A Study on the Processing Characteristic in the Compression Molding of Hybrid Thermoplastic Composites (하이브리드 열가소성 복합재료의 압축성형에서 공정특성에 관한 연구)

  • Hybrid composites usually are defined as composites having different types of reinforcements such as fibers and particles. The major advantage of hybrid composites is able to control the material properties such as optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. For this reason, hybrid composites are widely used in automotive, marine, household, and electrical industries. The objective of this work was to investigate processing characteristics in the compression molding of hybrid thermoplastic composites. The mechanical properties of composites manufactured in various forming conditions were monitored. The composites contained randomly oriented long carbon fiber and carbon black in polypropylene(PP) matrix were used. The carbon fiber contents of composites were 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, and carbon black contents were 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% by weight. Compression molding was conducted at various mold temperatures. Crstallinity was also measured by using X-RD. The tensile modulus of the composites increased with increasing the mold temperature. However, the impact strength of the composites decreased as the mold temperature increased.

A Study of A Nonlinear Viscoelastic Model for Elastomeric Bushing in Radial Mode (일래스토메릭 부싱의 반경방향모드 비선형 점탄성 모델연구)

  • An elastomeric bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to reduce the load transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is an elastomeric hollow cylinder which is bonded to a solid steel shaft at its inner surface and a steel sleeve at its outer surface. The relation between the load applied to the shaft or sleeve and the relative deformation of elastomeric bushing is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. A load-displacement relation for elastomeric bushing is important for dynamic numerical simulations. A boundary value problem for the bushing response leads to the load-displacement relation which requires complex calculations. Therefore, by modifying the constitutive equation for a nonlinear viscoelastic incompressible material developed by Lianis, the data for the elastomeric bushing material was obtained and this data was used to derive the new load-displacement for radial response of the bushing. After the load relaxation function for the bushing is obtained from the step displacement control test, Pipkin-Rogers model was developed. Solutions were allowed for comparison between the results of Modified Lianis model and those of the proposed model. It is shown that the proposed Pipkin-Rogers model is in very good agreement with Modified Lianis model.

Design Enhancements for Automotive Integrated Shell Structures (차량 복합판형부품의 설계개선 기법들)

  • Recent attempt to enhance the safety against collision reshaped the simple shell structures into the integrated complex shell structures. Moreover, due to various regulations continuously tightened for environment protection, weight reduction of automobiles becomes an increasingly important issue. Auto parts lightening is mainly accomplished by more reasonable design, adoption of lighter materials and miniaturization of the auto bodies. Focusing on the locally enhanced design approach among the above three ways, we here attempt to develop a patching optimization method, and also to determine the thicknesses of an integrated shell structure, both bringing a specified amount of stress relaxation. We first select a cross member as a patching optimization model. Based on the finite element stress calculations, we relieve the stress of cross member by patching in two ways-nonuniform thickness patching and optimized uniform thickness patching, the latter of which is more effective in a practical point of view for the preset amount of stress relaxation. Selecting a box type subframe as another finite element analysis model, we then determine the thickness of each part by axiomatic design approach for a preset amount of stress relaxation. The patching methodology and the axiomatic approach adopted in this work can be applied to the other complex shell structures such as center member and lower control arm.

  • Many kinds of robots and machines have been developed to replace human laborin industrial and medical fields, as well as domestic life. In these applications, the device sneed to obtain environmental data using diverse sensors. Among such sensors, the tactile sensor is important because of its ability to get information regarding surface texture and force through the use of mechanical contact. In this research, a simple tactile sensor was developed using the direct writing of pressure sensitive material and layered fabrication of photocurable material. The body of the sensor was fabricated using layered fabrication, and pressure sensitive materials were dispensed between the layers using direct writing. We examined the line fabrication characteristics of the pressure sensitive material according to nozzle dispensing conditions. A simple $4{\times}4$ array flexible tactile sensor was successfully fabricated using the proposed process.

  • In establishing silent environment such as automobile and industrial instrument, the roles of the insulating materials are critical. The proper and effective positioning of insulating materials is essential in the field of noise as well as in designing silent automobile. In this paper, we proposed the systematic and efficient scheme for optimizing complete automotive interiors for noise control. In order to attain this purpose, following analysis has been carried out: First, measuring the Biot parameters of insulating materials and the transmission loss with reflecting the appropriate arrangement of insulating materials has been experimented. In addition, we made comparison among transmission loss by the tools of analysis and verification, experimental value under consideration of various situations of automobile and analysis by the SEA.

