Column tests were carried out to examine the effect of surfactant solution conditions on surfactant-enhanced remediation of contaminated soil. The selected conditions of the surfactant solution were concentration and pH. 1,2,4-trichlo-robenzene (TCB) was chosen as the model hydrophobic organic substances. Sodium diphenyl oxide disulfonate (DOSL) and octylphenoxypoly ethoxyethanol (OPEE) surfactants were selected for this study. Two Iowa soils, Fruitfield sand and Webster clay loam, were leached with surfactant solution. The test results revealed that an optimum condition was achieved for 4 %(v/v) of concentration and 10 of pH, respectively. The maximum recoveries of added TCB (93-98%) were obtained when optimal conditions of each surfactant solution parameter were simultaneously met. The optimum conditions of these parameters may be useful for surfactant-assisted remediation in soil contaminated by TCB.
The main parameter commonly used to evaluate spray distribution is spray angle. Spray angle is important because it influences the axial and radial distribution of the fuel. Spray angles were measured and compared for the two non-air assisted injectors such as 2hole-2stream 4hole-1stream injectors used for port fuel injection gasoline engines with n-heptane as a fuel by three different measuring techniques, i.e., digital image processing, shadowgraphy, and spray patternator, respectively. Fuel was injected with the injection pressures of 0.2-0.35 MPa into the room temperature and atmospheric pressure environment. In digital image processing approach, the selection of the transmittance level is critical to obtain the edge of spray and hence to measure the spray angle. From the measurement results by the shadowgraphy technique, it is dear that the spray angle is varied during the spray injection period. The measurement results from spray patternator show that the different spray angles exist in different region. Spray angle increases with the increase in the injection pressure. it is suggested that the spray angle and stream separated angle should be specified when spray is characterized for 2hole-2stream injector, because spray angle is much different though stream separated angle is same. It was also considerably affected by the measurement techniques introduced in this experimental work. However, the optimal axial distance for measuring the spray angle seems to be at least 60-80 mm from the injector tip for two non-air assisted injectors.

A 4${\times}10^{19}cm^{3}$ carbon-doped base AlGaAs/GaAs HBY was grown using carbontetracholoride(CCl$_4$) by atmospheric pressure MOCVD. Abruptness of emitter-base junction was characterized by SIMS(secondary ion mass spectorscopy) and the doping concentration of base layer was confirmed by DXRD(double crystal X-ray diffractometry). Mesa-type HBTs were fabricated using wet etching and lift-off technique. The base sheet resistance of R$_{sheet}$=550${\Omega}$/square was measured using TLM(transmission line model) method. The fabricated transistor achieved a collector-base junction breakdown voltage of BV$_{CBO}$=25V and a critical collector current density of J$_{O}$=40kA/cm$^2$ at V$_{CE}$=2V. The 50$\times$100$\mu$$^2$ emitter transistor showed a common emitter DC current gain of h$_{FE}$=30 at a collector current density of JS1CT=5kA/cm$^2$ and a base current ideality factor of ηS1EBT=1.4. The high frequency characterization of 5$\times$50$\mu$m$^2$ emitter transistor was carried out by on-wafer S-parameter measurement at 0.1~18.1GHz. Current gain cutoff frequency of f$_{T}$=27GHz and maximum oscillation frequency of f$_{max}$=16GHz were obtained from the measured Sparameter and device parameters of small-signal lumped-element equivalent network were extracted using Libra software. The fabricated HBT was proved to be useful to high speed and power spplications.
The few observed data related snowmelt was the major cause of difficulty in extracting snowmelt factors such as snow cover area, snow depth and depletion curve. Remote sensing technology is very effective to observe a wide area. Although many researchers have used remote sensing for snow observation, there were a few discussions on the characteristics of spatial and temporal variation. Snow cover maps were derived from NOAA AVHRR images for the winter seasons from 1997 to 2006. Distributed snow depth was mapped by overlapping between snow cover maps and interpolated snowfall maps from 69 meteorological observation stations. Model parameters (Snow Cover Area: SCA, snow depth, Snow cover Depletion Curve: SDC) building for 5 major watersheds in South Korea. Especially SDC is important parameter of snowmelt model.
NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), which is broadly used as short-term data composite, is an important parameter for climate change and long-term land surface monitoring. Although atmospheric correction is performed, NDVI dramatically appears several low peak noise in the long-term time series. They are related to various contaminated sources, such as cloud masking problem and wet ground condition. This study suggests a simple method through harmonic analysis for reducing NDVI noise using SPOT/VGT NDVI 10-day MVC data. The harmonic analysis method is compared with the polynomial regression method suggested previously. The polynomial regression method overestimates the NDVI values in the time series. The proposed method showed an improvement in NDVI correction of low peak and overestimation.

