In this paper an analytical model is presented that addresses the compressive response of short-fiber reinforced concrete members (FRC) with hooked steel fibers. This model is applicable to a wide range of concrete strengths and accounts for the interaction between the cover spalling and the concrete core confinement induced by transverse steel stirrups and also for buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bars. The load-shortening curves generated here analytically fit existing experimental data well.

The square tubed-reinforced concrete (TRC) column is a kind of special concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, in which the outer thin-walled steel tube does not pass through the beam-column joint, so that the longitudinal steel reinforcing bars in the RC beam are continuous through the connection zone. However, there is a possible decrease of the axial bearing capacity at the TRC column to RC beam connection due to the discontinuity of the column tube, which is a concern to engineers. 24 connections and 7 square TRC columns were tested under axial compression. The primary parameters considered in the tests are: (1) connection location (corner, exterior and interior); (2) dimensions of RC beam cross section; (3) RC beam type (with or without horizontal haunches); (4) tube type (with or without stiffening ribs). The test results show that all specimens have relatively high load-carrying capacity and satisfactory ductility. With a proper design, the connections exhibit higher axial resistance and better ductility performance than the TRC column. The feasibility of this type of connections is verified.

In past years, numerous problems have vexed engineers with regard to buckling, corrosion, bending, and overloading in damaged steel structures. This article sets out to investigate the possible effects of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and steel plates for retrofitting deficient steel square hollow section (SHS) columns. The effects of axial loading, stiffness, axial displacement, the position and shape of deficient region on the length of steel SHS columns, and slenderness ratio are examined through a detailed parametric study. A total of 14 specimens was tested for failure under axial compression in a laboratory and simulated using finite element (FE) analysis based on a numerical approach. The results indicate that the application of CFRP sheets and steel plates also caused a reduction in stress in the damaged region and prevented or retarded local deformation around the deficiency. The findings showed that a deficiency leads to reduced load-carrying capacity of steel SHS columns and the retrofitting method is responsible for the increase in the load-bearing capacity of the steel columns. Finally, this research showed that the CFRP performed better than steel plates in compensating the axial force caused by the cross-section reduction due to the problems associated with the use of steel plates, such as in welding, increased weight, thermal stress around the welding location, and the possibility of creating another deficiency by welding.
The numerical analysis on PHC piles socketed into weathered rocks through sandy soil layers was conducted to propose the table solution or the chart solution to obtain the mobilization capacity. The mobilization capacity was determined at the settlement of 5% pile diameter and applied a safety factor of 3.0. In order to utilize the excellent compressive strength of the PHC pile effectively, it is recommended that the allowable bearing capacity of ground would be designed to be more than the long-term allowable compressive pile load. A procedure for determining an allowable pile capacity for PHC piles socketed into weathered rocks through sandy soil layers is given by the sum of the allowable skin friction of the sandy soil layer and the weathered rock layer and the allowable end bearing capacity of the weathered rock layer. The design efficiency of the PHC pile is about 85% at the reasonable design stage in the verification of the newly proposed method. Thus, long-term allowable compressive load (Pall) level of PHC piles can be utilized in the optimal design stage.
The objective of this study is to experimentally scrutinize the axial performance of built-up concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns composed of steel plates. In this case, the main parameters cross section types, compressive strength of filled concrete, and the effect of welding lines. Welded built-up steel box columns are fabricated by connecting two pieces of cold-formed U-shaped or four pieces of L-shaped thin steel plates with continuous penetration groove welding line located at mid-depth of stub column section. Furthermore, traditional square steel box sections with no welding lines are investigated for the comparison of axial behavior between the generic and build-up cross sections. Accordingly, 20 stub columns with thickness and height of 2 and 300 mm have been manufactured. As a result, welding lines in built-up specimens act as stiffeners because have higher strength and thickness in comparison to the plates. Subsequently, by increasing the welding lines, the load bearing capacity of stub columns has been increased in comparison to the traditional series. Furthermore, for specimens with the same confinement steel tubes and concrete core, increment of B/t ratio has reduced the ductility and axial strength.
Self-compacting Concrete (SCC) Filled Square steel Tubes (SCFST) was used to strengthen square RC columns. To establish the efficiency of this strengthening method, 17 columns were tested under axial compression loading including 3 RC columns without any strengthening (WRC), 1 RC column strengthened with concrete jacket (CRC), 13 RC columns strengthened with self-compacting concrete filled square steel tubes (SRC). The experimental results showed that the use of SCFST is interesting since the ductility and the bearing capacity of the RC columns are greatly improved. The improvement ratio is significantly affected by the nominal wall thickness of steel tubes (t), the strength grade of strengthening concrete (C), and the length-to-width ratio (L / B) of the specimens. In order to quantitatively analyze the effect of these test parameters on axial loading behavior of the SRC columns, three performance indices, enhancement ratio (ER), ductility index (DI), and confinement ratio (CR), were used. The strength of the SRC columns obtained from the experiments was then employed to verify the proposed mode referring to the relevant codes. It was found that codes DBJ13-51 could relatively predict the strength of the SRC columns accurately, and codes AIJ and BS5400 were relatively conservative.

