  • Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) process is the most efficient process to manufacture the linepipe. To develop the high performance ERW linepipe using the high strength and the high alloy steels, the modulation of input power waveform such as sinusoidal waveform is introduced because the conventional ERW technology is not sufficient enough to produce the high quality linepipe due to its strength and high alloy contents (high Ceq). In this article, the material used for the experiment was API X60 with 8.2mm thickness, and ERW simulator at POSCO was used to develop a waveform control system for the power modulation. The frequency of power modulation was varied from 50Hz to 150Hz with the fixed amplitude of ${\pm}2%$ power. The non-modulated power input and the modulated power input cases are conducted to demonstrate the variation of the narrow gap length and the arcing frequency due to power modulation. From results of the non-modulated power input case, the excessive power causes the longer narrow gap length and the low arcing frequency due to the large heat input and the strong electro magnetic force that increase the weld defect. On the contrary, the small narrow gap length and the high arcing frequency reduce the weld defect. After modulating the power input with 50Hz and 100Hz at the fixed power, the arcing frequency increases, but the narrow gap length does not change much. The high arcing frequency prevents the formation of weld defect because the sweeping frequently cleans the oxides on the narrow gap edges. As a result, the manufacturing window can be expanded by the power modulation that provides the stable ERW process for the quality improvement of the linepipe made from the high strength/high alloy steels.

  • This paper dealt with the detection algorithm of series arcing, which is a cause of electric fires in low-voltage wiring systems. To find the distinguished electrical features of series arc, we simulated series arcing by the arc generator specified in UL1699. An electric heater, an inverter-controlled vacuum cleaner, and a phase-controlled incandescent lamp were used as loads to generate series arcing. A high-pass filter (HPF) with the low cut-off frequency of 3 kHz at -3 dB was fabricated and applied to separate the series arc signal from the AC voltage source. The experiment showed that the high frequency signal generates randomly during series arcing, and the phase-controlled incandescent lamp produces high frequency pulses even in normal state. In this case, the magnitude, the width, and the randomness of high frequency signal should be analyzed to estimate series arcing precisely.

  • This paper describes the detection algorithm which can distinguish series arcing signal from voltage harmonics or noises produced by the operation of non-linear loads. A high pass filter with the cutoff frequency of 3 kHz is designed and it can attenuate power frequency signal to 80 dB. Series arcing phenomena is simulated to an incandescent lamp controlled by a dimmer. From the experimental results, it is confirmed that the amplitude of the filter output voltage varies at random during series arcing but the signal generated by non-linear loads appears on a regular basis. We proposed a series arcing detection algorithm using the chaotic nature of voltage signal.

  • Many electrical fires are occurred by leakage currents and sparks generated by a short circuit. Earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) should be tripped at the moment of the faults mentioned above. In this paper, we described the tripping characteristics of ELCBs against parallel arcing faults. A diesel engine generator with the capacity of 375 kVA source was adopted to provide enough large current when a parallel arcing occurred. The experimental results showed that most ELCBs we experimented were not tripped against short-duration pulse currents produced by parallel arcing because the ELCBs are designed to be tripped by a large current with long duration similar to power frequency.

  • This paper described a method of determining whether arcing is present in a low-voltage wiring system. We simulated the series arcing that generated in electrical loads and fabricated a arc detection module which can discriminate between normal and arcing state. The module consists of a high-pass filter with a low cut-off frequency of 3 kHz to attenuate power frequency voltage and an active band-pass filter with a frequency of 4 kHz ${\sim}$ 8 kHz to detect series arc signals only. We tested an Incandescent lamp that was controlled by a dimmer and analysed. The module consists of a high-pass filter with a low cut-off frequency of 3 kHz to attenuate power frequency voltage by 80 dB and an active band-pass filter with a frequency of 4 kHz to detect series arc signals only. From the experimental results, we could detect series arc signals without an influence of non-linear loads.

  • The effect of Si content in welding wires on th arc stability was investigate, in the region of short circuit transfer and spray transfer. In the region of short circuit transfer, with increasing Si content, average arcing time and average short circuit time were increased. Therefore, droplet transfer frequency was decreased, due to the increase of arcing time and peak current at the moment of arc-reiginition was increased, due to the increase of short circuit time. In the region of spray transfer, the fluctuations of arc current and arc voltage was the most stable in wire with Si content of about 00.60 wt.%.

  • The effects of Ti addition in welding wire on the spatter generation and the droplet transfer phenomena were investigated. With increasing Ti content the spattering rate was decreased but the ratio of large size spatter (D $\geq$ 1. 0mm) was increased in both short circuit and globular transfer mode of $CO_2$welding. In short circuit transfer region, the arcing time was increased and the droplet transfer frequency was decreased with increasing Ti content In globular transfer region, the transition current and voltage to globular transfer was lowered and the welding condition region for stable globular transfer was widened with increasing Ti content.

  • Annually, electrical fires caused by arcing phenomena in power system rapidly increase as the use of more electric appliances, but there is no established method for the prevention of the accidents. With this background, this paper dealt with the experimental results on a series arc detection technique and a device for air conditioners. Series arcing phenomena that is generated in incomplete connection of air conditioners was simulated, and the frequency spectrum was analyzed. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the arc pulse showed that the dominant frequency components exist in ranges of 190 kHz~250 kHz and 900 kHz~1.6 MHz. An arc detection circuit with low cut off frequency of 170 kHz to attenuate 60 Hz by 170 dB and a signal discriminator were designed. Also, an algorithm which separate series arc signal from unwanted noises produced by switching operation, inverter, and surge was proposed. Application experiment was carried out on several types of air-conditioners by using the arc generator specified in UL1699, and the results showed the over 99 % accuracy.

  • The analysis of distribution line faults is essential to the proper protections of the power system. A high impedance fault test, which was carried in Korean electric power systems, it was found that a arcing phenomenon occurred during the high level portion of conductor voltage in each cycle. In this paper, we propose a new method for detection of high impedance faults, which uses the arcing fault current difference during high voltage and low voltage portion of conductor voltage waveform. To extract this difference, we diveded one cycle fault current into equal spanned four data windows according to the magnitude of voltage waveform and applied fast fourier transform(FFT) to each data window. The frequency spectrum of current wavefrom in each portion are used as the inputs of neural network and is trained to detect high impedance faults. The proposed method shows improved accuracy when applied to staged fault data and fault-like load.