Since radar wind profiler (RWP) provides wind field data with high time and space resolution in all weather conditions, their verification of the accuracy and quality is essential. The simultaneous wind measurement from rawinsonde is commonly used to evaluate wind vectors from RWP. In this study, the simulation algorithm which produces the spectrum and raw time series (I/Q) data from the average values of moments is presented as a step-by-step verification method for the signal processing algorithm. The possibility of the simulation algorithm was also confirmed through comparison with the raw data of LAP-3000. The Doppler power spectrum was generated by assuming the density function of the skew-normal distribution and by using the moment values as the parameter. The simulated spectrum was generated through random numbers. In addition, the coherent averaged I/Q data was generated by random phase and inverse discrete Fourier transform, and raw I/Q data was generated through the Dirichlet distribution.
This study was objected to show the complexity of groundwater flow system in a site-scale area as a design parameter of the groundwater monitoring network for early detection of pollutant leakage from a potential source of groundwater contamination (e.g., storage tank). Around the tanks, three monitoring wells were installed at about 22~25 m deep and groundwater level and temperature had been monitored for 22 months by 2-minute interval, and then compared with precipitation and temperature data from nearby weather station. Annual variation of groundwater level and its response to precipitation event, variation of groundwater temperature and delayed response to that of atmospheric temperature indicate the complexity of groundwater flow and flow paths even in the relatively small area. Thus, groundwater monitoring network for early detection of contaminant leakage should be designed with full consideration of the complexity of groundwater flow system, identified from the detailed hydrogeological investigation of the site.

The radar relationship was estimated for the selected rainfall event at Yeongchun station within Chungjudam basin where the discharge record was the range of from 1,000 CMS to 9,000 CMS. By calibrating the rainfall coefficient parameter estimated by radar relationship in small hydrology basin, rainfall with the topography properties was calculated. Three different rainfall estimation methods were compared:(1) radar relationship method (2) Thiessen method (3) Isohyetal method (4) Inverse distance method. Basin model was built by applying HEC-GeoHMS which uses digital elevation model to extract hydrological characteristic and generate river network. The proposed basin model was used as an input to HEC-HMS to build a runoff model. The runoff estimation model applying radar data showed the good result. It is proposed that the radar data would produce more rapid and accurate runoff forecasting especially in the case of the partially concentrated rainfall due to the atmospheric change. The proposed radar relationship could efficiently estimate the rainfall on the study area(Chungjudam basin).

In order to investigate the factors and processes affecting the vertical distributions of ozone, we analyzed the ozone profile data measured using ozonesonde from 1995 to 1997 at Pohang city, Korea. In the course of our study, we analyzed temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of ozone at four different heights: surface (100m), troposphere (10km), lower stratosphere (20km), and middle stratosphere (30km). Despite its proximity to a local, but major, industrial complex known as Pohang Iron and Steel Co. (POSCO), the concentrations of surface ozone in the study area were comparable to those typically observed from rural and/or unpolluted area. In addition, the findings of relative enhancement of ozone at this height, especially between spring and summer may be accounted for by the prevalence of photochemical reactions during that period of year. The temporal distribution patterns for both 10 and 20km heights were quite compatible despite large differences in their altitudes with such consistency as spring maxima and summer minima. Explanations for these phenomena may be sought by the mixed effects of various processes including: ozone transport across two heights, photochemical reaction, the formation of inversion layer, and so on. However, the temporal distribution pattern for the middle stratosphere (30km) was rather comparable to that of the surface. We also evaluated total ozone concentration of the study area using Brewer spectrophotometer. The total ozone concentration data were compared with those derived by combining the data representing stratospheric layers via Umkehr method. The results of correlation analysis showed that total ozone is negatively correlated with cloud cover but not with such parameter as UV-B. Based on our study, we conclude that areal characteristics of Pohang which represents a typical coastal area may be quite important in explaining the distribution patterns of ozone not only from surface but also from upper atmosphere.

We conducted a sensitivity test of Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES), in which the influence of biophysical parameters on the simulation of gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (RE) was investigated for two typical ecosystems in Korea. For this test, we employed the whole-year observation of eddy-covariance fluxes measured in 2006 at two KoFlux sites: (1) a deciduous forest in complex terrain in Gwangneung and (2) a farmland with heterogeneous mosaic patches in Haenam. Our analysis showed that the simulated GPP was most sensitive to the maximum rate of RuBP carboxylation and leaf nitrogen concentration for both ecosystems. RE was sensitive to wood biomass parameter for the deciduous forest in Gwangneung. For the mixed farmland in Haenam, however, RE was most sensitive to the maximum rate of RuBP carboxylation and leaf nitrogen concentration like the simulated GPP. For both sites, the JULES model overestimated both GPP and RE when the default values of input parameters were adopted. Considering the fact that the leaf nitrogen concentration observed at the deciduous forest site was only about 60% of its default value, the significant portion of the model's overestimation can be attributed to such a discrepancy in the input parameters. Our finding demonstrates that the abovementioned key biophysical parameters of the two ecosystems should be evaluated carefully prior to any simulation and interpretation of ecosystem carbon exchange in Korea.
