A theoretical study is presented for the prediction of the scattering of obliquely incident plane acoustic wave by transversely isotropic cylindrical shells immersed in water. In dorder to illustrate the vailidity of the theory backscattering form functions are compared with the existing results for degenerated problems: the catterings by isotropic shell and transversely isotropic solid cylinder. The unidirectional fiber reinforced boron-aluminum composites are selected as a model of transversely isotropic materials having potential applications in practice. From the resonant scattering analysis of the partial backscattering form functions, the dispersion curves for fluid-borne Stoneley wave, guided wave along the shell, and the lowest three Lamb type waves can be found. The Lamb type dispersions are compared with those of the flat plate. The variation of anisotropy significantly affects the properties of circumferential waves. From these results, it can be possible to identify parametrically the material properties of anisotropic cylindrical targets.
Microwave polarimetric backscattering from a various types of grassland canopies has been analyzed by using the first-order radiative transfer theory in this paper. Leaves in the grassland are modeled by rectangular resistive sheets, which sizes (widths and lengths) and orientations (elevation and azimuth angles) are randomly distributed. Surface roughness and soil moisture of the ground plane under the grass canopy is considered in this computation. The backscattering coefficients of grasslands are computed for different radar parameters (angles, frequencies and Polarizations) as well as different canopy Parameters (size and orientation distributions of leaves, canopy depth, moisture contents of leaves and soil, rms height and correlation length of soil surface). A radar system for 15GHz has been fabricated and used for measurement of the scattering coefficient from a grass canopy. The computation result obtained by the scattering model for the grass canopy is compared with the measurements.

In this paper, we describe the results of various calculations performed for a design of the thickness gauges that use the gamma-ray backscattering method. The radiation source is assumed to be the $_{24}$1Am(60keV gamma-ray) and the detector is a single crystal scintillator in a cylindrical form. The source is located at the center of the detector with the collimator of a cylindrical shape. First, when gamma-rays are incident on a material with a constant angle, we compute the variations of the spectrum for the photons scattered into different angular intervals. Next, we compute for an optimal size for the collimator cylinder for a fixed detector size and an optimal distance from the detector to the material. Finally, we compute the number of observed photons for different thickness of two different materials, a plastic film and an Al foil.

Ion beam processing is one of the key technologies to realize mastless and resistless sub 50nm nano fabrication. Unwanted effects, however, may occur since an energetic ion can interact with a target surface in various ways. Depending on the ion energy, the interaction can be swelling, deposition, sputtering, re-deposition, implantation, damage, backscattering and nuclear reaction. Sputtering is the fundamental mechanisms in ion beam induced direct patterning. Re-deposition and backscattering are unwanted mechanisms to avoid. Therefore understanding of ion beam-solid interaction should be advanced for further ion beam related research. In this paper we simulate some important interaction mechanisms between energetic incident ions and solid surfaces and the results are compared with experimental data. The simulation results are agreed well with experimental data.
Microwave radar can penetrate cloud cover regardless of weather conditions and can be used day and night. Especially a ground-based polarimetric scatterometer has advantages of monitoring crop conditions continuously with full polarization and different frequencies. Kim et al. (2009) have measured backscattering coefficients of paddy rice using L-, C-, X-band scatterometer system with full polarization and various angles during the rice growth period and have revealed the necessity of near-continuous automatic measurement to eliminate the difficulties, inaccuracy and sparseness of data acquisitions arising from manual operation of the system. In this study, we constructed an X-band automatic scatterometer system, analyzed scattering characteristics of paddy rice from X-band scatterometer data and estimated rice growth parameter using backscattering coefficients in X-band. The system was installed inside a shelter in an experimental paddy field at the National Academy of Agricultural Science (NAAS) before rice transplanting. The scatterometer system consists of X-band antennas, HP8720D vector network analyzer, RF cables and personal computer that controls frequency, polarization and data storage. This system using automatically measures fully-polarimetric backscattering coefficients of rice crop every 10 minutes. The backscattering coefficients were calculated from the measured data at a fixed incidence angle of $45^{\circ}$ and with full polarization (HH, VV, HV, VH) by applying the radar equation and compared with rice growth data such as plant height, stem number, fresh dry weight and Leaf Area Index (LAI) that were collected at the same time of each rice growth parameter. We examined the temporal behaviour of the backscattering coefficients of the rice crop at X-band during rice growth period. The HH-, VV-polarization backscattering coefficients steadily increased toward panicle initiation stage, thereafter decreased and again increased in early-September. We analyzed the relationships between backscattering coefficients in X-band and plant parameters and predicted the rice growth parameters using backscattering coefficients. It was confirmed that X-band is sensitive to grain maturity at near harvesting season.

