The adsorption and decomposition of NO on a stepped Pt(111) surface have been studied using thermal desorption spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. NO adsorbs molecularly in two different states of the terrace and the step, which are distinguishable in thermal desorption spectra. NO dissociates via a bent species at the step sites on the basis of vibrational spectrum data reported previously. The dissociation of NO is an activation process : the activation energy is estimated to be about 2 kcal/mol. Increase in the NO dissociation with adsorption temperature is explained by a process controlled by diffusion of the dissociated atomic nitrogen from the step to the terrace of the surface. In addition to NO and N2, the desorption peak of N2O is observed. We conclude that the formation of N2O is attributed to surface reaction of NO and N adsorbed on the surface.
Molecular dynamics (MD) systems are highly nonlinear and nonlocal, and the conventional model order reduction methods are ineffective for MD systems. The RBF-POD method (Lee and Chen, 2013) employed a radial basis function (RBF) approximated potential energies and inter-atomic forces of MD systems under the framework of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method for the reduced-order modeling of MD systems. In this work, we focus on the numerical procedures of the RBF-POD method and demonstrate how to apply this approach to the modeling of ds-DNA molecules under stretching and bending conditions.
Graphene was epitaxially grown on a 6H-SiC(0001) substrate by thermal decomposition of SiC under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we monitored the evolution of the graphene growth as a function of the temperature. We found that the evaporation of Si occurred dominantly from the corner of the step rather than on the terrace. A carbon-rich $(6{\sqrt{3}}{\times}6{\sqrt{3}})R30^{\circ}$ layer, monolayer graphene, and bilayer graphene were identified by measuring the roughness, step height, and atomic structures. Defect structures such as nanotubes and scattering defects on the monolayer graphene are also discussed. Furthermore, we confirmed that the Dirac points (ED) of the monolayer and bilayer graphene were clearly resolved by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS).
Let α ∈ (0, ∞), p ∈ (0, ∞) and q(·) : ℝn → [1, ∞) satisfy the globally log-Hölder continuity condition. We introduce the weak Herz-type Hardy spaces with variable exponents via the radial grand maximal operator and to give its maximal characterizations, we establish a version of the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator M and the Fefferman-Stein vector-valued inequality on the weak Herz spaces with variable exponents. We also obtain the atomic and the molecular decompositions of the weak Herz-type Hardy spaces with variable exponents. As an application of the atomic decomposition we provide various equivalent characterizations of our spaces by means of the Lusin area function, the Littlewood-Paley g-function and the Littlewood-Paley $g^*_{\lambda}$-function.
Dual-energy CT (DECT) provides insights into the material properties of tissues and can differentiate between tissues with similar attenuation on conventional single-energy imaging. In the conventional CT scanner, differences in the X-ray attenuation between adjacent structures are dependent on the atomic number of the materials involved, whereas in DECT, the difference in the attenuation is dependent on both the atomic number and electron density. The basic principle of DECT is to obtain two datasets with different X-ray energy levels from the same anatomic region and material decomposition based on attenuation differences at different energy levels. In this article, we discuss the clinical applications of DECT and its potential robust improvements in performance and postprocessing capabilities.
We have produced nanophase iron clusters inside a gas cell by decomposing iron pentacarbonyls from the mixture of ~20 Torr Fe(CO)5/~3 Torr SF6 with a pulsed CO2 laser. The product displayed a black tint. Its composition was identified to be mostly iron from an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectrum. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates a body-centered cubic structure for the cluster. A transmission electron micrograph proves that their diameter ranges between 50 and 70 Å and their average diameter is 60 Å.
