in this paper. The MFBLP and MR methods are derived by singular value decomposition and approximation of linear system. respectively. Monte Carlo simulations are done and the performances compared with linear prediction and forward-backward linear prediction. Simulations show a great promise for MFBLP and MR.

  • Hydraulic transmission is the main component delivering power to the drive wheels of an excavator during forward and backward movement, and it has low speed, high torque and high speed, low torque gear change ratios as a forward/backward two-speed main function. It also has additional function of ensuring that the excavator is stably fixed on the ground with the built-in parking brake during excavation operations. In this study, optimal design specifications are determined by modeling and simulating about the multi-disc-type friction clutch, which is the main component improving the reliability of the hydraulic transmission for a 14-ton wheel excavator, and the friction properties of the transmission clutch are analyzed by performing sample tests.

  • In this research TPS (Train Performance Simulation) blocks are designed using Simulink and applied to generate speed profiles for energy-efficient train operation. With a train operation mode of maximum powering, coasting, and maximum breaking, a breaking point is calculated from forward-backward running profiles. Then, GA (Genetic Algorithm) is used to solve a running time constraint, and a coasting point is produced from the searching process of GA. With the breaking point and the coasting point a speed profile is plotted. Train performance under a speed limit and gradient variations is simulated and resultant speed profiles are analyzed.

  • A UBET program is developed for determining flash the optimum sizes of preform and initial billet in plane-strain closed-die forging. The program consists of forward and backward tracing processes. In the forward program, flash, die filling and forging load are predicted. In backward tracing process the optimum dimensions of initial billet and preform are determined from the final-shape data based on flash design. Experiments are carried out with pure plasticine billets ar room temperature. The theoretical predictions of forging load and flow pattern are in good agree-ment with the experimental results.

  • A rotating rigid disk, attached on a flexible shaft or supported by a torsional spring, experiences precessional whirling due to gyroscopic moment loading. It is well known in rotor dynamics area that, as the rotational speed increases, the precessional mode of the rotating rigid disk starts splitting into two: forward and backward precessional modes. On the other hand, it is also well known in disk vibration area that a rotating flexible disk also shows another kind of mode splitting phenomenon due to the rotation, resulting in forward and backward traveling waves. When rotating multiple flexible disks are coupled in vibration with the supporting Flexible shaft, the associated mode splitting should be compatible with the two seemingly different vibration analysis methods. This paper investigates the possibility of fusing the precessional and traveling wave mode splittings so that the bending coupled disk vibrations in HDD spindle systems can be better understood.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine soft tissue and hardtissue changes following orthognathic surgery in patients with mandibular prognathism lateral cephalometric films were obtained immediate before surgery, 48 hours following surgery, and 6 months following surgery. 18 patients were selected (10 men, and 6 women) for this study, who had received orthognathic surgery. Statistical analysis for the each time interval differences were performed with the SPSS package The results were as follows, *In the cases of mandibular sagittal split osteotomy 1 LI point was moved backward (average 7.55mm) 48 hours following surgery. 6 months later, it was returned forward (average 1.1mm) Relapse rate was 14.6% 2 Pog was moved backward (average 8.3mm) 48 hours following surgery The ratio of horizontal change of soft tissue to hard tissue at pog is 0.95 1 *In the cases of maxillary Le-Fort I osteotomy & mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. 3. A point was moved forward (average 3.31mm) 48 hours following surgery. 6 months later, it was returned backward (average 0.31) Relapse rate was 9 4% 4 6 months later, the ratio of facial convexity angle change of soft tissue to hard tissue is 0.63 1.

  • In this paper, a general procedure to determine machine tool errors from the on-machine measurement (OMM) data is described. First, a parameterized error model of a machine tool is illustrated by approximating error components as linear function of axis positions, and a modified error model is proposed which includes backlash effects. To determine the unknown model coefficient vectors of the forward and backward error model, an artifact with 8 cutes is made and calibrated on CMM. Then, lower-left and upper-right cube corners are measured with a touch-trigger probe mounted on the machine tool spindle. Measured error data are used to determine the coefficient vectors. The positioning errors in the XY plane at the fixed z position are simulated for the forward and backward error model.

  • As a new medium for knowledge diffusion, E-Journal is expected to be a general type of scholarly communication. However, the techno - economic problems have hindered the advancement of the E-Journal. For the technical aspects, there are problems such as the standardization of document format, automatization of the document preparation, forward and backward link between documents. Also there are necessities for the support of the information infrastructure of digital library and information superhighway. For the economic domain, reengineering of total publishing cycle is considered and the new paradigm of peer review is analyzed. We pointed out that the main difficulties in the diffusion of E-Journal are on the promotion of service and technological advance, not the price and marketing strategy.
