  • This research helps you understand the road traffic noise levels by using a noise map. We have observed the change of the road traffic noise levels around $07:00{\sim}08:30\;and\;22:00{\sim}23:00$ using the noise map in the city. The road traffic noise level is very high both at noon and at night around a beltway and an interchange that is linked with a highway. It seems that the main route of so many vehicles, which are at neighboring cities such as N city and D and H districts and which avoid traffic jams in the city, is the beltway and interchange. The road traffic noise level of a nearby express bus terminal, railroad station, and airport is more than 75 dB at noon and 65 dB at night. The road traffic noise level of G city at night is observed to be more than 55 dB. The noise levels of a residence area and a university are higher than a road with high noise levels when the commuters drive to work. The end of the day exceeds 11 o'clock because of a culture level of development that arouses spare time, eating out, adults' drinking culture, nightlife of the youth, etc. Therefore, the road traffic noise level is high during late night hours, and it exceeds regulatory guidelines(55 dB(A)). It also damages the residence area that is located near the road.

  • This paper presents the results of an exploration of the ferromanganese crusts of Western Pacific Seamount registered by the Korean government. This area has been surveyed with a deep-sea camera and crust samples have been acquired by deep-sea dredging since 2013. On October 18-19, 2017, a united research team from KIOST and KRISO explored two blocks, OSM11 and OSM07, on the seamount using Hemire ROV. A precise survey was conducted on the ferromanganese crusts and sediments covering the slope/top of OSM11 and the middle flat area of OSM07. Rock samples were collected with precise positioning, and HD videos were recorded for 7 hours. This paper discusses the technical issues of this exploration in terms of (1) how to deal with an emergency situation during an electric power blackout, (2) the improvement of the thruster power by adding cooling plugs to the housings of the thruster amplifiers, (3) the relative motion of the depressor by changing the fixing method of the cable terminator, which affects the service life of the cable, (4) a sampling technique for the steep slope of the seamount, (5) integrated navigation under a USBL blackout, and (6) a 3-dimensional image mosaic for visualizing the distribution state of the crusts.

  • Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most powerful materials for purifying organic pollutants using photocatalytic activity. In this study, we have introduced a novel method to design highly photoreactive flexible 3 dimensional (3D) ZnO nanocomposite [F-ZnO-m (m: reaction time, min)] by electrospinning and simple-step ZnO growth processing (one-step ZnO seed coating/growth processing). Significantly, the F-ZnO-m could be a new platform (or candidate) as a photocatalytic technology for both morphology control and large-area production. The highest photocatalytic degradation rate ([k]) was observed for F-ZnO-m at 2.552 h-1, which was 8.1 times higher than that of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs; [k] = 0.316 h-1). The enhanced photocatalytic activity of F-ZnO-m may be attributed to factors such as large surface area. The F-ZnO-m is highly recyclable and retained 98.6% of the initial decolorization rate after fifteen cycles. Interestingly, the F-ZnO-m samples show very strong antibacterial properties against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) after exposure to UV-light for 30 min. The antibacterial properties of F-ZnO-m samples are more effective than those of ZnO NPs. More than 96.6% of the E. coli is sterilized after ten cycles. These results indicate that F-ZnO-m samples might have utility in several promising applications such as highly efficient water/air treatment and inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms.

  • This study standardized the catch per unit effort (CPUE) of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) caught by the Korean longline fishery in the Pacific Ocean. The study used a general linear model (GLM) to standardize the CPUE using catch and effort data aggregated by year, month, and $5{\times}5$ degrees of latitude and longitude in the tropical Pacific Ocean from 1982 to 2008 (except for 1988 and 1989). Explanatory variables in the GLM analysis included year, month, subtropical area, and number of hooks between floats (HBF). The study area and HBF were subdivided into three subtropical areas and six classes, respectively. During the study period, the standardized CPUE was significantly related to the nominal CPUE. The standardized CPUE declined sharply, as compared to the nominal CPUE, after the mid 1990s. In particular, the decline in the standardized CPUE in all subtropical areas in the 2000s was clearer than that of the nominal CPUE.

  • This study is to evaluate the per capita accessibility to child care facilities using road map in rural village unit considering the supply and demand of child care facilities in municipal (Si-Gun) units. Using these estimated accessibility, the most accessible regions to child care facilities was identifies using Moran's index. Assuming establish a new child care facility in the most accessible region, the sensitivity of child care environment was analyzed. The number of regions are 71 si-gun-gu where supply of child care facilities is insufficient. The average accessibility per capita is 1.09 km to child care facilities and the average accessibility in Myeon unit is approximately 2.2 times higher than accessibility in Eup unit (Eup unit 0.54 km, Myeon unit 1.21 km). Approach tendency from village to child care facilities has positive relationship as 0.451 global Moran's index. The high-high (H-H) accessibility regions are wide as Gangwon-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeollanam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do. Assumed to be established the new child care facilities in Yangyang-gun (Ganwon-do), accessibility changes of child care environment are up to 2.7 times greater and the recipient population is 77% of Yangyang-gun.