The angle steel frame confined concrete columns (ASFCs) are an emerging form of hybrid columns, which comprise an inner angle steel frame and a concrete column. The inner angle steel frame can provide axial bearing capacity and well confining effect for composite columns. This paper presents the experimental and theoretical studies on the seismic behaviour of ASFCs. The experimental study of the 6 test specimens is presented, based on the previous study of the authors. The theoretical study includes two parts. One part establishes the section analysis model, and it uses to analyze section axial force-moment-curvature. Another part establishes the section moment-curvature hysteresis model. The test and analysis results show that the axial compression ratio and the assembling of steel slabs influence the local buckling of the angle steel. The three factors (axial compression ratio, content of angle steel and confining effect) have important effects on the seismic behaviour of ASFCs. And the theoretical model can provide reasonably accurate predictions and apply in section analysis of ASFCs.

A parametric study was carried out to find the fuel lubrication performance of high speed small rolling element bearings. Both MIL-PRF-7808 turbine oil and JP-8 aircraft fuel were used as the lubricant to compare the operational characteristics. 17 mm inner diameter deep groove ball bearing and 20 mm cylindrical roller bearing were used. A high speed bearing test rig was developed and the testing was done with varying applied load, cooling air temperature, lubricant flow rate, and speed. Fuel caused more cage wear than oil for ball bearing with increasing axial load and rotational speed. The bearing temperature using fuel was lower than that using oil, and this seems to be the result of the high cooling capacity of fuel. According to various tests, the fuel lubrication is applicable for the lubrication on the main shaft bearings of expendable small gas turbines.

A base expansion micropile was developed to improve the bearing capacity of the micropile, which bears a simple device installed at the pile base. Under an axial load, this base expansion structure radially expands at the pile tip and attaches itself around ground, compressing the boring wall in the construction stage. In this study, conventional and base expansion micropiles were constructed in the weathered rock where micropiles are commonly installed. Further, field load tests were conducted to verify the bearing capacity enhancement effect. From the load test results, it was revealed that the shaft resistance of base expansion micropiles was about 12% higher than that of conventional micropiles. The load transfer analysis results also showed that compared to conventional micropiles, the unit skin friction and unit end bearing of base expansion micropiles were 15.4% and 315.1% higher, respectively, in the bearing zone of the micropile.
The study presents the results of an experimental program concerning the shear force transfer between reinforced concrete (RC) jackets and existing columns with damages. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the repair method applied and the contribution of each shear transfer mechanism of the interface. It includes 22 concrete columns (core) (of 24,37MPa concrete strength) with square section (150mm side, 500 mm height and scale 1:2). Ten columns had initial construction damages and twelve were subjected to initial axial load. Sixteen columns have full jacketing at all four faces with 80mm thickness (of 31,7MPa concrete strength) and contain longitudinal bars (of 500MPa nominal strength) and closed stirrups spaced at 25mm, 50mm or 100mm (of 220MPa nominal strength). Fourteen of them contain dowels at the interface between old and new concrete. All columns were subjected to repeated (pseudo-seismic) axial compression with increasing deformation cycles up to failure with or without jacketing. Two load patterns were selected to examine the difference of the behavior of columns. The effects of the initial damages, of the reinforcement of the interface (dowels) and of the confinement generated by the stirrups are investigated through axial- deformation (slip) diagrams and the energy absorbed diagrams. The results indicate that the initial damages affect the total behavior of the column and the capacity of the interface to shear mechanisms and to slip: a) the maximum bearing load of old column is decreased affecting at the same time the loading capacity of the jacketed element, b) suitable repair of initially damaged specimens increases the capacity of the jacketed column to transfer load through the interface.
