  • The long-term light curves of the novalikes TT Ari, KR Aur, AM Her and MV Lyr, were compiled and analysed for solar-like cyclical behaviour. The frequency analysis showed long-term cyclical modulations of the brightness of the stars, which can be ascribed to changes of the radii of the late type secondaries in order of ${\Delta}R/R{\simeq} 10^{-4}-10^{-5}$.

  • The Palomar Transient Factory is a project making use of a Schmidt 48 inch telescope located on the Palomar Mountain, which is surveying the sky with dynamical cadences. It was deployed in 2009 and the observed sky region is over 1200 square degrees. We have studied the long-term periodic variabilities of the known galactic cataclysmic variables (CVs). More than 20 of the sources had been found to have long term periodic signals, ranging from several tens of days to several hundreds of days. Some possible scenarios are proposed to explain the results, such as a magnetic field change of the companion star, precession of the accretion disk, triple systems and superoutburst cycles. Some preliminary discussion will be presented in this article.

  • Astronomy is a popular topic for the public in term of astronomical phenomenon such as occultations, solar and lunar eclipses or meteor showers. In term of education, astronomy also is popular as one of the world Science Olympiads. Social media, as the new trend in communicating and connecting people, plays a significant role in increasing the size of the astronomy community. Beyond IYA 2009, more and more astronomy activities have been done in many places in Indonesia. New astronomy communities have been formed in several cities and public engagement is also high in social media especially on Facebook and Twitter. In this paper, we will discuss the lesson learned from astronomy outreach achievements in Indonesia and the need for citizen science projects as a distance learning tool for the public as part of astronomy development in Indonesia. We argue and propose that this project will be also important up to a regional scope.

  • We present long-term optical to NIR data of the tidal disruption object, Swift J1644+57. The data were obtained with CQUEAN, UKIRT WFCAM observations. We analyze the morphology of the host galaxy of this object and decompose the bulge component using high resolution HST WFC3 images. We conclude that the host galaxy is bulge dominant. We also estimate the multi-band fluxes of the host galaxy through the light curves based on the long-term observational data. We fit the SED models to the multi-band fluxes of the host galaxy and determine its stellar mass. Finally, we estimate the mass of the central super massive black hole which is responsible for the tidal disruption event. The estimated stellar mass and black hole mass are ${\sim}10^{9.1}M_{\odot}$, ${\sim}10^{6.8}M_{\odot}$, respectively. We compare our results to other previous estimates.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute(KASI) joined the Gemini Observatory as a 'Limited-Term Partner' in 2014, and is providing the Gemini facility for Korean community through K-GMT Science Program starting from 2015. The access to Gemini facility is expected to open a new window of opportunities in the field of optical and infrared observational researches and to help efficient development of science cases for GMT. We will present the short and long-term expectations and possible outcomes of the KASI-Gemini partnership.

  • We investigate a relative contribution from short to long-term flaring rate to predicting M and X-class flare probabilities. In this study, we consider magnetic parameters summarizing distribution and non-potentiality by Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseimic and Magnetic Imager and flare list by Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites. A short-term rate is the number of major flares that occurred in an given active region (AR) within one day before the prediction time. A mid-term rate is a mean flaring rate from the AR appearance day to one day before the prediction time. A long-term rate is a rate determined from a relationship between magnetic parameter values of ARs and their flaring rates from 2010 May to 2015 April. In our model, the predicted rate is given by the combination of weighted three rates satisfying that their sum of the weights is 1. We calculate Brier skill scores (BSSs) for investigating weights of three terms giving the best prediction performance using ARs from 2015 April to 2018 April. The BSS (0.22) of the model with only long-term is higher than that with only short-term or mid-term. When short or mid-term are considered additionally, the BSSs are improved. Our model has the best performance (BSS = 0.29) when all three terms are considered, and their relative contribution from short to long-term rate are 19%, 23%, and 58%, respectively. This model seems to be more effective when predicting active solar ARs having several major flares.

  • As of July 24th 208, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has entered into a formal partnership with the Gemini Observatory. The Gemini Observatory has been operated by Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) on behalf of the International Partnership that includes Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, United States, and Korea as the new partner country. Effective from the 209A Call for Proposals (CfP), any researchers affiliated with Korean institutes are eligible to apply for various observing opportunities in both hemispheres covered by Gemini North in Hawaii and by Gemini South in Chile. We are going to share the importance and long-term perspectives of the KASI-Gemini Partnership in the context of the next decade of Korean optical astronomy researches.
