  • In this study, a machine vision system using a color recognition method has been designed and developed to automatically sort out specified materials from a mixture, especially Cu and other non-ferrous metal scraps from a mixture of iron scraps. The system consists of a CCD camera, light sources, a frame grabber, conveying devices and an air-nozzle ejector, and is program-controlled by a image processing algorithms. The ejectors designed to be operated by an I/O interface communication with a hardware controller. In the functional tests of the system, its efficiency in the separation of Cu scraps from its mixture with Fe ones reaches to 90% or more at a conveying speed of 15m/min, and thus the system is proven to be excellent in terms of the separating efficiency. Therefore, it is expected that the system can be commercialized in the industry of shredder makers if an automated sorting system of high speed is realized.

  • A rice mill plant with a capacity of 3 t/h was constructed with automated facilities at Chonnam National University. A simulation model was developed with SLAMSYSTEM for evaluation and improving the rice mill process. The developed model was validated in the views of hulling efficiency, milling efficiency, milled rice recovery, other materials produced, at bottlenecks in the processes. The results of hulling efficiency, milling efficiency, milled rice recovery in the simulation were, respectively, 81.1%, 89,5%, and 73.1%, while those of the actual mill plant were 81.5%, 90.2%, and 73.5%. The simulation results including the rates of other materials(chaff, bran, broken rice, stone, etc) produced in the processes were almost similar with those of the actual process. In the simulation the bottlenecks were found out in the process for separating brown rice and sorting colored rice. These phenomena also appeared in the actual process. It needed to increase the hourly capacities of the brown rice separator and the rice color sorter. As the developed model could well express the automated rice mill plant, it could be used for designing and improving rice mill plants.

  • In this paper, a model is presented to estimate a cycle time for completing an operation in a new type of AS/RS which can handle very heavy loads by separating the mechnisms for vertical and horizontal movements. Considering loading/unloading time between devices, we generalize the previous work, Hu et al. [9], which neglected the transfer time. Through the numerical experiments for various situations, we find that the difference of the cycle times between two models is fairly large and conclude that the transfer time between devices cannot be neglected at all.

  • An automated cell tracking system is used to automatically analyze and track the changes in cell behavior in time-lapse cell images acquired using a microscope with a cell culture. Clustering is the partial overlapping of neighboring cells in the process of cell change. Separating clusters into individual cells is very important for cell tracking. In this study, we proposed an algorithm for separating clusters by using ellipse fitting based on a direct least square method. We extracted the contours of clusters, divided them into line segments, and then produced their fitted ellipses using a direct least square method for each line segment. All of the fitted ellipses could be used to separate their corresponding clusters. In experiments, our algorithm separated clusters with average precisions of 91% for two overlapping cells, 84% for three overlapping cells, and about 73% for four overlapping cells.

  • An automated cell tracking system is automatically to analyze and track changes of cell behaviors in time-lapse cell images acquired from microscope in the cell culture. In this paper, we proposed and developed an ellipse fitting based algorithm for separating very small size overlapping cells in a cell image consisted of thousands or ten thousands cells. We were extracted contours of clusters and divided them into line segments and then produced their fitted ellipses for each line segment. By experimentations, our algorithm was separated clusters with average 91% precision for two overlapping cells and average 84% precision for three overlapping cells respectively.

  • Reliability of printed circuit board (PCB), which is based on high integrated circuit technology, is having been important because of development of electric and self-driving car. In order to answer these demand, automated X-ray inspection (AXI) is best solution for PCB non-destructive test. PCB is consist of plastic, copper, and, lead, which have low to high Z-number materials. By using dual energy X-ray imaging, these materials can be inspected accurately and efficiently. Dual energy X-ray imaging, that have the advantage of separating materials, however, need some solution such as energy separation method and enhancing efficiency because PCB has materials that has wide range of Z-number. In this work, we found out several things by analysis of X-ray energy spectrum. Separating between lead and combination of plastic and copper is only possible with energy range not dose. On the other hand, separating between plastic and copper is only with dose not energy range. Moreover the copper filter of high energy part of dual X-ray imaging and 50 kVp of low energy part of dual X-ray imaging is best for efficiency.

  • With growth of nano-bio industry, it is of significant importance to develop an automated system to exploit cell behaviors, including migration, mitosis, apoptosis, shape deformation of individual cells and their interactions among cells in the process of cell growth. In this paper, we proposed preprocessing techniques, a classification method which classifies clusters (overlapping multiple cells) from cells and an automated method which counts the number of cells and clusters in order to analyze 2D or 3D deformations of the cells in the real-time images from microscope in the cell culture. We conducted the 3T3 cell images taken from each thirty-minute interval. It showed the average 99.8% accuracy automatically for separating cells and clusters.

  • Transformin the huge size of drawings into a suitable format for CAD system and recognizng the contents of drawings are the major concerans in the automated analysis of engineering drawings. This paper proposes some methods for text/graphics separation, symbol extraction, vectorization and symbol recognition with the object of applying them to electronic cirucit drawings. We use MBR (Minimum bounding rectangle) and size of isolated region on the drawings for separating text and graphic regions. Characteristics parameters such as the number of pixels, the length of circular constant and the degree of round shape are used for extracting loop symbols and geometric structures for non-loop symbols. To recognize symbols, nearest netighbor between FD (foruier descriptor) of extractd symbols and these of classification reference symbols is used. Experimental results show that the proposed method can generate compact vector representation of extracted symbols and perform the scale change and rotation of extracted symbol using symbol vectorization. Also we achieve an efficient searching of circuit drawings.