  • The aim of this paper is to describe the development of the electron-beam optic analysis algorithm for simulating the e-beam behavior concerned with electrostatic lenses and their focal properties in the micro-column of the multi-beam lithography system. The electrostatic lens consists of an array of electrodes held at different potentials. The electrostatic lens, the so-called einzel lens, which is composed of three electrodes, is used to focus the electron beam by adjusting the voltages of the electrodes. The optics of an electron beam penetrating a region of an electric field is similar to the situation in light optics. The electron is accelerated or decelerated, and the trajectory depends on the angle of incidence with respect to the equi-potential surfaces of the field. The performance parameters, such as the working distances and the beam diameters are obtained by the computational simulations as a function of the focusing voltages of the einzel lens electrodes. Based on the developed simulation algorithm, the high performance of the micro-column can be achieved through optimized control of the einzel lens.

  • A criterion for evaluation of burners has changed recently, and the environmental problems are raised as a global issue. Burners with higher thermal efficiency and lower oxygen in the exhaust gas, evaluated better. To comply with environmental regulations, burners must satisfy the $NO_x$ and CO regulation. Consequently. 'good burner' means one whose thermal efficiency is high under the constraint of $NO_x$ and CO consistency. To make existing burner satisfy recent criterion, it is highly recommended to develop a feedback control scheme whose output is the consistency of $NO_x$ and CO. This paper describes the development of a real time flame diagnosis technique that evaluate and diagnose the combustion states, such as consistency of components in exhaust gas, stability of flame in the quantitative sense. In this paper, it was proposed on the flame diagnosis technique of burner using Neuro- Fuzzy algorithm. This study focuses on the relation of the color of the flame and the state of combustion. Neuro- Fuzzy learning algorithm is used in obtaining the fuzzy membership function and rules. Using the constructed inference algorithm, the amount of $NO_x$ and CO of the combustion gas was successfully inferred.

Effect of Crack Orientation on Spatial Randomness of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate in FSWed 7075-T651 Aluminum Alloy Joints (마찰교반용접된 7075-T651 알루미늄 합금 용접부의 피로균열전파율의 공간적 변동성에 미치는 균열 방향의 영향)

  • In this investigation, the effect of crack orientation on spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy joints has been statistically analyzed by Weibull distribution. The fatigue crack growth tests are conducted under three different constant stress intensity factor range (SIFR) control at room temperature with R = 0.1 and frequency 10Hz on compact tension (CT) specimen machined at base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM). The experimental fatigue crack growth rate data were obtained for two types of specimens having LT and TL orientations. LT specimens both base metal and weld metal showed higher fatigue crack growth rate as compared to TL specimens. In the lower SIFR region, FCGR were found to be almost 3 times higher in higher SIFR region. The shape parameter of Weibull both LT and TL orientation for FCGR was increased with increasing SIFR, the scale parameter was also increased with increasing SIFR. The smallest value of the shape parameter was shown in weld metal specimens having LT orientation at lower SIFR region.

Parametric investigation of a hybrid vehicle's achievable fuel economy with optimization based energy management strategy

  • The hybrid electric powertrain is a robust solution that allows for major improvements in both fuel economy and emission reduction. In the present study, a through-the-road hybrid vehicle model with an electric motor driving the rear axle and an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) driving the front axle has been constructed. We then present a systematic method for the determination of a real time applicable optimal Energy Management Strategy (EMS) for a hybrid road vehicle. More precisely, we compare the performance of rule-based EMS strategies to an optimization-based strategy, namely ECMS (Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy). The comparison is conducted in parallel with a parameterization of the size of the internal combustion engine and the implementation of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that allows following the line of best fuel economy. For the FTP-75 driving cycle, the constrained engine On-off control algorithm is shown to offer a 28% improvement potential of fuel consumption compared to the conventional internal combustion engine while the ECMS strategy achieves an improved potential of nearly 33%.

  • Recently, localized heavy rain storms have been occurring frequently due to global warming, and it is difficult to shield a large number of facilities against disaster with limited manpower. The unmanned water treatment system uses five senses to analyze various judgment criteria, which are set according to field situations such as machine vibrations, the temperature of bearings, the sound of the operating machines, and the hydraulic pressure, current, and voltage of the hydraulic floodgates. It thus judges normal or abnormal operation status and conducts unmanned control of such machines. It automatically applies a system to the interruption of communications and therefore improves the reliability of its unmanned irrigation facilities. It maximizes the operational efficiency of managers responsible for various fields, enabling them to discharge water before the situation escalates to a crisis within the golden time, and to protect against damage to humans and property.