  • The chemical properties and composition (pH, CaO, Fe, $HCO{_3}^-$, and $SO{_4}^{2-}$) of groundwater (GW) and surface water (SW) from the northern (non-carbonate bedrock) and southern (carbonate bedrock) sections of the Daedong River, Pyeongyang were analyzed and compared period of the 1930s. In the southern section, the GW and SW has a higher pH and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ concentration, but lower $HCO{_3}^-$ and Fe levels than in the north. This finding reflects a reaction that formed acid by replacing metal ions in inorganic salts by hydrogen, which resulted from the oxidation of organic material in a clay layer.

  • Each year, the south coast of Korea is badly damaged from storm surge. The damages are greatly dependent upon the local peculiarities of the region where the storm surge occurs. So, in order to prevent/reduce recurrence of the disaster, it is very important to investigate the fluctuation characteristics of the storm surge height, related to the local peculiarities at each coastal area where occurrence of the disaster is expected. In this paper, using the numerical model, the storm surge was simulated to examine its fluctuation characteristics at the Gyeongnam coast (southeast coast of Korea). Typhoons of Sarah (5914), Thelma (8705) and Maemi (0314), which caused terrible damage to the coastal area in the southeast coast of Korea in the past, were used forstorm surge simulations. Moreover, the storm surge due to virtual typhoons, which were combined the characteristics of each proposed typhoons (Maemi, Sarah, Thelma)with the travel route of other typhoon, was predicted. As expected, the results revealed that the storm surge heights are enhanced at the coastal regions with the concavity like a long-shaped bay. Also, the storm surge heights, due to each typhoon, were compared and discussed at major points along the Gyeongnam coast, related to the local peculiarities, as well as the characteristics and the travel route of typhoon.

  • The NDVI (Normalized difference vegetation index) is used as indicators of crop growth situation in remote sensing. To measure or validate the NDVI, reliable NDVI sensors have been needed. We tested new fixed-field NDVI sensor, "SRS (Spectral Reflectance Sensor)" developed by Decagon Devices, during Kimchi cabbage growing season at the cultivation area located in Gochang, Gangneung and Taebaek in Korea from 2014 to 2015. The diurnal variation of NDVI measured by SRS (SRS NDVI) showed a slight ${\cap}$-profile shape and was affected by water on the sensor surface. This means that SRS NDVI around noontime is resonable, except rainy day. Comparisons were made between the SRS NDVI and NDVI of used widely mobile sensor (Cropcircle NDVI). The comparisons indicate that SRS NDVI are close to Cropcircle NDVI (R=0.99). SRS NDVI time series displayed change of the plant height and leaf width of Kimchi cabbage. An obvious exponential relationship is found between SRS NDVI and the plant height ($R^2{\geq}0.92$) and leaf width ($R^2{\geq}0.92$) of Kimchi cabbage. Thus, SRS NDVI will be used as indicator of crop growth situation and a very powerful tool for evaluation of remote sensing NDVI estimates and associated corrections.

  • This study investigated the impact of baseflow on fish community in the Ungcheon stream (16.5 km long) located downstream of the Boryeong Dam, Korea. Based on field monitoring, there were five dominant fish species in the Ungcheon Stream accounting for 75% of the total fish community: Zacco platypus, Zacco koreanus, Tridentiger brevispinis, Rhinogobius brunneus, and Pungtungia herzi. These five fish species were selected as target species. HydroGeoSphere (HGS) and River2D models were used for hydrologic and hydraulic simulations, respectively. A habitat suitability index model was used to simulate fish habitat. To assess the impact of baseflow, each representative discharge was examined with or without baseflow. The HGS model was used to calculate baseflow within the study reach. This baseflow was observed to increase gradually with longitudinal distance. Validation of the hydraulic model dem onstrated that computed water surface elevated when baseflow was included, which was in good agreement with measured data, as opposed to the result when baseflow was excluded. Composite suitability index distributions and weighted usable area in the study reach were presented for target species. Simulations indicated that the baseflow significantly increased habitat suitability for the entire fish community. These results demonstrate that there should be a substantial focus on the baseflow for physical habitat simulation.
