  • The water radiolysis in-core at light water reactors (LWRs) produces various radicals with other ionic species/molecules and radioactive nitrogen species in the reactor coolant. Nitrogen species can exist in many different chemical forms and recirculate in water and steam, and consequently contribute to what extent the environmental safety at nuclear power plants. Therefore, a clear understanding of formation kinetics and chemical behaviors of nitrogen species under irradiation is crucial for better insight into the characteristics of major radioactive species released to the main steam or relevant coolant systems and eventually development of advanced processes/methodologies to enhance the environmental safety at nuclear power plants. This paper thus focuses on basic principles on electrochemical interaction kinetics of radiolytic molecules and various nitrogen species in high temperature water, fundamental approaches for calculating thermodynamic values to predict their stability and domain in LWRs, and the effect of nitrogen species on crevice chemistry/corrosion and intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) susceptibility of structure materials in high temperature water.

  • The copper oxide nano powders were synthesized by levitational gas condensation (LGC) method, and were applied to catalyst to fabricate 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-one. Processes of adsorption of Biginelli reaction reagents on the copper nanooxide surface $Cu_2O{\circ}CuO$ were studied by IR-spectroscopy. It was shown that benzaldehyde coordination, acetoacetic ether on the oxide surface is carried out with participation of carbonyl fragments, urea by N-H bonds which affects positively on the reagents reactivity.

  • This study addresses the reference spent fuel and its characteristics for developing a geological repository concept. As a disposal capacity of the reference repository system to be developed, spent fuel inventories were projected based on the basis of the Nuclear Energy Plan of the Long-term National Power Program. The reference spent fuel encompassing a variability in characteristics of all existing and future spent fuels of interest was defined. Key parameters in the reference fuel screening processes were the nuclear and mechanical design parameters and the burnup histories for existing spent fuels as of 1996 and for future spent fuels with the more extended burnup the initial enrichment and its expected turnup. The selected reference fuel was characterized in terms of initial enrichment, bumup, dimension, gross weight and age. Also the isotopic composition and the radiological properties are quantitatively identified. This information provided in this study could be used as input for repository system development and performance assessment and applied in fuel material balance evaluation for the various types of back-end fuel cycle studies.

  • An Ag/Ni bi-layer sheet was fabricated by the combination of powder metallurgy, diffusion bonding, cold rolling and texture annealing processes. After heat treating the cold rolled thin Ag/Ni bi-layer sheet at $900^{\circ}C$ for 4h, the excellent cube texture was developed on nickel surface. Qualitative chemical analysis using EPMA showed that inter diffusions of Ni and Ag in Ag/Ni bi-layer composite were negligible. It showed that Ag can be used as a chemical barrier for Ni and vice versa.

  • A Ni/Ag/Stainless steel 310S(SS310S) multi-layer sheet has been fabricated by a combination of vacuum brazing, cold rolling and texture annealing processes. After heat-treating the thin Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2h, development of (100)<001>cube texture on Ni surface was revealed by (111) pole figure. Quantitative chemical analysis was made by EPMA for the cross-section of the Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet. EPMA results showed that Ag diffusion into the Ni layer, which may suppress the cube texture development, was negligible. A small amount of Cr atoms were detected in the Ni layer. It showed that Ag can be used as a chemical barrier of alloying element atoms in Ni layer for the Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet and a strong cube texture was developed for the Ni layer in the Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet.

  • Radiation hardening is a multiscale phenomenon involving various processes over a wide range of time and length. We present a multiscale model for estimating the amount of radiation hardening in pressure vessel steel in the environment of a light water reactor. The model comprises two main parts: molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and a point defect cluster (PDC) model. The MD simulation was used to investigate the primary damage caused by displacement cascades. The PDC model mathematically formulates interactions between point defects and their clusters, which explains the evolution of microstructures. We then used a dislocation barrier model to calculate the hardening due to the PDCs. The key input for this multiscale model is a neutron spectrum at the inner surface of reactor pressure vessel steel of the Younggwang Nuclear Power Plant No.5. A combined calculation from the MD simulation and the PDC model provides a convenient tool for estimating the amount of radiation hardening.

  • Demand of fluid flow visualization has increased in industrial processes, because medical imaging technology is highly developed. As a part of the industrial process imaging technology, industrial single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system was developed to measure the cross-sectional distribution of the process fluid. The SPECT consists of 36 NaI (Tl) detectors with the hexagonal configuration. Reconstructed images were acquired for various positions of radioactive source to estimate SPECT device performance. To evaluate the reliability of the experimental results, the Monte Carlo simulation results are compared with experimental results. In general, the experimental and simulation results were consistent. However, as the source position was getting far from the center of the reactor, the accuracy of reconstructed images was compromised. It seems to be due to the inconsistent spatial resolution of the collimators according to the source position.

  • Area selective atomic layer deposition (AS-ALD) is a bottom-up nanopattern fabrication method that can grow the ALD films only on the desired substrate areas without using photolithography and etching processes. Particularly, AS-ALD has attracted great attention in the semiconductor manufacturing process due to its advantage in reducing edge placement error by fabricating self-aligned patterns. In this paper, the basic principles and characteristics of AS-ALD are described. In addition, various approaches for achieving AS-ALD with excellent selectivity were comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the technology development to overcome the selectivity limit of AS-ALD was introduced along with future prospects.
