Ba-페라이트/$SiO_2$ 자성박막에서 ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer 층의 역할 (Role of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer in $Ba-ferrite/SiO$ magnetic thin films)

  • We have studied the interfacial diffusion phenomena and the role of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer as a diffusion barrier in the $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ magnetic thin films for high-density recording media. In the interface of amorphous Ba-ferrite ($1900-{\AA}-thick)/SiO_2$ thin film during annealing, the interfacial diffusion started to occur at ${\sim}700^{\circ}C$. As the annealing temperature increased up to $800^{\circ}C$, the interfacial diffusion abruptly proceeded resulting in the high interface roughness and the deterioration of the magnetic properties. In order to control the interfacial diffusion at the high temperature, we introduced ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer ($110-{\AA}-thick$) in the interface of $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ thin film. During the annealing of $Ba-ferrite/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ thin film even at ${\sim}800^{\circ}C$, the interface was very smooth. The smooth interface of the film was also clearly shown by the cross-sectional FESEM. The magnetic properties, such as saturation magnetization 3nd intrinsic coercivity, were also enhanced, due to the inhibition of interfacial diffusion by the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer. Our study suggests that the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ buffer layer act as a useful interfacial diffusion barrier in the $Ba-ferrite/SiO_2$ thin films.

등온적정열량계를 이용한 BaCl2와 EDTA 킬레이션 결합 반응의 pH 영향 (Influence of pH on Chelation of BaCl2 and EDTA Using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry)

  • 등온 적정 열량계는 리간드-수용체 사이의 킬레이션 결합 반응의 엔탈피, 깁스에너지, 엔트로피, 화학양론 등 포함한 모든 열역학적 정보를 측정하는데 유용한 기술이다. 단일독립결합모델을 이용하여 Tricine과 HEPES 완충용엑에서의 BaCl2 와 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)의 킬레이션 결합에서의 열역학적 정보를 획득하였다. 등온 적정 열량계를 이용하여 pH 7~11 영역에서의 킬레이션 결합의 메커니즘과 최적의 결합 조건을 확인하였다. BaCl2와 EDTA의 결합은 자발적인 발열반응이며 pH가 증가할수록 엔트로피적 영향이 높아진다. 1:1로 결합하는 pH 영역은 pH 9.0 근처에서 매우 좁은 영역에서 나타난다.

Induction and Inhibition of CYP1A Gene Expression and Steroidogenesis in Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus Exposed to Tributyltin and Benzo[a]pyrene

  • Cytochrome P450 (CYP1A) gene expression in the liver and sex steroid levels in plasma were investigated in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) exposed to tributyltin (TBT) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). We constructed a cDNA library and cloned a 230-base sequence encoding partial CYP1A DNA. The CYP1A gene expression level was estimated using northern blotting. Hepatic CYP1A mRNA levels in fish injected with BaP at 10 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) increased for 48 h after injection. However, fish injected with both BaP and TBT at 10 mg/kg b.w. showed no significant changes in CYP1A mRNA level after 48 h. Plasma concentrations of testosterone and $17{\beta}$-estradiol were not significantly different in males and females injected with BaP and TBT. We suggest that TBT-induced suppression of BaP bioactivity should be interpreted with caution in biomonitoring field studies.

A Stochastic Approach for Prediction of Partially Measured Concentrations of Benzo[a]pyrene in the Ambient Air in Korea

  • Large quantities of air pollutants are released into the atmosphere and hence, must be monitored and routinely assessed for their health implications. This paper proposes a stochastic technique to predict unobserved hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), especially Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), which can have negative effects on human health. The proposed approach constructs a nearest-neighbor structure by incorporating the linkage between BaP and meteorology and meteorological effects. This approach is adopted in order to predict unobserved BaP concentrations based on observed (or forecasted) meteorological conditions, including temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and air quality. The effects of BaP on human health are examined by characterizing the cancer risk. The efficient prediction provides useful information relating to the optimal monitoring period and projections of future BaP concentrations for both industrial and residential areas within Korea.

  • Depending on host environments, $Eu^{2+}$ emission can be spectrally tuned by manipulating the energy levels between allowed $4f{\leftrightarrow}5d$ transition. Spectral variations of $Eu^{2+}$ emission from narrow green emission to broad yellow emission band were achieved by varying the host lattices such as Sr- or Ba-silicate, borate, and borosilicate.

  • $Eu^{2+}$, $Nd^{3+}$ co-doped $BaAl_2O_4$ are known as a long afterglow phosphor. We found that $Eu^{2+}$-doped $BaAl_2O_4$ showed ptotoconductivity in the range of UV and visual light. In this study, $BaAl_2O_4$:Eu thin film has been prepared by RF sputtering method and a sensing characteristics to UV and visual light was performed. Only $Eu^{2+}$ and $Nd^{3+}$ co-doped $BaAl_2O_4$ powders and targets for deposition were prepared by a convention solid state method, and the deposition was performed in a reducing $H_2$-Ar mixture gas on Si substrates. The observation of crystalline phase and morphology of the sputtered film were performed using XRD, EDX. The photoluminescence and photocurrent to UV and visual light were measured simultaneously using 300W-Xe solar simulator as a light source. It was confirmed that the photocurrent induced by irradiation of light showed a linear relationship to the light intensity.

