  • Based on the success of green tea as a cancer preventive, herbal medicines are now also attracting attention as potential sources of cancer preventive agents. Using inhibition of TNF-$\alpha$ release assay, we studied Acer nikoense (Megusurino-ki in Japanese): Inhibitory potential was found in the leaf extract, and the main active constituents were identified as geraniin and corilagin. The $IC_{50}$/ values for TNF-$\alpha$ release inhibition were 43 $\mu$M for geraniin and 76 $\mu$M for corilagin, whereas that for (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)was 26 $\mu$M.(omitted)

  • Graphene has been attracting much attention owing to its fascinating physical properties such as quantum electronic transport, a tunable band gap, extremely high mobility, elasticity, thermal conductivity, mechanical strength and so on. There have been many efforts to utilize these outstanding properties of graphene for macroscopic applications such as transparent conducting films useful for flexible/stretchable electronics. However, the scale and the quality graphene need to be further enhanced for practical applications by developing more efficient synthesis, transfer, and doping methods. In this tutorial, the recent advances in graphene synthesis and applications will be reviewed, and discuss the future directions of graphene research.

  • Extracellular stresses induce heat shock response and render cells resistant to lethal stresses. Heat shock response involves induction of heat shock proteins (Hsps). Recently the roles of Hsps in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer are attracting increasing attention and have accelerated the study of heat shock response mechanism. This review focuses on the stress sensing steps, molecules involved in Hsps production, diseases related to Hsp malfunctions, and the potential of proteomics as a tool for understanding the complex signaling pathways relevant to these events.

  • Covalently bonded halogen ligands possess unusual charge distributions, attracting both electrophilic and nucleophilic molecular ligands to form halogen bonds. In many biochemical systems, halogen bonds coexist with hydrogen bonds, being complementary to them due to their similar bond strength and dissimilardirectionality. In this study, we directly visualize the individual molecular configuration of chlorinated 1,5-dichloroanthraquinone and brominated 1,5-dibromoanthraquinone molecules on Au(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy. The precise arrangements of observed molecular structures were explained in the context of halogen and hydrogen bonds. We discuss the distances and the strengths of the observed halogen and hydrogen bonds, which are consistent with previous bulk data.

  • Impressive optical properties of graphene have been attracting the interest of researchers, and, recently, the photovoltaic effects of a heterojunction structure embedded with few layer graphene (FLG) have been demonstrated. Here, we show the direct dependence of open-circuit voltage (Voc) on numbers of graphene layers. After unavoidably adsorbed contaminants were removed from the FLGs, by means of in situ annealing, prepared by layer-by-layer transfer of the chemically grown graphene layer, the work functions of FLGs showed a sequential increase as the graphene layers increase, despite of random interlayer-stacking, resulting in the modulation of photovoltaic behaviors of FLGs/Si interfaces.

  • Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) are attracting considerable attention as an important component for emerging optoelectronic applications such as liquid crystal displays, touch panels, and solar cells owing to their attractive combination of low resistivity (<$10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$) and high transparency (>80%) in the visible region. The solution-based process has unique properties of an easy fabrication procedure, scalability, and low cost compared to the conventional vacuum-based process and may prove to be a useful process for fabricating TCEs for future optoelectronic applications demanding large scale and flexibility. In this paper, we focus on the introduction of a solution-based process for TCEs. In addition, we consider the powder materials used to fabricate solution-based TCEs and strategies to improve their transparent conducting properties.

  • The fault-tolerance routing problem is one of the most important issues in the application of the Internet of Things, and has been attracting growing research interests. In order to maintain the communication paths from source sensors to the macronodes, we present a hybrid routing scheme and model, in which alternate paths are created once the previous routing is broken. Then, we propose an improved efficient and intelligent fault-tolerance algorithm (IEIFTA) to provide the fast routing recovery and reconstruct the network topology for path failure in the Internet of Things. In the IEIFTA, mutation direction of the particle is determined by multi-swarm evolution equation, and its diversity is improved by the immune mechanism, which can improve the ability of global search and improve the converging rate of the algorithm. The simulation results indicate that the IEIFTA-based fault-tolerance algorithm outperforms the EARQ algorithm and the SPSOA algorithm due to its ability of fast routing recovery mechanism and prolonging the lifetime of the Internet of Things.

  • Graphene nanoribbons with zigzag-shaped edge (zGNRs) are predicted to be magnetic insulator at the ground state, attracting significant interest in view of spintronic applications [1]. On the other hand, although they are energetically and thermodynamically more favored than zGNRs [2], graphene nanoribbons with armchair-shaped edge (aGNRs) have been less spotlighted than zGNRs due to the absence of magnetism. Herein, based on the combined density functional theory (DFT) and matrix Green's function (MGF) approach, we consider aGNRs functionalized with various molecular groups, and show that the spin polarizations develop for some of the considered aGNR edge functionalization cases. The origin of the induced magnetism will be discussed within the Lieb's theorem [3]. This work will provide a novel guidance for the development of graphene-based spintronic devices.

  • Recently, various convergence technologies are attracting attention due to the block chain innovation technology in the M2M environment. Although the block-chain-based technology is known to be secure in its own right, there are various problems such as security and weight reduction in various M2M environments connected with this. In this paper, we propose a new lightweight method for the hash tree generation of block chains to solve the lightweight problem. It is designed considering extensibility without affecting the existing block chain. Performance analysis shows that the computation performance increases with decreasing the existing hash length.