Because it is difficult to apply direct and optical detection techniques to sunken hazardous and noxious substances (HNS), effective acoustic detection techniques are required to detect sunken HNS in water. In this study, the possibility of acoustic detection of sunken HNS was investigated through backscattering signal measurement experiments using chloroform, a sunken HNS. After establishing a pool in an acrylic tank, backscattering signals were measured according to the presences or absence of chloroform by varying the grazing angle from 90° to 50° in 0.5° intervals using a pan&tilt system. A directional transducer transmitted and received sinusoidal signals with a frequency of 200 kHz and a pulse length of 25 ㎲ in a monostatic state. When chloroform was deposited, the received level of the backscattering signal at the interface between water and chloroform became low at a grazing angle of approximately 80° or smaller. Based on the backscattering signal results obtained at the interface between water and chloroform, the possibility of acoustic detection of sunken HNS was demonstrated.
We propose a wavelength allocation method for bidirectional transmission in a coarse wavelength division multiplexing channel. The method can be accommodated by assigning a different upstream wavelength from the downstream wavelength at room temperature to eliminate penalties induced by backscattering, including Rayleigh backscattering. We suggest a procedure to obtain the minimum wavelength difference.

A numerical algorithm for estimating precise backscattering coefficients of rice fields is proposed and its accuracy is verified in this paper. After a bunch of rice plants above water surface is modeled with a bunch of randomly oriented lossy dielectric bodies above an impedance surface and the equivalent volume currents of the lossy dielectrics are computed using the moment method. Then, the scattered fields of a rice field with many bunches are computed with a Monte Carlo method, and consequently the backscattering coefficient of the rice field is computed for various incidence angles and polarizations. Finally, the backscattering coefficient of a rice field is measured at 1.85 GHz using an R-band scatterometer system, and these experimental data are used to verify the numerical algorithm proposed in this paper. It is found that the numerical computation results agree well with the measurement data.
Acoustic experiments were performed with Zostera marina to study the characteristics of backscattering of seagrass living in the bottom interface. Field experiments were conducted in the Dongdae man, Namhae for day and night to consider the effects of air-bubble from photosynthesis of seagrass. The multi-frequency (30$\~$120 kHz) responses were measured and the distributions of back scattering strength due to the movement of seagrass were Presented by PDF (probability density function) at 120 120 kHz. The results were shown both the frequency dependence and diurnal variation of the backscattering strength between day and night. This diurnal variation may be caused by the amount of oxygen in dissolved bubbles formed by Photosynthesis of seagrass.
Microwave remote sensing can help monitor the land surface water cycle, crop growth and soil moisture. A ground-based polarimetric scatterometer has an advantage for continuous crop using multi-polarization and multi-frequencies and various incident angles have been used extensively in a frequency range expanding from L-band to Ka-band. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between L-, C- and X-band signatures and soil moisture content over the whole soybean growth period. Polarimetric backscatter data at L-, C- and X-bands were acquired every 10 minutes. L-band backscattering coefficients were higher than those observed using C- or X-band over the period. Backscattering coefficients for all frequencies and polarizations increased until Day Of Year (DOY) 271 and then decreased until harvesting stage (DOY 294). Time serious of soil moisture content was not a corresponding with backscattering over the whole growth stage, although it increased relatively until early August (R2, DOY 224). We conducted the relationship between the backscattering coefficients of each band and soil moisture content. Backscattering coefficients for all frequencies were not correlated with soil moisture content when considered over the entire stage ($r{\leq}0.50$). However, we found that L-band HH polarization was correlated with soil moisture content (r=0.90) when Leaf Area Index (LAI)<2. Retrieval equations were developed for estimating soil moisture content using L-band HH polarization. Relation between L-HH and soil moisture shows exponential pattern and highly related with soil moisture content ($R^2=0.92$). Results from this study show that backscattering coefficients of radar scatterometer appear effective to estimate soil moisture content.
