This study involves investigating the correlation between variation of internal structure and heating temperature of alkali-activated fire protection materials using fly ash. Dehydration and micro crack thermal expansion occur in cement hydrates of cementitious materials heated by fire. Internal structure difference due to both the dehydration of cement hydrates and pore solution causes and influences changes in the properties of materials. Also, this study is concerned with change in microstructure and dehydration of the alkali-activated fire protection materials at high temperatures. The testing methods of alkali-activated fire protection materials in high temperature properties are make use of TG-DSC and mercury intrusion porosimetry measurements. The study results show that the alkali-activated fire resistant finishing material composed of potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash has the high temperature thermal stability. These thermal stability is caused by the ceramic binding capacity induced by alkali activation reaction.
Liquid fertilizers made from livestock manure contain high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus and thus are used as a fertilizer. However, excessive use of liquid fertilizer causes eutrophication of agricultural land and nonpoint source pollution. In this study, as a means of lowering the nutrient concentrations, struvite ($MgNH_4PO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$) production from the liquid fertilizer was investigated. When liquid fertilizers produced in Gyeonggido were analyzed, its characteristics differed by region and season, but the phosphorus concentration was commonly lower than that of nitrogen. When $K_2HPO_4$ and $MgCl_2$ were added to the liquid fertilizers, the optimal pH for struvite formation was pH 9.5. For environmentally friendly sources of magnesium and phosphate, ferronickel slag (FNS) and sewage sludge ash (SSA) were suspended in deionized water and extracted by sulfuric acid with various mass ratios. The optimum conditions for extracting FNS and SSA were 4.0 M sulfuric acid and 0.35 mass ratio of sulfuric acid to sewage sludge ash, respectively. For forming struvite, 0.233 L of SSA leachate (SSAL) was added into 0.3 L of liquid fertilizer containing 2,586 mg/L of ammonia and 110 mg/L of phosphate, pH was then adjusted to pH 9.5 using 10 M of NaOH. Afterwards 0.333 L of FNS leachate (FNSL) was added to this mixed solution. After a reaction for 1 hr at room temperature, the remaining concentrations of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate were less than 50 mg/L, 500 mg/L and 150 mg/L, respectively, and 30 g of precipitates were obtained, most of which were struvite.
We studied a selective recovery condition of vanadium (V) from FALL (Fly Ash Leach Liquor) produced at a fossil fuel power station using heavy oil. By applying a spectroscopy to quantify the V in a sample, we identified a concentration range V interfered by on presence of metals such as Ni, Fe Also, the optimal vanadium precipitation rate according to the amount of 5.0M $NH_3$ loaded to the sample, solution pH and stirring time. As a result of the experiment, the maximum selective recovery ratio of V was achieved to be higher than 91.5% when the stirring duration was less than 1 minute at pH 7.0, and $25^{\circ}C$.

As rice husk ash (RHA) is not produced in controlled manufacturing process like cement, its properties vary significantly even within the same lot. In fact, properties of Rice Husk Ash Based Concrete (RHABC) are largely dictated by uncertainty leading to huge deviations from their expected values. This paper proposes a Robust Cost Optimization (RCO) procedure for RHABC, which minimizes such unwanted deviation due to uncertainty and provides guarantee of achieving desired strength and workability with least possible cost. The RCO simultaneously minimizes cost of RHABC production and its deviation considering feasibility of attaining desired strength and workability in presence of uncertainty. RHA related properties have been modeled as uncertain-but-bounded type as associated probability density function is not available. Metamodeling technique is adopted in this work for generating explicit expressions of constraint functions required for formulation of RCO. In doing so, the Moving Least Squares Method is explored in place of conventional Least Square Method (LSM) to ensure accuracy of the RCO. The efficiency by the proposed MLSM based RCO is validated by experimental studies. The error by the LSM and accuracy by the MLSM predictions are clearly envisaged from the test results. The experimental results show good agreement with the proposed MLSM based RCO predicted mix properties. The present RCO procedure yields RHABC mixes which is almost insensitive to uncertainty (i.e., robust solution) with nominal deviation from experimental mean values. At the same time, desired reliability of satisfying the constraints is achieved with marginal increment in cost.
Zeolite A was synthesized from coal fly ash by the microwave heating as well as the conventional heating method. The effects of reaction time, the amount of sodium aluminate, and the reaction temperature on the crystallization of zeolite A were investigated. The optimum crystallization time was about 3 to 6 h in the temperature range of $80{\sim}100^{\circ}C$. The amount of sodium aluminate was found to be optimum when the molar ratio $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ of starting solution was in the range of 0.44 to 1.05 at above $90^{\circ}C$, However, The more amount of sodium aluminate was required to get zeolite A at $80^{\circ}C$. Although the rate of crystallization was slightly faster in the microwave heating than that in the conventional heating, the reaction time need to obtain fully crystallized zeolite A was similar in both methods. Therefore, the influence of the microwave heating was not so large compared with the conventional heating in the synthesis of zeolite A from coal fly ash.
