  • The land surface temperature (LST) can be defined as a weighted average temperature of components which constitute a pixel. The coefficients of split-window algorithm for MTSAT-1R were obtained by means of a statistical regression analysis from radiative transfer simulations using MODTRAN 4.0 for a wide range of atmospheric, satellite viewing angle (SVA) and lapse rate conditions. 6 types of atmospheric profile data imbedded in the MODTRAN 4 are used for the radiative transfer simulations. The RMSE is clearly larger on warm and humid profiles than cold and dry profiles, especially when the satellite viewing angle and lapse rate are large. The derivation of LST equations according to the atmospheric profiles clearly decreased the RMSE without regard to the SVA and lapse rate. The bias and RMSE are decreased as the more controls factors included. This preliminary result indicates that the characteristics of atmosphere, SVA and lapse rate should be included in the LST equation.

  • This study evaluated indoor environmental characteristics in an office room equipped both with ventilation window system and central cooling system. Fresh air is supplied only by the central cooling system whereas indoor air is discharged outside through both ceiling diffuser and a ventilation window system. Numerical study is conducted by changing the volumetric flow rates of exhaust ports of each system. For estimating the performance of this coupled system, $CO_2$ concentration and Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) were calculated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. The more the ceiling diffuser exhausts indoor air, the more the $CO_2$ concentration decreases. However, when the ventilation window system exhausts more indoor air, thermal comfort level gets improved in the office room with cooling system. Therefore, when the ventilation window system is operated, the coupled operation with central cooling system should be considered for enhancing indoor air quality and thermal comfort, together.

  • To retrieve Sea Surface Temperature(SST) from NOAA-AVHRR imagery the spilt window atmospheric correction algorithm is generally used. Recently, there have been various new algorithms developed to process these data, namely the variable-coefficient split-window, the R54 transmittance-ratio method, fixed-coefficient nonlinear algorithm, dynamic water vapour (DWV) correction method, Dynamic Water Vapour and Temperature algorithm (DWVT). We used MCSST (Multi-Channel Sea surface temperature) and NLSST(Non linear sea surface temperature) algorithms in this study. The study area is around the Korea sea area (Yellow Sea). We compared and analyzed with various methods by applying each Ocean in-situ data and satellite data. The primary aim of study is to verify and optimize algorithms. Finally, this study proposes an optimized algorithm for SST retrieval.

  • An ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model is applied for Typhoon Wukong (200610) to investigate the performance of ensemble forecasts depending on experimental configurations of the EnKF. In addition, the ensemble sensitivity analysis is applied to the forecast and analysis ensembles generated in EnKF, to investigate the possibility of using the ensemble sensitivity analysis as the adaptive observation guidance. Various experimental configurations are tested by changing model error, ensemble size, assimilation time window, covariance relaxation, and covariance localization in EnKF. First of all, experiments using different physical parameterization scheme for each ensemble member show less root mean square error compared to those using single physics for all the forecast ensemble members, which implies that considering the model error is beneficial to get better forecasts. A larger number of ensembles are also beneficial than a smaller number of ensembles. For the assimilation time window, the experiment using less frequent window shows better results than that using more frequent window, which is associated with the availability of observational data in this study. Therefore, incorporating model error, larger ensemble size, and less frequent assimilation window into the EnKF is beneficial to get better prediction of Typhoon Wukong (200610). The covariance relaxation and localization are relatively less beneficial to the forecasts compared to those factors mentioned above. The ensemble sensitivity analysis shows that the sensitive regions for adaptive observations can be determined by the sensitivity of the forecast measure of interest to the initial ensembles. In addition, the sensitivities calculated by the ensemble sensitivity analysis can be explained by dynamical relationships established among wind, temperature, and pressure.

  • As the number of nursery facilities and infants who stay there is continuously increasing, IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) of nursery facilities should be managed strictly and thoroughly because infants are more susceptible to infections due to their low resistivity. In this study the characteristics of IAQ and ventilation associated factors were investigaed for suggesting a desirable condition for IAQ management. Environmental factors were not much related to IAQ characteristics rather than internal factors such as structures of the room. And the positive effect of ventilation on IAQ was obvious and seemed to hinge on factors related to window area especially window/wall ratio. Results of this study indicate that the structure with broader window area of a room and frequnet ventilation can be an effective way for keeping IAQ of nursery facilities clean and safe.

  • Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is attracting increasing attention as an eco-friendly technology that can save cooling energy by not requiring an external power supply. An ideal PDRC structure should improve solar reflectance and emissivity within the atmospheric spectral window. Early designs of photonic crystal materials demonstrated the benefits of PDRC. Since then, functional arrangements of polymer-based radiative cooling materials have played an important role and are rapidly expanding. This review summarizes the known inorganic, organic, and hybrid materials for PDRC. The review also provides a complete understanding of PDRC and highlights its practical applications.

  • This study compares the relative accuracy and consistency of four split-window land surface temperature (LST) algorithms (Becker and Li, Kerr et ai., Price, Ulivieri et al.) using 24 sets of Terra (Aqua)/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, observed ground grass temperature and air temperature over South Korea. The effective spectral emissivities of two thermal infrared bands have been retrieved by vegetation coverage method using the normalized difference vegetation index. The intercomparison results among the four LST algorithms show that the three algorithms (Becker-Li, Price, and Ulivieri et al.) show very similar performances. The LST estimated by the Becker and Li's algorithm is the highest, whereas that by the Kerr et al.'s algorithm is the lowest without regard to the geographic locations and seasons. The performance of four LST algorithms is significantly better during cold season (night) than warm season (day). And the LST derived from Terra/MODIS is closer to the observed LST than that of Aqua/MODIS. In general, the performances of Becker-Li and Ulivieri et al algorithms are systematically better than the others without regard to the day/night, seasons, and satellites. And the root mean square error and bias of Ulivieri et al. algorithm are consistently less than that of Becker-Li for the four seasons.
