  • In order to evaluate the seismic performance of a reinforced concrete building structure, four different analyses are carried out. Firstly, conventional pushover analysis with code-specified inverted triangular load pattern is conducted. Secondly, the pushover analysis with uniform load pattern is performed. Thirdly, adaptive pushover analyses with spectral amplification for both EC 8 artificial and Northridge earthquake are carried out. Lastly, Incremental dynamic analyses under a number of scaled PGA for both EC 8 artificial and Northridge earthquake record are performed. Comparative studies demonstrate that the adaptive pushover analysis may be able to explain the response characteristics that conventional pushover analysis with fixed load distribution fails to capture.

  • The principal context of this research is the approach to an artificial neural network algorithm which solves multivariable nonlinear equation systems by estimating the state of line power flow. First a dynamical neural network with feedback is used to find the minimum value of the objective function at each iteration of the state estimator algorithm. In second step a two-layer neural network structures is derived to implement all of the different matrix-vector products that arise in neural network state estimator analysis. For hardware requirements, as they relate to the total number of internal connections, the architecture developed here preserves in its structure the pronounced sparsity of power networks for which state the estimator analysis is to be carried out. A principal feature of the architecture is that the computing time overheads in solution are independent of the dimensions or structure of the equation system. It is here where the ultrahigh-speed of massively parallel computing in neural networks can offer major practical benefit.

  • This paper proposes IIKBAG(Intelligent Interlocking Knowledge Base Generator) which can build automatically the interlocking knowledge base utilized as the real-time interlocking strategy of the electronic interlocking system in order to enhance it's reliability and expansion. The IIKBAG consists of the inference engine and the knowledge base. The former has an auto-learning function which searches all the train routes for the given station model based on heuristic search technique while dynamically searching the model, and then generates automatically the interlocking patterns obtained from the interlocking relations of signal facilities on the routes. The latter is designed as the structure which the real-time expert system embedded on IS(Interlocking System) can use directly in order to enhances the reliability and accuracy. The IIKBAG is implemented in C computer language for the purpose of the build and interface of the station structure database. And, a typical station model is simulated to prove the validity of the proposed IIKBAG.

  • Three-dimensional blood flow in the sac of the KTAH(Korean total artificial heart) is simulated using fluid-structure interaction model. The aim of this study is to delineate the three-dimensional unsteady-blood flow in the sac of KTAH. Incompressible viscous flow is assumed for blood using the assumption of Newtonian fluid. The numerical method employed in this study is the finite element software called ADINA. Fluid-structure interaction model between blood and sac is utilized to represent the deformation of the sac by the rigid moving actuator. Three-dimensional geometry of cactus type KTAH is chosen for numerical model with prescribed pressure boundary condition on the sac surface. Blood flow is generated by the motion of moving actuator and strongly interacts with the solid material surrounding blood. High shear stress is observed mainly near the inlet and outlet of the sac.

  • We analyzed a periodic thick mushroom structure for use as an artificial magnetic conductor using mode-matching method. The fields in each region were represented by either Floquet modes or waveguide modes. By applying tangential electric and magnetic field continuity conditions and using matrix equations, unknown coefficients and dispersion diagram were calculated. The proposed model can account for the effects of oblique incidence. Simulation time using the method was much faster than the commercial tools. We found that the current method produces accurate results of reflection phase and dispersion diagram.

  • The purpose of this study is to optimize the artificial lumbar spine with the most lightweight three - dimensional porous structure while satisfying the safety factor of 3. We have introduced representative volumes to proceed with a local analysis and studied the maximum porosity distribution that meets allowable stress. The maximum porosity was studied at 12 points and the intermediate values were predicted based on this points. If the lumbar spine is designed according to this predicted results, the optimal design will be achieved.

  • A new mechanical heart valve prosthesis has been designed appling systematic design methodology. The function of the heart valve was defined, and search for design variation has been carried out according to the functional structure, Optimal model among the various variations was determined in view of the design specificationn. Proto type valve was fabricated and test has been carried out using a mock circulation system. It has been observed that the pressure profile, cardiac output and behavior characteristics are generally satisfactory.

  • The multiplication equipment of marine products with artificial upwelling structures could be useful in the fishing grounds near coastal areas. Artificial upwelling structures could move the inorganic nutrients from the bottom to the surface. Artificial upwelling structures have been used to improve the productivity of fishing grounds. Until now, research on artificial upwelling structures has been related to the distribution of the upwelling region, upwelling structures, and the marine environment. However, little work on the optimum design of the rubber-mound artificial upwelling structures has been done to increase the efficiency of drawing up the inorganic nutrients. This study investigated the optimum cross-section of rubber-mound artificial upwelling structures by means of hydraulic experiments. The hydraulic experiments include the falling test of rubber. Based on the results of the falling test, the relationship between the length of the rubber mound and water velocity, and the relationship between the shape of the rubber and the stratification parameter were established. In addition, the effect of the void ratio of various artificial structures on the stratification parameter was studied. From the experiment, it was found that upwelling could be enhanced when the ratio of structure height to water depth was 0.3 and stratification parameter was 3.0. The upwelling was not improved when the void ratio exceeded 0.43. The optimum size of rubber mounds was determined when the incident velocity was influenced by the mean horizontal length rather than size of block.
