The present study concerns a experimental study of fully developed laminar flow of a Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid through a concentric annulus with a combined bulk axial flow and inner cylinder rotation for the various radius ratio. This study shows the fundamental difference between Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid flow in an annulus for various radius ratio.
The steady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the internal flow fields characteristics according to wind tunnel contraction type. The turbulence model used in this study is a realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ modified from the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. As a results, the distribution of the axial mean velocity components along the central axis of the flow model is very similar to the ASME and BE types, and the cubic and cosine types. When the flow passes through the interior space of the analytical models, the flow resistance at the inlet of the plenum chamber is the largest at BS type contraction, but the smallest at cubic type contraction. The boundary layer thickness is the smallest in the cosine type contraction as the axial distance increases. The maximum turbulent kinetic energy in the test section is the smallest in the order of the contraction of cubic type and cosine type. Comprehensively, cubic type contraction is the best choice for wind tunnel performance, and cosine type contraction can be the next best solution.

A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested for the axial gap ratio (${\delta}$) of the supersonic turbine that is the one of the turbine design parameter. Firstly, the flow was visualized by a single pass Schlieren system. Next, total and static pressure of the cascade were measured by a pressure scanning system. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions, flow characteristics of the supersonic turbine were observed.
A computer program is developed for the prediction of the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics in the basic design step of axial flow fan. The flow field and the performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuations induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate via dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present method are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful in optimizing design variables of fan with high efficiency and low noise level.
It is important to predict the main feature of fully developed turbulent secondary flow through infinite triangular arrays of parallel rod bundles. One-equation turbulence model which include anisotropic eddy viscosity model was applied to predict the exact velocity field. For a constant properties, Reynolds equations were solved by the finite element method. Mean axial velocity near the wall is simulated by the law of the wall. The numerical results showed good agreement with avaiable experimental data. The strength of the secondary flow increased with Reynolds number but decreased with rod spacing, P/D (pitch-to-diameter). The secondary flow affects remarkably the distribution of the axial velocity, wall shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy in the closely packed rod array bundles.
The effect of the radial temperature gradient and the presence of slits in the wall of outer of two cylinders involved in creating a Taylor-Couette flow was investigated by measuring the velocity field inside the gap. The slits were azimuthally located along the inner wall of the outer cylinder and the number of slits used in this study was 18. The radius ratio and aspect ratio of the models were 0.825 and 48, respectively. The heating film wrapped around the inner cylinder was used for generating the constant heat flux and we ensured the constant temperature condition at the outer space of the outer cylinder. The velocity fields were measured by using the PIV(particle image velocimetry) method. The refractive index matching method was applied to remove image distortion. The results were compared with plain wall configuration of Taylor-Couette flow. From the results, the presence of slits in the wall of outer cylinder and temperature gradient increased the flow instability.
The static pressure distribution and flow characteristics inside the high-pressure swirl spray were investigated by measuring the static pressure inside the spray and applying the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The static pressure difference between inner and outer part of spray was measured at different axial locations and operating conditions using a piezo-resislive pressure transducer. To obtain the qualitative value of swirl motion at different operating conditions, the spray impact-pressure at the nozzle exit was measured using a piezo-electric pressure transducer, and the flow angle was measured using a microscopic imaging system. The flow characteristics inside the high pressure swirl spray was simulated by the 1-phase 3-dimensional CFD model. The effect of pressure alternations on spray development was discussed with macroscopic spray images and a mathematical liquid film model. The results showed that the static pressure drop is observed inside the swirl spray as a result of the dragged air motion and the centrifugal force of the air. The recirculation vortex inside the spray was also observed inside the swirl spray as a result of the adverse pressure gradient along the axial locations. The results of analytical liquid film model and macroscopic spray images showed that the static pressure structure is one of the main parameters affecting the swirl spray development.

In the present study, the velocity profiles and entrance length of developing transitional pulsating flows are investigated both analytically and experimentally in the entrance region of a square duct. The systems of conservation equations for transitional pulsating flows in a square duct are solved analytically by linearizing the non-linear convective terms. Analytical solutions are obtained in the form of infinite series for velocity pofiles. The experimental study for the air flow in a square duct(40mm*40mm*4000mm) is carried out to measure velocity profiles and other parameters by using a hot-wire anemometer with a data acquisition and processing system. The distribution of velocity profiles( $u_{ps}$ / $u_{m,ta}$) in the decelerating period is higher than in the accelerating period. The distribution of the axial component of the axial component of velocity in the transitional flow is nearly uniform in the central region of the duct, and decrease rapidly near the wall. The entrance length correlation of the transitional pulsating flows in a square duct is obtained to be $L_{e}$/ $D_{h}$=0.83 $A_{1}$R $e_{ta}$ /(.omega. sup+1)$^{2}$TEX>

In general, the choking phenomenon occurs by flow acceleration for a turbine at high pressure ratio condition. In choking condition, total pressure ratio increases without mass flow rate variation. It is hard to predict choking characteristics by using conventional meanline analysis which used mass flow inlet boundary condition. In the present study, the algorithm for predicting choking point is developed to solve the problem. Moreover, performance estimation algorithm after choking is presented by reflecting the flow behaviour of flow expansion at choked nozzle or rotor. The analysis results are compared with 3D CFD analysis and experimental data to validate present method.

The purpose of this study was experimentally to investigate the disintegration process and disintegration mechanism when co-axial air flows vertically for the longest smooth liquid jet. These were affected by liquid velocity, air velocity, air-to-liquid diameter ratio, nozzle shape, and air-liquid contacting position. That is, this process of disintegration of the liquid jet was similar to that occurred when liquid pressure was increased. At Reynolds number of 10, 000 and below, the changes in the breakup length represent different tendency according to liquid flow rate. The influence of air flow on the disintegration of liquid jet was different according to air-to-liquid diameter ratio, air orifice diameter, nozzle shape and contacting position of liquid and air. In particular, when the tip of liquid nozzle was inside the air orifice, the effect of air flow was the larger than outside the air orifice. The effect of liquid mass flow rate on the change rate of the breakup length was also different.