Thermal Evolution of BaO-CuO Flux as Sintering Aid for Proton Conducting Ceramic Fuel Cells

  • The eutectic melt of BaO-CuO flux is known to be a potential sintering aid for $Ba(Zr,Y)O_3$ (BZY) electrolyte for proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). A density of BZY higher than 97% of theoretical density can be achieved via sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using a flux composed of 28 mol% BaO and 72 mol% CuO. In the present study, chemical and structural evolution of BaO-CuO flux throughout the sintering process was investigated. An intermediate holding step at $1100^{\circ}C$ leads to formation of various impurity compounds such as $BaCuO_{1.977}$, $Ba_{0.92}Cu_{1.06}O_{2.28}$ and $Cu_{16}O_{14.15}$, which exhibit significantly larger unit cell volumes than the matrix. The presence of such secondary compounds with large lattice mismatch can potentially lead to mechanical failure. On the other hand, direct heating to the final sintering temperature produced CuO and $Cu_2O$ as secondary phases, whose unit cell volumes are close to that of the matrix. Therefore, the final composition of the flux is strongly affected by the thermal history, and a proper sintering schedule should be used to obtain the desired properties of the final product.

골연령 검사를 시행한 환자들의 임상적 특성과 골연령 측정 방법 간의 상관성에 대한 후향적 연구 (A Case Series on Clinical Characteristics of Patients Who Underwent Bone Age Test and Relationships between Methods of Bone Age Measurements)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristic of the 157 pediatric patients who visited a Korean medical hospital for bone age (BA) measurement and to compare the BA measurement using Tanner-Whitehouse 3-based analysis software and specialists in pediatric Korean medicine to determine the relationships. Methods The study included 157 pediatric patients who visited a Korean medicine hospital for BA measurements from June 2021 to June 2023. They were analyzed to determine the characteristics and agreement of BA measurements using Tanner-Whitehouse 3-based analysis software and specialists using classification by age, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots. Results In total, 61.8% of the study population were boys and 38.2%, girls, with an average age of 11.32 ± 1.87. The types of growth were various, and the average of bone maturity was 0.48 ± 1.13 as concluded by analysis software and 0.38 ± 1.15 as concluded by the specialists. The ICC of two methods were excellent: 0.995 (overall), 0.996 (boys) and 0.994 (girls). However, BA determined by analysis software tended to be higher than that determined by specialists when the patients were young. Conclusions This study showed that patients visited the hospital for BA measurement regardless of their height, and the agreement of BA between the two methods can be used as a reference. However, there was differences in the trends between age and sex, which should be interpreted with caution.

Noise and Room Acoustic Conditions in a Tertiary Referral Hospital, Seoul National University Hospital

  • Background and Objectives: Noise levels and room acoustic parameters at a tertiary referral hospital, Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) in Korea, are investigated. Materials and Methods: Through a questionnaire, acoustically problematic rooms are identified. Noise levels in emergency rooms (ERs) and intensive care units (ICUs) are measured over about three days. Acoustically critical and problematic rooms in the otolaryngology department are measured including examination rooms, operating rooms, nurse stations, receptions, and patient rooms. Results: The A-weighted equivalent noise level, LAeq, ranges from 54 to 56 dBA, which is at least 10 dB lower than the noise levels of 65 to 73 dBA measured in American ERs. In an ICU, the noise level for the first night was 66 dBA, which came down to 56 dBA for the next day. The noise levels during three different ear surgeries vary from 57 to 62 dBA, depending on the use of surgical drills and suctions. The noise levels in a patient room is found to be 47 dBA, while the nurse stations and the receptions have high noise levels up to 64 dBA. The reverberation times in an operation room, examination room, and single patient room are found to be below 0.6 s. Conclusions: At SNUH, the nurse stations and receptions were found to be quite noisy. The ERs were quieter than in the previous studies. The measured reverberation times seemed low enough but some other nurse stations and examination rooms were not satisfactory according to the questionnaire.

성장을 주소로 한방병원에 내원한 환아의 한의치료 효과: Deep Learning 기반 골연령 판독 프로그램을 활용한 증례보고 (Effect of Korean Medicine Treatment on Children Who Visited Korean Medicine Hospital for Growth: A Case Report Using Deep Learning-Based Bone Age Program)

  • Objectives We aimed to compare the bone age (BA) estimation by a deep learning-based program and by a specialist in pediatrics of Korean medicine using the Tanner-Whitehouse 3 (TW3) technique for the cases of children who visited a Korean medicine hospital for growth, and to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment. Methods For three children who visited the Korean medicine hospital for growth, BA estimation by the deep learning program and by the specialist in pediatrics of Korean medicine using the TW3 technique was compared, and the time required for estimation was investigated. The change of height, BA, and predicted adult height (PAH) using deep learning program after Korean medicine treatment was observed. Results BA estimation of the left hand bone X-ray by the specialist using the TW3 technique showed a difference of -0.03 to +0.15 years from the estimation by the deep learning program. The mean estimation time was 5 minutes and 49 seconds per one for the specialist and 48 seconds for the deep learning program. During the treatment period, the height percentile and PAH estimated by deep learning program were increased after Korean medicine treatment compared to baseline while acceleration of BA was suppressed compared to chronological age. Conclusions BA estimation using the deep learning program and the TW3 technique showed a difference of less than 0.15 years, and in three cases of patients with growth as the chief complaint, Korean medicine treatment increased height percentile and PAH without accelerating BA maturation.