Industrial use of waste oyster shells is limited because of requiring excessive energy for converting natural oyster shells in the form of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) into calcium oxide (CaO) for this purpose. This study aimed to develop energy-saving process for producing solidifying agent using waste oyster shells for backfill materials. It was suggested that oyster shells were converted to calcium sulfates which were mixed with sodium hydroxide solution and red clay, forming solid specimen. The optimal concentrations of sulfuric acid for sulfation of oyster shell and sodium hydroxide to generate calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$), were determined. Unconfined compressive strength of solid specimen increased with increasing the content of solidifying agent while it increased also with increasing ratio of natural oyster shells to coal ash. The result clearly demonstrates that solidifying agent consisting of sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell, coal ash, and sodium hydroxide solution, can be effectively utilized for preparing backfill materials using natural oyster shell and coal ash. Sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell-based solidifying agent has not been previously developed and will contribute to broaden industrial application of waste oyster shells.
The objective of this study was to investigate the efficient pretreatment method for bioethanol production from rice hull. Ammonia and sodium hydroxide as an alkaline solution and dilute sulfuric acid as an acidic solution were used in a batch reactor under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. The highest enzymatic saccharification efficiency of 82.8% and ash removal rate of 94.7% were obtained in the dilute sulfuric acid treated sample after the sodium hydroxide solution treatment. The enzymatic saccharification efficiencies and ash removals of pretreated rice hull samples have very similar variation tendency. This means that the maximum obstructive factor for the enzymatic saccharification of rice hull is the ash (silicate) content in biomass. The findings suggest that the combined sodium hydroxide-dilute sulfuric acid treatment system under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions is a promising pretreatment method to enhance the enzymatic saccharification of the silica-rich biomass.

This study is a fundamental research to test the applicability of powdered MSWI(Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator) ash melted slag as a seed Crystal for crystallization reaction. Powdered ash melted slag was melted at $1100^{\circ}C$ and ground to lesser than 0.35mm. According to the result of the tests, calcium, enough for crystallization reaction, was eluted from powdered ash melted slag. Moreover, sample(Phosphorus concentration is under 10 mg/L), more than 90% of Phosphorus can be removed. So we rectify the Phosphorus concentration to 100 mg/L. Alkalinity, being well known that it interferes crystallization reaction, effect was studied for synthetic solution(100 mg/L initial Phosphorus concentration, 50 mg/L calcium, pH 8, 1% powdered ash melted slag dosage). For this result, we know that Phosphorus removal is hindered by alkalinity. In addition, the effect of reaction temperature was performed at the same method. The reaction velocity was increased through raising the reaction temperature.
It was investigated that effects of NaOH concentration on synthesis of mesoporous materials using municipal solid waste incinerator ash slag (MSWI-ash slag). In order to increase the purity and maximize the amount of extracted Si content the raw MSWI-ash slag was mechanically activated. Extraction of Si from the MSWI-ash slag was carried out by alkali treatment using concentrated NaOH solution, which varied from 1M to 4M. Physical properties (i.e., pore size, specific surface area and total pore volume) of the synthesized mesoporous silica were also evaluated as a function of NaOH concentration via BET, SEM, TEM and small-angle X-ray scattering analyses. Over the entire range of NaOH concentration investigated (i.e., 1-4M), the synthesized mesoporous materials were determined to be SBA-15, which exhibited a hexagonal structure with the pore size of approximately 7 nm. On the other hand, specific surface area and total pore volume increased with NaOH concentration up to 3M while the values decreased at 4M, indicating that the optimal NaOH concentration for the synthesized mesoporous silica was approximately 3M. Further comparison analysis between two conditions (3M versus 4M) showed that the decrease in two physical properties at 4M NaOH concentration was likely due to the potential inhibition by excess Na ions on the formation of mesophase and the consequent increase of pore wall thickness by remaining Si ions.
Heteropolysaccharides isolated from liquid cultures of nine Tremella species contained 0.3 to 1.2% protein, 2.7 to 5% ash, 0.9 to 3.4% acetyl groups, 76.5 to 84.2% carbohydrates and trace amounts of starch. The polysaccharides in aqueous solution were slightly acidic (pH 5.1 to 5.6). They consisted of the following monomeric sugars: fucose, ribose, xylose, arabinose, mannose, galactose, glucose and glucuronic acid. The backbones of the polysaccharide structures consisted of $\alpha$-(1$\rightarrow$3)-links while the side chains were $\beta$-linked.
