  • A resolution enhancement method for estimating the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of signals is presented. The proposed method is by virtually expanding a real array into virtual arrays and then averaging the spatial spectrum of the virtual arrays, each of which has a different aperture size. Superior DOA resolutions are shown in comparison with the standard algorithm, MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC), for incoherent signals incident on a uniform circular array.

  • The performance of slopes during earthquake is often accessed in terms of permanent deformation. In the assessment of permanent deformation, Newmark-type rigid block analysis is widely used. Original Newmark-type block approach, however, assumes the potential sliding mass to be rigid, and has been criticized to be potentially unconservative. The paper reviews analytically the impact of this noncompliance assumption on computed permanent deformations. The results indicate that there is a simple criterion that can be used to determine the level of conservativeness of the rigid block approach in cases of gently-sloping slip surfaces and retaining walls.

  • A spectral inversion scheme, based on the moment-method procudure with series-expanded field within each cell by dividing the dielectric object into a small number os rectangular cells with large area, is developed to regularize the ill-posedness inherent in inverse scattering problems. One of the interesting features on the presented scheme is that the relative dielectric constant may be obtained by averaging over each cell. This averaging is expected to play an important role in regularizing the high-frequency effect due to noise.

  • In this paper, we establish an asymptotic formula for mean value of $L^{(k)}({\frac{1}{2}},\;{\chi}_P)$ averaging over ℙ2g+1 and over ℙ2g+2 as g → ∞ in odd characteristic. We also give an asymptotic formula for mean value of $L^{(k)}({\frac{1}{2}},\;{\chi}_u)$ averaging over 𝓘g+1 and over 𝓕g+1 as g → ∞ in even characteristic.

  • In this study, the effect of the shape error of a guideway on the movement of a stage that uses an air bearing is analyzed. The shape error of moving parts supported by the air bearing is known not to affect the vibrations of moving parts as much as the magnitude of the shape error. This is called the "averaging effect." In this study, the effect of shape error on a guideway, as well as the averaging effect of an air-bearing system, is analyzed theoretically using a dynamic-analysis program. The dynamic-analysis program applies a commercially available code in COMSOL and solves the Reynolds equation between the stage and the guideway, along with the equation of motion of the stage. The stage is modeled as a two-degree-of-freedom system. The shape error is applied to the film thickness function in the form of a sine wave. The stage movement is analyzed using the fast Fourier transform process. The eccentricity and tilting are found to be proportional to the amplitude of the shape error of the guideway. Stage vibrations are less than 10% of the amplitude of the shape error on the guideway. This means that the averaging effect of the air bearing is verified quantitatively. Moreover, if the air supply position matches the shape error in the guideway, there is a notable change in eccentricity and tilting.

  • This study explores the signal characteristics for different averaging intervals and defines representative verticies for each observatory by criterion of percent rate and variance. The shorter averaging interval shows the higher frequency variation, though the lower percent rate. In the tidal currents, we could hardly find the differences between 60-minute and 20-minute averaging. The newly defined criterion improves reliability of HF-radar data compared with the present reference which deselects the half by percent rate.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel approach to improve the performance of minima controlled recursive averaging (MCRA) which is based on the second-order conditional maximum a posteriori (CMAP). From an investigation of the MCRA scheme, it is discovered that the MCRA method cannot take full consideration of the inter-frame correlation of voice activity since the noise power estimate is adjusted by the speech presence probability depending on an observation of the current frame. To avoid this phenomenon, the proposed MCRA approach incorporates the second-order CMAP criterion in which the noise power estimate is obtained using the speech presence probability conditioned on both the current observation and the speech activity decisions in the previous two frames. Experimental results show that the proposed MCRA technique based on second-order conditional MAP yields better results compared to the conventional MCRA method.

  • The life and performance of lithium battery are greatly influenced by the formation process which is essential in the process of manufacture. Charge/discharge system for the lithium battery are required for the formation process. To simulate such a system in a conventional method takes very long time and requires huge memory space to save data files. So the simulation may be impossible with a general-purpose PC. In this paper, the lithium battery is modelled to a resistor-capacitor serial circuit and the lithium battery charge/discharge system is analyzed and simulated by using state space averaging method. As a result, the simulation time is reduced dramatically and the simulation of the lithium battery charge/discharge system becomes possible on a general-purpose PC within 3 hours. Also, both the charge/discharge characteristics and the time required to charge/discharge of the lithium battery charge/discharge system can be observed. To verify the propriety of resistor-capacitor serial circuit modeling method for lithium battery and the validity of the analysis and simulation based on state space averaging, the lithium battery charge/discharge system is composed and experimentations are carried out.
