  • The Ssteel-Cconcrete (SC) Ccomposite Ccolumn is a new Ccomposite Ccolunin system, where hoops are welded between flanges of H-shapesd steel and concrete is filled in spaces between flanges are filled with con crete. Tests of SC composite columns were performed previously to determine their compression, bending and shear strength, and it showed good structural behavior. But sSince a column is usually subjected to an axial compression force, and bending it ihas needed to be bent forevaluate its structural behavior to be evaluated when its axial load and bending isaresimultaneously applied to the SC composite column. In this paper, tests were conducted to investigate the bending strength of SC composite columns subjected to axial compression force and bending moment. The parameters of the tests were concrete, a stud bolt, a hoop and a magnitude of axial compression. The test results showed that the maximum bending strength and ductility of an SC composite column were increased by 33-42% and 33-63%, respectively, comparinged to those of a bare steel column. Also, the results obtained bywith the Korean Limit State Design Code (LSD) presents a considerably safe side value compared to those of the Eurocode-4 and the Japan Code. However, wWhen the axial compression force is was increased, however, there awere considerable differences between the maximum strength obtained by the test and the LSD analysis. For this reason, it is recommended tothe use of the Eurocode-4 is recommended when calculates the strength of an SC composite column is being calculated, since the Eurocode-4 gives us a better estimation.

  • This paper presents a study of buckling of the multi-vaulted cylindrical shell ("Aster"), under an axial compression alone or combined with an external pressure. This shell which was presented in a recent paper is a self-stiffened structure having a satisfactory behaviour and a higher buckling strength under external pressure than a circular cylindrical shell with the same dimensions. The results of this study emphasize the interest of the behaviour of the "Aster" shell under two other types of loading, revealing an acceptable level of strength which is favorable for an expansion of its use in other areas.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate effects of prebuckling on the buckling of laminated composite cylindrical shells. Axial compression and lateral pressure are considered for laminated composite cylindrical shells with the ratios of length to radius. The shell walls are made of a laminate with several symmetric ply orientations. The study was made using finite difference energy method, utilizing the nonlinear bifurcation branch with nonlinear prebuckling displacements. The results are compared to the buckling loads determined when membrane prebuckling displacements are considered. Review the influence of nonlinear prebuckling for the buckling loads, the difference between the actual and classical buckling loads are increased as the increments with the ratios of length to radius, for which is applied the axial compression, but almost same for the lateral pressure.

  • Concrete filled steel tube (CFST) structures have recently seen wide use in China, but studies of the shear problem of CFST are inadequate. This paper presents an experimental study on the shear capacity of circular concrete filled steel tube (CCFT) specimens with and without axial compression force. Shear capacity, ductility, and damage modes of CCFTs were investigated and compared. Test results revealed the following: 1) CCFTs with a small shear span ratio may fail in shear in a ductile manner; 2) Several factors including section size, material properties, shear span ratio, axial compression ratio, and confinement index affect the shear capacity of CCFTs. Based on test results and analysis, this paper proposes a design formula for the shear capacity of CCFTs.

  • The aim of a benchmark study is carried out nine methods are employed for ULS analysis which implicitly predict the ultimate strength of aluminium stiffened panels under axial compression. For this purpose, DNV PULS, experimental and numerical data on the ultimate strength of panels were collected. Comparison of these experimental / numerical, DNV PULS / numerical, results with theoretical solutions by the candidate methods is performed. Also it's compared that ALPS/ULSAP program is based on closed-form formula for the ULS of plates and grillages under axial compression. It is considered that ALPS/ULSAP methodology provides quite accurate and reasonable ULS calculations by a comparison with more refined FEA. Comparison of these experimental data, numerical, computational software results with the simplified solutions obtained by the candidate methods is then performed. The model uncertainties associated with the candidate methods are studied in terms of mean bias and COV (i.e., coefficient of variation) against experiments and numerical solutions, and the relative performance of the various methods is discussed.

  • This paper presents an efficient approach to generate a new empirical formula to predict the axial compression capacity (ACC) of circular concrete-filled tube (CCFT) columns using the artificial neural network (ANN). A total of 258 test results extracted from the literature were used to develop the ANN models. The ANN model having the highest correlation coefficient (R) and the lowest mean square error (MSE) was determined as the best model. Stability analysis, sensitivity analysis, and a parametric study were carried out to estimate the stability of the ANN model and to investigate the main contributing factors on the ACC of CCFT columns. Stability analysis revealed that the ANN model was more stable than several existing formulae. Whereas, the sensitivity analysis and parametric study showed that the outer diameter of the steel tube was the most sensitive parameter. Additionally, using the validated ANN model, a new empirical formula was derived for predicting the ACC of CCFT columns. Obviously, a higher accuracy of the proposed empirical formula was achieved compared to the existing formulae.

  • Cycloidal ball planetary transmission (CBPT) has many applications as precision reducer, such as precision machinery and automation drive systems etc. The traditional analytical model of CBPT cannot accurately describe the change of the normal force of meshing points, and thus cannot describe the precise transmission process of meshing pairs. In the paper, a method for deriving the normal force equation is put forward by using the non-linear relationship between force and deformation in elastic mechanics. The two-point contact analytical models of all the meshing pairs are established to obtain the micro-displacement analytical model of CBPT under axial pre-tightening. Then, the non-real-time two-point contact analytical models of all the meshing pairs are further constructed to obtain the normal force expression to determine the critical compression coefficients. Experimental investigations are performed to verify the analytical model using the critical compression coefficients.

  • This paper presents a finite element model which can simulate the axial compression behavior of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) filled square steel tube columns using the ABAQUS software. The analytical model was established by selecting the reasonable nonlinear analysis theory and the constitutive relationship of material in the columns. The nonlinear analysis of failure modes, deformation characteristics, stress nephogram, and load-strain curves of columns under axial loads was performed in detail. Meanwhile, the influences of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage, profile steel ratio, width thickness ratio of square steel tube, RAC strength and slenderness ratio on the axial compression behavior of columns were also analyzed carefully. It shows that the results of finite element analysis are in good agreement with the experimental results, which verifies the validity of the analytical model. The axial bearing capacity of columns decreased with the increase of RCA replacement percentage. While the increase of wall thickness of square steel tube, profile steel ratio and RAC strength were all beneficial to improve the bearing capacity of columns. Additionally, the parameter analysis of finite element analysis on the columns was also carried out by using the above numerical model. In general, the SRRC filled square steel tube columns have high bearing capacity and good deformation ability. On the basis of the above analysis, a modified formula based on the American ANSI/AISC 360-10 was proposed to calculate the nominal axial bearing capacity of the columns under axial loads. The research conclusions can provide some references for the engineering application of this kind of columns.

  • For nonhomogeneous and anisotropic rocks such as schist, shale, etc, a method to determine the anisotropic elastic constants was proposed. Many authors have investigated in detail the behavior elastic constants of anisotropy rocks(Pinto 1970, Amadei 1983, 1992, Amadei & Savage 1989). They concluded that equations of elastic constants E$_1$, E$_2$ and G$_2$ can be derived from the measured strains in arbitrary three directions. And, modulus of elasticity varies according to the inclination of discontinuity in specimens. If we attach three strain gages in accordance with the directions of anisotropy on the rock specimen under uni-axial compression and diametral compression tests, anisotropy elastic constants can be determined by these equations. With this method, the degree of anisotropy will be easily evaluated by simple laboratory test. This paper presents the results of elastic constants due to the angle of bedding planes of anisotropic rock, such as shale, in uni-axial compression and diametral compression tests
