Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of authentic parental competence and awareness of early childhood educational community on the life satisfaction of mothers with preschoolers depending on mothers' employment status. Methods: A total of 238 mothers (98 employed, 130 unemployed) whose children were attending early childhood institutes participated in a survey measuring three variables. Results and Conclusion: The findings of the study were as follows: First, there were positive correlations between authentic parental competence, awareness of early childhood educational community, and life satisfaction, regardless of employment status. Second, comparing employed mothers with unemployed mothers, a common variable affecting life satisfaction was social competence, a sub-variable of authentic parental competence. Further, self-system competence, a sub-factor of authentic parental competence, influenced life satisfaction for employed mothers, and sharing core values, a sub-variable of awareness of the early childhood educational community, influenced life satisfaction for unemployed mothers.

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the "Authentic Parental Competence Scale" for mothers with school-age children. Based on a literature review, the study found that 'authentic parental competence' could be divided into parenting comperence, self-system competence, and social competence. In addition, the scale comprised three factors consisting of 43. The study collected data through behavior event interview(BEI), focus group interview(FGI), and three times Delphi investigation. The scale for mothers of school-age children consisted of a total of 129 items, which included three different dimensions (knowledge, skill, and attitude), and four factors were extracted from factor analysis following a survey of 362 mothers. The factors were labeled as "ability of developmental positive parenting," "ability of playing a role as a citizen and making social contributions," "ability of self-understanding and interpersonal relations," and "ability of self-growth and self-determination." In addition, the results revealed that the "Authentic Parental Competence Scale" showed an appropriate level of construct validity, reliability of the scales, distribution of item response, and item discrimination.

The purpose of this study was to develop and verify the effectiveness of consultant development program enhancing 'authentic parental competence' of the mothers with preschool and school-age children. The objects of this study were 14 mothers with preschool and school-age children. In order to examine the changes of the mother's parental competence, t-test and qualitative analysis on in-depth interviews were conducted. The results of this study were as follows. First, this program had a positive effect on all the sub-factors of mother's 'authentic parental competence'. Second, mothers mentioned that they changed their parenting competence(change of parenting knowledge, beginning of reflective attitude on their parental role), self-system competence(understanding and respective attitude for the mother herself, self-awareness as a spouse, sweet glances and warm understanding as a parent), social competence(sympathetic understanding of her acquaintances, attempt a role as consultant) after this program. Based on these results, the implications and limitations were also discussed.
